Is there a reason NOT to fire

We obviously have not learned our lessons from the Danny Mac Era. When you play NOT to lose, You LOSE. The offense should be in "attack" mode. Stretch the field. Take some shots. We didn't do that. On Defense we played NOT to lose as well. Sticking with the insane game plane of allowing UNI QB's a 10 yard cushion on their receivers and then missing the tackles after they made the catch. The Cyclones acted like this was an exhibition scrimmage and lost the game. It was the first game of the year. We have a very young team. They say the biggest improvement is made from the first game to the second game. We better hope so. And open up the playbook. We have nothing to lose at this point. Play aggressively and take some shots.

You must have been watching a different game than the one I was.

I totally understand giving him a trial year in last year, he didn't have a lot of time to put his system into place. Year 2 there's no excuse for not having the scheme in place and having an effective game plan.

Bleil should have been gone already. Messingham.... I dont know, but Im definitely leaning towards firing him.

Bleil ws blamed last year for the poor O-line play. Will it be any better this year with the new guy?

I can't necessarily blame the D for playing to not lose, that unit is definitely a weak spot. But the offense is not. I'm still mad we didn't go end zone after the fumble recovery in the third. We had a chance to take all the momentum in the game right there, and we ran SR up the middle.

It wasn't really a system change though. In fact we made the play book smaller if I remember correctly, and beyond that we just tweaked a few things. I saw last year as a trial run for Mess as a play caller, not for the system.

Messingham?

This thread is dedicated to the exploration of our OC's employment. I would like to see some reasoning regarding why CM should be retained. This isn't a meltdown thread so post one-liners elsewhere.

In my opinion CM should be removed immediately. If you think I'm wrong please explain why in detail. Again, I'd like to facilitate some thoughtful discourse here and am willing to listen to reasons for keeping Messingham...currently I see none.

Not immediately but I haven't had confidence in him since day 1. It's hard to tell how much is personnel and how much is coaching but I can't even watch us play anymore. I hate watching our offense...literally hate it.

How many shots did we take down field?

We took 1 shot downfield.... 1... the pass to bundrage... I wouldn't consider the touchdown by coleman a shot downfield, it was a cross route that looked like a missed assignment by the defense that he took all the way... we gotta find a way to stretch defenses more...

If J. Miller is demoted from starting LB but Mess is not demoted from OC, then Rhoads is a hypocrite. They were both lost, mentally behind the game, and unable to adjust. The difference is, one has been a "starter" for 13 games ... the other only two.

Do people realize that threads like these hurt Iowa State? Messingham surely is recruiting some players we want. Rhoads will decide who is best equipped to coach the team and I doubt he reads message boards for input. Offense has been an issue for several years...I am Messinghams biggest fan. I hope he gets the job done in the next game and the rest of the year.

No, this thread doesn't hurt ISU. CM does. No one said Rhoads would read CF and no members of the staff should. If your argument for keeping CM is that we would lose some recruits with him then that is the single weakest reason I've seen that he should not be fired.

Hope in one hand and **** in the other and see which one fills up first.

I'd be much more worried about recruits looking at Messingham's offensive offenses and deciding to take their talents elsewhere.

I've refrained from posting in the threads blaming recruiting because I truly believe that our personnel is good enough to win in the B12...certainly good enough to beat UNI. Since removing every member of the O staff is impractical I believe CM should be relieved of his duties.

I have a problem with something like 16 designed QB runs. Sam is a valuable resource and needs to be protected as such, not taking more hits than necessary. I'm honestly fine 5-6 runs but then let the glut of talented rbs handle the load. Also to those commenting on the defensive ineptitude, we just put up 20 points on an FCS, albeit a good FCS, team.

Did anyone think before Saturday that we would put up only 20 points? That is just not enough. Period, end of story. If we are going to lose it has to be for reasons other than putting only 20 points, against UNI or anyone else. Offensive production has to be improved. If it takes changing the p lay calling duties, so be it. If it means a new OC, so be it. I will leave that to those who know.

All I know is for the first time in a long time, I left the stadium and I wasn't excited for the next game. I hope I was the only one.

I guess I don't get the calling for a mans job when its not likely to happen after one game, but its hard to argue the offense has been inept for a while. Richardson looked good which gives me some optimism this group will improve.
