Montgomery is still my favorite, but Fran would be pretty sweet.

Montgomery, then Rahe. Really we want no slow ball coaches so that eliminates many of these people. We need up tempo to get the fans excited like LE played.

Nick Nurse is the bomb. He's liked by players, loved by fans and a proven winner. He won at Grandview (as the youngest head coach in the nation), won championships overseas and the winningest coach in the NBA D-League. ISU would be crazy not to hire him as the newest ISU head coach. And he's an Iowa boy who still holds the record as the best 3-point shooter. I'm a huge college basketball fan and vote Nick Nurse for head coach!

On one level this is probably a very unfair statement to make; but wouldn't hiring Montgomery be sort like hiring Chizik. Top assistant coach that at the first offer from a better program would likely be gone.

I have a similar feeling about hiring an assistant from an MSU or Duke type program. Though my concern isn't them getting hired away before they succeed (lightening isn't going to strike thrice!), but it would be that they don't know how to win here. I don't think the Chiz really realized how to win at a program like ISU. You need to find the diamond in the rough players, you need to develop talent, you need to coach up the team, and you need to hire the right staff to pull it together.

At a place like MSU or Duke bball (like UT or Auburn football), you just sign a class full of 5 star recruits and throw them on the field with the best coaching staff money can buy and it takes care of itself. These guys we are looking at here have no experience building a program. I agree, they have been around some great basketball minds and they know how to win, but do they know how to win here? I'm not so sure.

I would love to see Collins here. He makes alot of sense and with all the success of these young coaches around the country I would love to see this approach in Ames. His down side would be that Coach Otz would probably bolt. Otherwise, recruiting, playing, NBA ties, big time program experience he has it all. Not to mention the most recent National Title.

I don't get all the people eliminating winning coaches because they think they don't like the style of play.

winning matters. how many points you score while winning doesn't.

The only name this list is missing is Lon Kruger.

I would subtract Jeter (has done nothing since he was originally considered), and Rahe, Ray, and Wesley, as those three candidates would not have enough of a high-conference exposure to excite the ISU fanbase. Half of what has to be considered is will the next coach put butts in seats - these four I believe would not.

This is the truth. No one would complain about Brad Stevens, even if his style is boring. I will say though, if a coach is just mediocre, then it is a far better recruiting pitch if they play up tempo.

I Think that Applies to Collins at Duke

I think your point is valid about Collins from Duke. Duke recruits elite players and their system is based on guys making plays. I can't recall a Coach K assistant who has gone on and succeeded somewhere else (e.g. Amaker, Snyder, Dawkins).

I wouldn't make that same statement about MSU. While MSU does recruit some elite recruits, Izzo brings in some blue collar type of kids. If you look around Izzo has turned out a couple good assistants in Crean & Gregory. IMO the Izzo recipe for success is what ISU needs: defense, rebounding, fast break when possible but if its not there- an effective half court offense.

I love winning, but I don't want to fall asleep watching it. Give me an up tempo style any day. If I wanted to watch a slow paced game, defensive, low scoring game...I'd watch hockey. I want to have fun at games and that involves both winning AND a high powered offense.

That is a very valid point and should certainly be considered. We're just not going to get the blue chippers here at ISU that everyone thinks we're entitled to (I still think those that think that Harrison Barnes would have stayed in Ames once Duke and UNC entered the picture had the right coach been coaching ISU are insane).

Why isn't Rick Majerus name being brought up? He's done good things since getting back into coaching at St. Louis. Turned the corner with all freshman and sophomores and is winning there. And was definitely a winner at Utah. Granted he's not the average younger, up-and-comer, but has the head coaching experience and would definitely be a "character" that could bring some excitement back to Hilton Magic.

First of all, GM leaving for Creighton is a win-win situation. It helps his career (he is a good guy) and it helps us to back on track without breaking the bank. Secondly, LE had a good run here during his tenure; but we have a new paradigm now (according to JP) and Larry's abusive tactics would drive away 3/4 of our spoiled, prima-donna, me-first players. We need someone with more tactfulness. I think our spirits had reached a along time low, now at least there is something to look forward to. I don't even know who we should get, but I know we will be better off. Just one thing though - NO LONG TERM CONTRACTS PLEASE.

this is disappointing, and an example of how some people will ALWAYS complain about something.

I guarantee there will be people on this site who don't like the hire, regardless of who it is.

This. I would gladly accept a Wisconsin-style team if it meant we had their annual success...
