Agreed. No words really. It's all terrible but I can't stop thinking about those poor old people. They really were sitting ducks.

More powerful storms are moving to the more populated/no basements southeast US. its only going to continue to get worse. sucks.
Do you work for an employer that does not provide a storm shelter? My employer does and it is a solid tunnnel.
As for southern houses, we put in a storm cellar on a house we had in Duncan, Oklahoma. Cost - $2000 - year 1981. Had a bed, snacks, games and radio. Spent a few evenings with kids until all clear. Caliche and or water table was not a construction issue. Being cheap is the usual culprit.

One my my SRE team members recently build a house near Nashville. (He was not in harms way on Friday night.)
Their contractor designed their pantry, centrally located off the kitchen, with 2 feet thick concrete walls and a steel lid. He hasn't had to use it as a shelter yet, but it was designed for that purpose.

I worry a little that Wednesday night could be interesting for central Iowa. If we hit the projected high of 71 degrees on Wednesday, it will be the only time that temps in Iowa have hit 70 degrees in December. The predicted high for Thursday is only 41, so you know there will be some serious storms Wednesday night when that cold front moves in.

I've done some work with a factory in that town and the damage their is terrible.
Time will tell but temp and fronts are not the real triggers of storms like these.
As with my last post, there have been thunderstorms in Iowa before in December and if it hits 70 this week that being only time that has ever happened in December in Iowa is not true. On Dec. 8th, 1946 many stations hit that mark. Des Moines was 69. On December 13th, 1921 most of the state was in the mid to upper 60's. This type of mild weather although not the norm has happened before.
Then the KCCI weatherman I watched this morning must have been wrong, although he may have been referring to Des Moines specifically. Anyway, to say 70 degrees in Iowa in December is not the norm is an understatement. I'm afraid it's just another symptom of climate change.

I'm not a climate change denier but the other night they showed a graphic on KCCI I think and probably 5 out of the 6 warmest days in December in Iowa occurred from the 1920s-1950s.
its not about one off instances. It’s overall trends.
Never, ever quote anything from KCCI as gospel because it's quite obvious they don't do research in these things called books before they open their mouths. And don't worry about it being a symptom. The average is what........35? Well if it hits 70, next year it might be 0 and 70 into 2 is......................shazaaam............35. D*** averages.
