If we fire Messingham what type of OC could we get?

That's why I want Mumme. He created the offense with Leach as his assistant.

Mumme would be cool, but I don't think it will happen since Rhoads still seems set on being a run first offense. I'd personally like a younger guy who can coach QB's well and also game plan well. I won't complain though as long as the guy is proven at the FBS level.

My first choice would be go to SMU OC Hal Mumme the innovator of the Air Raid and give him what he wants. Would he leave SMU as OC to become our OC? If Sage could be a QB coach and learn under Mumme that would be fantastic.

Mike Mangino would be an option. Would he leave a head coaching job at Youngstown State?

Who else would be on your wish list and is it likely that we could pull them in?

I think I would also be fine with Chuck Long as OC, but I don't know how that would sit with some Cyclone Fans.

doubtful

How do you propose we get plays in.

I like those big placards with the pictures on them...they're pretty cool.

I don't know candidates and I'm a total novice, but I wonder if we'd be better off with someone who can 'own' the offense...CPR can fire the person, but other than that, the OC has control of the offense, including recruiting, scheme, playcalling. Under CPR, we've struggled on offense with an OC who now seems to be pretty successful at tOSU, and his replacement who seems to be falling farther behind every year. Read a little about this Mumme fella, I think he could own the offense. The Mangina...I don't know...he is a wizard, but I don't think his style would fit with CPR.

Maybe you make it an 'associate head coach/OC' position...speaking of which...what's with Bleil...he's still listed as assistant head coach and tight ends coach.

Hey, just my 2c.

I would like to see a guy that isn't afraid to have more than 3 formations, willing to put the QB under center and use a FB in short yardage situation. Motion plays that actual give the ball to the motion guy once in a while, or at least snap the ball in time to make a realist fake. There is nothing inherently wrong with the current offense, it is just something that needs to have more wrinkles, more motion, more things for the defense to think about. Currently the defenses know to player better than the offense.

Hey, just my 2c.

If Rhoad's style doesn't fit with a great coordinator, he's going to have to get over it. He has had two shots at this. I think herman would be significantly better but he wasn't when he was here and Mess is awful without even having to create his own offense. Rhoads needs to go find a guy to score points. It shouldn't matter how he does it or who scores. You allow him to hire his own supporting staff and give him free reign with no meddling. That's how the offense needs to run when the HC is defensive minded.

Regardless of scheme and typical formation, this must be part of the package. Allows potential for QB keeper or fullback pound ... And, as I've said before, used often enough in non-short yardage, so it isn't predictably one of those two options.

Lots of spread first teams go under center from time to time, and when they do they have more plays than just a QB sneak. I'm not asking for a lot, just one formation with the QB under center and about 3 different run plays and maybe a pass play, just enough to keep the defense honest.

Scoring points would be great but a guy that can help us sustain drives so our defense isn't shattered physically by week 7 would be nice would be nice at this point.

Anyone who could give our offense an identity. 5 years of CPR in Ames and what type of offense do we run? Spread? West Coast? Read Option? Pistol? Run-First? Pass-First? Nobody knows. Let's find somebody who can give us an identity. We are the laughing stock in all other circles of the Big 12, who mock ISU's offensive ineptitude. Even in our 6-7 seasons, nothing works consistently, because quite frankly, we don't DO anything consistently. Messingham is flipping through the playbook with his eyes shut, and picks the play he stops at when his eyes open.

The first time I ever saw the "look over to the sideline" from the LOS was when Kansas ran it under mark mangino.

They were awesome when they were doing it. Mangino knows offense.

Someone where everyone watching or in the stands doesn't know what's coming on 3rd and 1. And I thought Messingham said last year that he was going to have the quarterback under center for those type of plays? He said it bothered him when Herman called those plays.

Someone young who can relate to young guys and recruit the hell out of places we need to recruit. Someone who knows how to teach, encourage, build up and develop 2* and 3* talent. Someone who will take the heat, instead of deflect it on to others. Someone who can stand up to this strong willed head coach and fight for his ideas and his system and the autonomy to run it the way it's supposed to be run. Someone who believes in fundamentals and will practice a play, a formation, a series until it is done to perfection... and then do it again. Somebody who knows how to get into a rhythm and keep doing something until the damn defense proves they can stop it. I don't care if this guy is so good he is only here 2 or 3 years.

Innovative young coach who recruits well and runs a pass-first wishbone offense with constant motion to change formations.
