Think how far our program has come...WE cooled on a top 150 recruit that ended up at Michigan State because we had options we thought we were better. WE had Malik Monk reach out to us. Insane compared to a few years ago

This. Love it. This is how it should be in Ames. With our fanbase, incredible facility in Hilton, and one of the best coach in MBB. Iowa State deserves to be a power player in Hoops.

Exactly, if I take anything out of this it's that Clark really, really wanted to come here. Which is a positive thing.

Yes. They thought they had Vaughn because Vaughn told them that the recruiting was over - it was a done deal - after the Michigan game. They had every reason to believe that Vaughn would be accepting a scholly at ISU.

Kansas State would soon have more company. In mid-February, an Indiana assistant came to Kansas to watch Mr. Clark play. At the end of the session, he offered a scholarship.“We’re serious,” the coach told Mr. Clark. “When can we get a visit scheduled?”
Michigan State was also interested. But because the university had not made an offer, Mr. Clark was not considering it as seriously.
“I’m focused on schools that really want me,” he said. To do otherwise, he said, wouldn’t be fair to the coaches who had put in the time.
Just as his recruitment was heating up, the line from Iowa State went cold. When Mr. Caruthers asked why, a Cyclones assistant told him that Mr. Hoiberg needed reassurance.
The assistant asked for Mr. Clark’s statistics on the season and wanted to see some recent game film. He insisted that he still wanted to get the deal done, his texts showed.
But Mr. Clark was not happy.
“How do you go from being my best friend to stop talking to me?” he said.
After consulting his handlers, he decided to cut ties. Just like that, his latest No. 1 choice was out.

So, why did they "stop talking"? You're telling me a recruit we invited on an official visit, and that Michigan State and Indiana both wanted, was not being talked to .... just because of "reassurance"? Vaughn fiasco had a play in the initial "stop talking" period, imo. Wouldn't it only take a few days to ask for reassurance or game film/statistics versus a cooling off period? We had to deter Clark, thus ask for reassurance, until the Vaughn thing straightened itself out which upset him. To say we'd have made room for both of them was not going to happen this time around. But, obviously there's plenty of theories out there and maybe none of us really know.

ISU thought they had Vaughn in November and nothing changed until right before he made his decision. I can't think of a single theory that would relate the two of them. Fred cooled for a reason, maybe they got more info on Clark nobody knows about, maybe they got a heads up on someone coming in the transfer market they would rather have, etc...nobody knows but I can't think of one possibility RV had anything to do with it. Coaches cool on recruits all the time and we never know why

They're only recruiting Dime, too, so we don't get him. Where on their roster do they need him?

At some point you have to wonder if KU and UK simply recruit every single kid ranked in the top 75. Everyone of them have visits set up with every kid it seems like. Btw not complainig. Its there right.

If Kansas offered Kansas months ago and the rumors (no link though) of him wanting to play in the Big 12 are true, Monk reaching out to ISU after he had a Kansas offer makes me like our chances a little better.
