I don't think referees should be the ones requesting fans be kicked out of the game. That is why administrators are there. Referees, unless fearing bodily harm, should ignore the fans comments and focus on the game. Referees who respond to fan comments are just provoking more issues.

I totally agree with this. How can an official focus on his job if he's responding to the fans? And yes, while I don't officiate basketball, I am an official.

Basketball is probably the worst for fan interaction though ... right on top of the game and in all likelihood have a very good view of the action.

Fire him immediately. What a black eye for the university. :jimlad:

I've had it with this crap! I'm emailing JP.

I've been lax lately. No more.
This deserves the death penalty, and I demand it. Heads must roll.

Hahahahaha... Awesome...

Speaking of getting tossed. I almost got thrown out of the Basketball Hall of Fame for playing dirty in one of their center court games (ended being mostly just boos from angry parents).

For all you poor refs out there who are appalled: Quit chewing gum when you ref, don't wear glasses, lose some weight, no comb-overs, get in position, don't demand you're right when you know you're wrong, don't call fantom make-up calls, don't call traveling every time a guard makes a move (you're just guessing), don't call ticky tack touch fouls on the perimeter and then let them brawl inside, quit screwing up out-of-bound calls (easiest calls in the game), show some good judgment late in games (use common sense), practice throwing jump balls (it's a lost art)...I think that's all I can think of right now.

as a high school official this sickens me! you know i am tired of people complaining about officials i have been officiating high school sports for about 5 years and ive probably thrown 2-3 people out of an event. i have probably seen it happen about 5 times total. you have to be a complete moron to get thrown out of a high school basketball game. people tend to forget how stupid they look and sound. As For Jamie Pollard if this is true shame on him a guy with his role at a top 100 research instatuiton acting like an idiot. i mean why would you want to draw that much attention to yourself JP is probably the 3rd most reconizable individual at Iowa State.

its really sad that people have to act that way, officials at the high school level are not paid thousands of dollars to go out and ref a game it is about 80-100 dollars a night. these officials are guys who do not focus all there efforts into officiating most of them if not all have other jobs and families just like you and me. and if you dont like the way the officiating is handled, go out and register yourself anyone can do it, see how it feels to step into there shoes for a night. Reguarding the level of officiating in high school, yes it can be rough but think about it if we had a skill requirement there would be not enough officials to cover the entire state. as of right now there are not enough officials, its hard to cover all three levels (freshman, Jv, Varsity) of basketball boys and girls right now.

and maybe the calls were bad ive definatly made my share of bad calls but that is not the premise, people need to understand there is a level of decorum and it is not right to boo officials no matter what the call is.

it is different to boo college or profesional officials because well that is there primary job and those guys are the best at what they do day in and day out.

Take a minute and calm down. If you even read what actually happened, JP wasn't acting like an idiot. He made one comment that disagreed with a call, and the ref asked for him to be kicked out.

If officials don't like to be booed, then don't be terrible at it. I can't speak to the state of high school officiating but I think college officiating has gotten so much worse. In general, I don't know many people who get too upset about missed calls. People get upset when the calls are inconsistent. That is what gets a crowd upset.

For the most part, I thought our officials at the Oklahoma game did a pretty good job. They missed some calls - including some obvious ones. But I thought they were pretty consistent the entire game. They let the boys play. That is okay as long as it stays that way the entire game.

Don't you think when a ref sees JP in the crowd they get a little paranoid that whatever he says will be picked up by the rest of the crowd as being correct?

I sat with a group of lawyers at a high school state tournament game. You talk about a rough crowd.

I'm sure in colfax (and most likely mingo too) its a big skin to hang on your wall when you throw out ISU's A.D. Dont think for a minute that is not a part of this equation.

I'm sure the ref and his buddies had a good laugh about this over a few cans of bush light in the garage later that night.

"Mr. Pollard was at the BB game last night watching his son. He was very well behaved all night long. He did not ride the officials or make a spectacle of himself. Late in a close game there was a foul that had been called on a Gilbert player. The Gilbert fans did not agree with the call, but the situation was not out of control by any means.

During the timeout that was called during the free throws Mr. Pollard made a comment to the official who made the call. The official then came to me and asked me to have Mr. Pollard (he called him by name) leave the gym. I then asked Mr. Pollard if he would leave and he did. He apologized to me on the way out. There was no big scene and Mr. Pollard left without incident.

I was surprised when the official came to me and asked me to have him leave. I did not see anything that was overt or had been ongoing throughout the game from Mr. Pollard. This was the only comment Mr. Pollard made all night. The official said Mr. Pollard said to him, "that was a horrible call."

Jones also added that Pollard had called this morning to apologize again.
