They have taken the bevels out of the "STATE" on helmets in recent years, but it is still in the "I." The beveling dates the logo. Simple two-color version would be better, especially on a helmet, and would be more timeless. All while keeping with our brand.I could be convinced that the "I-State" logo is the best ISU has had, but I wouldn't go so far as to say it is head-and-shoulders above all of the others that have been used since becoming Iowa State University in 1959. "I-State" has the benefit of being the longest used (15 years) and seen the most success.
But it is still a flawed logo, mainly due to being fairly generic, and being somewhat hard to read from a distance. The bevels and 4 colors make it more messy than it should be, and making the full switch to the 2-color and stencil versions would go a long way to making it more easily recognizable.
FIFYNow THAT looks like a college athletics logo set made with MS paint.
I could probably get to this; my wife is a Facebook member, I am not. Wish they would post it here, on CF, also. So far, I haven't seen it.The Athletic Dept is asking fans what their favorite logo is on Facebook. They could edit the post and just ask everybody what years they went to school and the responses wouldn't change much.
The Ames logo isn’t my favorite, but I’d definitely buy some merch if they threw it on it. Or any of those retro logos that we don’t push, for that matter.
It might be nice to have some of the more 'favorite' unofficial logos, etc. maybe get put on a t-shirt or some gear, then go up for sale. Proceeds to NIL!!Now see, I go back and forth on this one. I mainly don’t like it a ton because of the blue in it. Other than that it actually is a pretty cool logo. Tons better than the boring as block I with the state in it. I can’t find the picture but I know I saw Breece wearing a black hoodie with this outline a few years ago and thought holy hell that would be badass to wear!

Relax, Francis. I don't have a dog in this fight particularly and I'm not a graphic artist either. Also, I don't have to crate logos on my computer to poke fun at someone who did. Particularly since it was not intended to be mean.Quote: "Now THAT looks like a college athletics logo set made with MS paint."
Well there are a lot of better design software than MS Paint, which I am not sure even works anymore. I'm sure t probably does, but I haven't used it in a long time.
My point is, so what? He is offering some design concepts. With concepts, detail and presentation isn't always the most important thing. Especially if you are not an advanced photoshop wizard. Draf is pretty good, btw.
Let's see something you've put forward recently?
OK, fine. Just seemed patronizing and mean to me. Especially to be commenting on someones' work / interest like that, as if it could be better. I mean MS Paint vs. Adobe Photoshop. How is a person who did the work supposed to feel?Relax, Francis. I don't have a dog in this fight particularly and I'm not a graphic artist either. Give me Orrnados all day and I'd be fine.

If a mark has to be manipulated or only works with a certain color background, it‘s an automatic fail. A logo should be simple and clean with no more than two colors, so it will pop on a uniform, shirt, hat or background. This is why the stencil and two color I-State logos look so much better than the 4 color multi shade looks. I still don’t understand why ISU doesn’t use the stencil gold logo on their cardinal helmet or two color logo on the white helmet.

Left = beveled "I" Right = no bevels at all.

I'll chime in. I like the 3-D beveled logo. We should keep it. It has it's place. I also agree with what's being said here, and what others have said in the past. There are times when the simpler 2-D logo and effect just looks better and is more appropriate.I think the 3-D/bevel adds a little dynamic to I-State as a standalone logo, but as others have said it complicates matters when it's on a background.
But I have some difficulty when it's used as single-tone/stencil -- the slanted sides on top & bottom of the "I" look more pronounced (and I don't really like that aspect of it ... it should be just common 90-degree angles) and the outline looks too "thick".
If I'm describing it effectively.
I also don't like how the bevel makes it hard to tell what our colors are. Because the darker cardinal and the highlight cardinal have roughly the same weight in the block I, it only serves to muddy our visual identity.I'll chime in. I like the 3-D beveled logo. I hope they do both and realize when to use them the most, change it up periodically.

Speaking of Orrnados, I call them Cynados now. Some on CF have noted that Johnny never liked to use them (preferred the Walking Cy, etc.), although they were used in football, etc., during Orr's tenure. So I started calling it the Cynado instead.
The "tilt" in the logos on the metallic cardinal helmet I created in the photo set are due to the tilt of the helmet itself. When worn, this helmet would be more level, thus leveling out the logo somewhat, too.Speaking of Orrnados, I call them Cynados now. Anyway, IMO the Cynado is one of the best logos we've ever had (along w/ WalkingCy and perhaps WhirlyBirdCy - w/ no blue). Cynado is unique and says 'Cyclones' right away.
But I think a slight modification would be good, from the original. Make it a little old, a little new. It was unintentional, but Draf's mockup, above, see bottom pic, is presented with more of a tilt in the logo. It looks better that way, IMO.
What I've done was inspired by Draf, and of course @amestoplease (see top pic above). I've 1) tilted the logo about 20 degrees, or so, (present it that way on and off the helmet). And, 2) I slighly 'narrowed' it. Not a great deal, subtle, but noticeable. To me, it looked better slightly narrowed, especially when reversed, or flipped to the L side of the helmet.

This is how I'd like to see a 'new' Cynado presented. Maybe then it could be approved and incorporated as an additional alternate logo?
Is the cardinal color on the “cynado”, as t-Noah calls them, the same as in the I-State in this image? They look slightly different to my eye, but it could just be the way it’s shown on screen or having white as the contrast instead of gold tricks my eyes. I like the cardinal color in the I-State here better.
I kinda dig these
