I think we need forum reform where the mods can change the title of a thread before it turns stupid like this. Just like anything on Facebook, people react to the title and what's posted as fact, and then it turns into a ****-show and makes everyone look bad. Of course nobody has been embarrassed to wear Iowa State gear, so to imply this is what they were saying is just dumb.

Title:
Have you ever been embarrassed to wear Cyclone Gear?

This implies that something was said at one point that you as a fan should have been embarrassed to wear Cyclone gear.

First Line:
both Eisworth and Campbell said not that long ago before they were here that people were embarrassed to wear a cyclone shirt or hat.

What was actually said:
“We earned our way here,” Eisworth said. “That’s what I told those guys in there, ‘I’m proud of y’all,’ and be proud to wear the Iowa State logo, because, for a while, some people weren’t that proud to wear the logo.”

So everyone reacts to how the thread starter reacts to something they decided to take out of context.
Assumption made.
1. Eisworth and Campbell both said this. Well Campbell said nothing, and that wasn't even the context.
2. YOU should be, implying fans wearing a shirt to the airport. No he was referring to just the players and the 'logo' they represent.
3. Embarrassed to wear cyclone shirts and hats. No, he was talking about the player representing the team and the brand, aka the logo. Proud to play for ISU.

The fact that the narrative runs for pages and pages is just dumb.

How to make a successful thread in CF.

1. Find something mundane that was said, especially when it's a question asked that someone wasn't prepared to answer, and definitely not worried about framing it.
2. Completely ignore any context.
3. Find a way to be outraged about it.
4. Post it as facts, dumb it down (aka fans and shirts and hats) and talk about how it made you feel bad.

Also see a majority of threads (cave-like click-baity) that get any traction. Any comment Matt makes that's not coach speak, any bball thread where someone didn't get playing time for a single game, something small wrong with Purdy or a play call and what you think should have been done.

If the Title was simply "Eisworth is proud to wear the Iowa State logo, for a while, some weren’t" it wouldn't turn into hey I wore my Iowa state shirt everyday in the 90s, how elitist of Campbell! I'm an alum, I'm proud of my school!

EDIT: And nothing against the thread starter, or this thread in particular, it just seems that this is the formula for any thread now a days. Just have to polarize everything and live as pessimistically as possible.

EDIT 2: Looks like I missed Campbell's portion of it, so I apologize as that gives some of the things a little context. Still, let's not equate things like players representing a specific program to a fan/alum wearing gear out in public.

I have never been embarrassed to wear Iowa State gear. However, the football team’s play was often embarrassing after Earl Bruce left and before Dan McCarney arrived.

I don’t disagree with your premise here but you should also include the quote from Campbell which was much closer to what the thread is about than Eisworth.

Campbell’s quote:
“There were a lot of people when I got there that were embarrassed to wear an Iowa State shirt and an Iowa State hat around,” Campbell said. “Now, it’s a sense of pride.”

Based on that quote, I think it’s completely reasonable to ask if you were one of those people that were ever embarrassed.

only my "Iowa State is finer with Criner" shirt. Ditched that in a hurry.
Yes that was a relic from the DARK YEARS....I knew Jim Criner was going to be a BIG BUST ER LOUSY COACH....When he did his first press conference and he said that the Iowa game wasn't that important or words to that effect, and told Cyclone Nation ..."Get ready to buy Orange Bowl tickets because we are going to win a Big Eight Title"....
INSTEAD FINER WITH CRINER GOT US PUT ON NCAA PROBATION AND LOSS OF FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIPS!

My bad. I missed that part of it. Makes a little more sense now. Guess I should do full research first too, haha.

I guess my point is more I'd like to see less pessimism around the site in the new year.

Happy New Year Clones! Where that gear proudly.

It was clear CMC was expanding on what Greg said. Greg and Matt were specifically talking about the football program and those associated with it. He was not talking about the school as a whole, the basketball program, or any other program.

Below is what Greg said as noted by Fansworth and below that is what Matt said in response.

“We earned our way here,” Eisworth said. “That’s what I told those guys in there, ‘I’m proud of y’all,’ and be proud to wear the Iowa State logo, because, for a while, some people weren’t that proud to wear the logo.”

Matt added, “It’s inspired the future of our Football Program. There is a lot of you guys in here that understand what the past of Iowa State football stood for and Greg’s right, there were a lot of people when I got here that were embarrassed to wear an Iowa State shirt and Iowa State hat around and now it is a sense of pride. Now we are coming!”

Seems pretty clear they were talking about the players on the team and pride the players now have in the Iowa State Football Program.

I feel you were right in your post. I posted Matt’s full response above. Depending on how or how much of the story is told, it can say very different things.

Nope. In fact I enjoy it when Iowa fans heckle me. I always respond with the following. "I'm a fan and alumni did you graduate from Iowa?" They shut up really quick after that.
I find it comical that 90 percent of Hok fans didn’t even go to the school and have no affiliation with the school. They just happen to live in the same state where the university is located. Future, if Hayden Fry did happen to come along, they wouldn’t give a **** about the school. Now that’s embarrassing.

I think your blame is misplaced. The problem isn’t the titles.

I know some that actually say they hate the University of Iowa except for sports.

Could be the few players we put in NFL… I’ll never forget Ellis Hobbs called out his high school in the opening intros of a super bowl or big game. All the other guys said THE U, or university of Michigan etc. maybe that former players didn’t want to be associated ?

I referenced stuff like that earlier as well. Pretty important for the players on the team and former players to feel proud of what they are part of. Our fans are pretty die hard, but it has to be pretty difficult as a player to be more responsible/connected with the outcome and endure losing. Let's not ever take for granted winning games and competing in every game. And having players and a program representing our school that we can be proud of on and off the field.

I am vaguely remembering someone mentioning that there was an incident at his old high school that prompted him to say that - kind of a shout out to his old high school when they needed a pick me up.

You think Ellis didn't want to be associated with ISU because he...checks post...called out his high school? Ellis loves ISU. There are pictures of him with his son watching an ISU game on the couch; Ellis was wearing his old ISU helmet.

I do believe he was the one that called out "The Up and Coming Iowa State University." I think it was him, but could be wrong.

When Darren Davis broke the 15 year streak, I was at the game but didn't wear our colors. I expected another loss in Iowa City. I think Matt's comments related to our poor record, not being embarrassed. Let it go folks, relax &Happy New Year
