Not too sure how Keeler's departure will end up. more squawk talk??????

Who ever wrote the CR Gazette as the best paper in the state needs to read one every once and a while. Biggest waste of natural resources in recorded history.

I did not like Keeler. He never had anything positive to say about ISU or Iowa. It seemed like he always slam a team when they were down. I'm glad he is gone, I may now have to go out and get a subscription to the Rag.

The Register will really lose value without a sports columnist. I didn't always agree with Keeler, but he was very fair to Hoiberg over the last year. And if Dan Johnson was also let go, the Register must really be planning on getting out of the sports business.

I still get the Register and I still read it. It'll be less readable without those 2.

They can hire college kids for less than half the cost of the other 2 and fill column inches with stories from those guys.

That paper hasn't been worth the value of butt wad for 10 yrs. Don't surprise me they had to lay off people. Print something worth a **** and try being objective about the articles and I'll give it a shot. Until then, I won't even take one when I fill my gas tank up at Kum n Go.

The job of every opinion columnist at the Register is to stir the pot. Editors and the "business side" want to see lots of page views and comments on the site, and the writers know it. I wouldn't go as far to say they have a quota, but the concept is there.

So Keeler and everyone else there writes things that try to get attention. Which is fine, it's opinion. But the overall coverage has gone way downhill, there's way too much reliance on reprinted USA Today and AP stories.

Like him, tolerate him, or hate him, at least Keeler gave some sort of local flavor to the sports page. Sure they'll get stringers or whoever is left to cover HS sports, plus Randy, but I'm not sure how many more reporters and columnists they can get rid of before they truly are just a total reprint of wire stories.

Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

I know many many conservatives who have turned away from print media BECAUSE of LIBERAL bias. They have retreated to other forms of social media.

Regarding the conservative view point and its popularity . . . why is FOX news doing so poorly and MSNBC et al are doing so well? :jimlad:

Further . . Conservative talk radio flourishes . . where or where is Air America?

I am not a Rush fan but HE is conservative (I can't stand his blabber mouth "profit center" and "talent on lone from God" crap).

The liberal left slant is dying and cannot sustain itself in a conservative majority America.

WAH, WAH, WAH, LIBERAL BIAS BLAH BLAH BLAH. Your one helluva broken record. Quit whining, you have plenty of places (which you outlined in your post above) where you can listen to your circle jerk where everyone thinks the same.

Me, I'll stick with the KC Star where I can read both liberal and conservatives columnists and take in both. I don't need to only read spoonfed crap designed for a bunch of lemmings who all think the same.

I especially laugh at how you think ratings = quality. Most programs with extremely high ratings appeal to the lowest common denominator, thats why crappy reality TV and boring, formulaic TV shows get the highest ratings and Top 40 radio is crap.

Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

Maybe they will just cover Big Ten stuff.
That is a good question, Wesley, or at least a question of degree.

As you know it especially applies to the World-Herald, which has done a pretty good job of covering the Big 12 over the years, and the Big 8 before that.

The World-Herald also owns the Ames Tribune, and it wouldn't be surprising if they just used it to cover Iowa State, and perhaps print conference articles or opinions from other newspapers on occasion. The World-Herald also owns the Council Bluffs Nonpareil. A few years ago, they went to where many or even most of the articles about local sports coverage are identical in each. Some things are still exclusive to the World-Herald, like SWI high school sports rankings, and not everything in the Nonpareil is also published in the World-Herald (though I think every big HS article is). In any case the World-Herald is going to have A LOT more coverage of the Big Ten.

And of course Gannett owns both the Register and the Iowa City Press Citizen.

Iowa State will obviously still be covered by the Register, but just as obvious, there will be more general changes. Similar to the World-Herald, it would be easy for them to print articles from the Press-Citizen. I otherwise wouldn't expect their Big Ten coverage to increase. In part it may be a concession that they cannot keep up with the World-Herald in this respect, of having people do sports columns in house. But this is one way they might do it.

I don't know how much they actually compete with the World-Herald for subscriptions any more, but perhaps that is what they plan. I doubt they actually sell many newspapers in western Iowa, but Big Ten coverage helps them in eastern Iowa.

For cost reasons, that said, it is hard to imagine much or anything more than what they currently do.

You can be sure though that the World-Herald has had to think about this.

Perhaps the Register could also reprint some Big 12 analysis from other newspapers, but I doubt they would do this much.

Yep . . you are in the minority . . especially after telling all us other ISU what we've never said or implied. I bet you really enjoyed his piece, a couple of years ago, about ISU's mediocre performance in the bowl game (Minnesota) ALL THE WAY FROM frickin Florida where the Hawks were destined for greatness. . yah, he really doesn't deserve criticism.

Maybe you journalism types might take a lesson or two from all this . . columnists who "dig" at the local sports programs don't do so well in the long run. Remember GIGGLES?

He did do better the last couple of years but by then . . he had burned so many bridges with ISU . . nobody really cared.

are you the same guy as the mad-something guy on CR who used to obsessively post about the register??? i think you can let it go...its been like 6 years....

From knowing the guy....he doesn't hate Iowa State. He isn't an ISU fanboy. Or an Iowa fanboy.

Re: Keeler Fired from DMR

You doubt it? FOX news has dismantled all the other cable news channels. Fox News isn't perfect by any means but it has the competition buried right now.

Just because their ratings are better than the other news channels (which REALLY isn't saying much) doesn't mean that their product is any better..

Besides, their viewership is still a tiny sliver of Americans when compared to things that people actually watch on TV. So there's no reason to think that newspapers would be afloat by simply filling their paper with opinions to satisfy the vocal far far right.

Definitely not going to pile on to a guy who just lost his job. I only ever read anything by him from links on here, and yeah, sometimes they irritated me, but if you're giving real opinions, you're going to **** people off at times.

Not sure how newspapers are going to make the transition in the internet age. Can they make enough money to support a full, real staff with only internet banners? The ideas of internet subscriptions seems to face a lot of headwinds.

I will miss reading Keeler's work and then ripping him in the comments section. He was a good guy though and knew it was all in jest. I hung out with him one night at a gentlemen's club in central Iowa and he sure knew how to party. Anyway, I am just glad that they did not get rid of Randy Peterson. I know he is covering the Hawks now but that guy is like a father to me. He taught me everything I know about slot machines. How to find the hot ones, how to scare off the old bats that keep trying to take your machine and how to tip the waitresses just right so they keep you well hydrated!
