How many wins will it take?

I'll answer this question if, and when, we beat UNI. I don't want him coaching the second game if we can't beat UNI. That's where I stand. Cruel? Whatever, it's year 7, and you're damn right I expect to beat UNI year in and year out. I mean for cripes sakes, I think I want to beat UNI more than Iowa this year. Just because we're supposed to! How the hell did we get to this point?

I think this goes without saying. If PR loses to UNI he should be fired after the game. Again, to the OP, if we lose to UNI we're not in the right hands going forward, period.

The most depressing thing is to think of just how much we have to improve just to win 2 more games than last year. We were so uncompetitive that we could win 4 games this year and I'd feel we made huge strides, we'd still suck, but a little less.

I am so tired of making excuses for CPR and would like this year to be a deciding point either way - if we win 3 of the first 4, I'd say he's at least won the games we should. Beat Kansas and sneak 1 more and I'd be ecstatic. The terrible thing is that the schedule sets us up to be incredibly miserable after September.

Well we lost 3 games by a touchdown or less, so we might have different definitions of "depressing how much we have to improve to win two more games"

Way up there
We are so shorthanded at key positions that its unrealistic to think this is a team capable of winning more than one or two games more than last season. CPR and Co delivered IMO with the first step of that, bringing in more talent, now we just have to see them actually develop into guys who can contribute. Sadly, this program is one of the least talented in the country, not just p5...there are mid major teams with more talent than we have at key positions (QB, DL, OL, LB come to mind). Just seeing guys who play like they belong at this level would be a good start to indicate things are going in the right direction.

So it would take one of the 5 or 6 best seasons we've ever had?

That's not the ONLY thing, but it would maybe mean the excuses for the last two years (injuries, bad O.C., inexperience, etc.) were legit reasons for having one of the worst teams in D-1, and informally one of the least fundamentally sound defensive teams.

If they come out with something like 6-7 wins, a bowl game, look like a football team that practices basic football techniques, and losses aren't blamed on one bogus call/play, then I suppose there's an upward trend somewhere in there.

Works for me. Don't get me wrong, I'd love 8-9 wins. I was just curious if that was the only thing that made it possible.

You mean proven/developed players. We are far from least talented.

"heading in the right direction and the Iowa State football program is in good hands with Rhoads"

For me, I think 4 or 5 wins would make me believe that he could still be long-term successful. To right the ship after that kind of mess, even if it is still taking on some water, would be something positive.

Getting off to a winning start next year is CRITICAL. The back of the schedule is murderous. If they get off to a poor start (2-3 or worse), that will kill both fans' and players' esprit de corps - resulting in a downward spiral of attendance and performance. And that would be the end of CPR as the coach. We will know by early October.

I can already tell that expectations are way off from where they should be. Should be a fun year then.

Those expectations were created by 2 straight horrible years on the heels of (paging dirtyninety), the Liberty Bowl debacle.

Does anyone know Rhoads' record without Jake Knott playing?

I'm saying I'm getting the impression people are shooting too high...haha.

That's what I thought you meant, but I think the expectations people should have that you might be alluding to would be low because the program has been driven down...of course that is probably driving up the needed expectations.

I am guessing most people saying 5-7 wins don't think we'll get it, but are saying that's what they would need. Would be a good question to ask.

Let's hope that we come out and get 6 wins next year and everyone can get back on the Rhoads bandwagon. A small part of me is optimistic, but realistically, I don't see it.
