Dude, we have Fred Hoiberg....we will always have a shot with him.

That's not necessarily true. You still need things to align typically to make a Final Four run. Talent, depth, experience and leadership are the things you can control. Obviously there are other factors such that you can't control such as how your bracket shakes out, how talented other teams are, etc.

But some years you will have more things line up than others, and this year and next it seems like we have our best shot in the foreseeable future.

If we get a 1 seed, I'm putting $100 on the 16 seed.

If we win, it's money well spent. If we lose, which let's face it - any longtime Cyclone is going to be nervous as **** about this - it's a nice boost.

I won't be nervous.

With Niang, Morris, McKay all returning All Big-12 guys, and the rest of the returners and newbies, I fully expect Iowa State to be a potential top 5 pre-season with or without Diallo. Yo.

Here nor there
He basically noted that we were losing Hogue and BDJ, but returned Niang, "one of the top PGs in the nation" Morris, and athletic big McKay. Also bringing back shooters Long and Nader, while gaining transfers from Cooke and Burton.

Unfortunately, he also mentions this projection is largely dependent on if Hoiberg sticks around or takes an NBA gig.

I think Williams is a big oversight on his part.
We have two scholarships left to add impact guys.

The key is if the Big 12 coaches can pick us 4th in the preseason poll. We always finish 3-5 spots higher every year...so 4th can get it done (potential B12 champ and the 1 seed that can come with it). There's no way we get picked top 3 even though we arguably return the most talent and have a history of plugging in new star players...it would make way too much sense. They way it's done is you pick Weber in front of Hoiberg or you pick ISU 8th.

Hallice Cooke is a HUGE addition to this squad as well. Don't forget that if Thomas keeps gaining more confidence, that's going to help a ton as well. I've also heard Darien Williams is a great player and Deonte Burton looks like that physical forward who will clean up the boards and get the garbage points that we need. With or without Diallo we are loaded next year. It's definitely a great time to be a Cyclone fan! Before we get too caught up in the hype for next year, let's focus on getting back to the Sweet 16 again and hopefully making it further then that.

I don't expect much from Burton or Williams next year. Burton will have to make the mid-season adjustment like McKay did this year, but with a lot more competition for minutes at his position. Williams is coming off of a year-off and double shoulder surgery. Hopefully he can provide some post-defense and timely shooting, but I expect Edozie-type minutes for him. Remember, he's just going to be a sophomore. Getting those two guys enough experience to step into big-time roles the following season is all I expect.
