Seriously, how long does it take to write a check? 30 seconds? 1 minute tops. What is the huge rush that you can't wait one more minute to get out of the store?

And then they ask for ID, so the person gets their purse (it's always a woman), fishes around, finds it, clerk does their voodoo, by this time my milk has curdled and I'm tired.

And if there is a line, anyone with half a brain can have it all filled out and noted in the register except the amount and the signature so that it takes less time than that. I don't write them at stores anymore but I used to be able to get through faster writing a check than credit card approval. I realize card approvals have generally sped up, but debit cards are still sometimes slow.

Were they sending for authorization via carrier pigeon?

There's a lot of things that only take an extra minute but still annoys you. Lets say before leaving the house you had to unlock and relock every door and window. Probably only takes a minute. no less stupid.

You are not the normal check writer though. Honestly, if people wrote them out while in line and just handed it to the cashier to print a total on, no one would care.

Come on, you are not so young that you don't remember dial up card authorization machines.

It is kind of funny to see clerks flail around in a panic when the system goes down and they have to break out the CC imprint machine. They have no clue how to use it. When they break it out, I'm pretty sure I'm getting my stuff for free.

Using checks is the equivalent of using travelers checks on vacation.

One note in defense of checks. I pay my rent and utility bill with checks. My utility company (Mid American) now offers on line payment capability. When I went out to set up an electronic payment, a $3 fee was to be added on. 43 cent stamp or $3 "conveinence charge"? Sorry Mid American, you'll still be getting a check from me.

I am still on the same checkbook register (I only record checks) from when I first opened my account in high school. Some of the checks I wrote in college are rather interesting.

I'd gladly pay the $2.50.

And for those of you saying that you make purchases at the check-out with checks - I hate you. You might be fine spending an extra minute or two of your day writing a check, but I don't enjoy you wasting my time.

Does your bank not offer on-line bill pay? If not, I'd be shopping for a new bank.

Heck, I got season tickets for me and 4 buddies this year, and 3 of them paid me by using their bank's bill pay feature.

I'm on MidAmerican for gas and electric and I don't get charged a fee for auto pay. You should look into that again, maybe their policies have changed.

Wow, you guys are all looking at this completely wrong. Look at the positive side of things. For example, the college girls who don't know how to put a spare tire on their cars. What better way to show her your manliness than to show her how to change the tire? As long as the guy who put the wheel on last time didn't use an air wrench with 300 ft*lbs of torque, you should be fine. Of course if he did use an air wrench, you look like an idiot and she laughs at you, but them's the chances you have to take.

I see no need for #2 for the vast majority of people. 95% of cars (I'm guessing) come with an automatic transmission. I've made it through 34 years of life w/o having to drive one, and I plan on continuing this trend for the rest of my life. Why would I learn to do something that is utterly and completely useless to me?

Don't knock it until you try it.
