Yes, wouldn't that be great If a few volunteer students would assist usAre the “tailgating Cyclones” some sort of group? Otherwise, I’m confused by the question because the tailgate is every direction around the stadium.
If you are parking far away try to get on a trolley. It’s hard to predict when they will be back so if you see one early, hop on it. My mom struggles to walk long distances so I am always looking for one for her. If there was one improvement to the tailgate experience that I could recommend, it would be helping people to the stadium that need it.
Missed them today as they closed at 4pm. Emailed, so hoping to catch them tomorrow. Thanks.I would think since its a federal law, that a handicapped pass from one state would have to be accepted in another state. Call the ticket office to make sure, but i would guess you will not have any problems parking using the pass. They start parking in S1, then slide people over to a few spots in S2, once those are used up they park people in S5. Not sure where they park them after that lot gets full.
Thanks so much!Do you have a handicap tag or hanger? In lots S1/S2 that have some ADA parking, not sure about how to obtain those. The grass lot public parking isn't too far (less than 1/2 mile) but it is currently sold out. Otherwise, it's going to be a bit of a walk as you may have to park south of HWY 30 or on campus.
Tailgating is in literally every lot in around the stadium, so take your pick!
Thanks Carvers! I was able to snag a room at the Best Western. Yeah, I tried Air Bnb first. We have stayed at Best Western in Ames with our lab mix. I think they allow dogs up to 80 pounds but they aren’t going to weigh your golden.
We always try to get an Air BnB with the dog first though.
My brothers were at ISU in your era. One lived in Helser and you could easily see Clyde Williams from his room.
Make sure to spend some time driving around central campus.
Thanks, Good to know. Hope it's open in a couple weeks.69 is closed for a bit just north of Ankeny. At least it was after the Baylor game
We took our lab mix to the solar eclipse and knowing they took big dogs was handy. Hope they give you first floor. Thanks Carvers! I was able to snag a room at the Best Western. Yeah, I tried Air Bnb first.
My two bouts with a wheelchair both started AFTER football season. I can give you the tips for Hilton. I assume JTS is similar.@ImJustKCClone Am I remembering correctly and you have some experience with handicapped parking at JTS? Was thinking you or Lew needed it at some point.
Ahhh, I certainly didn't remember the kicker's name but can recall the final minutes of that game like yesterday. Truly from the thrill of victory to the agony of...a tie. I'm wondering if Welch Ave Station, nee The Library, was The Cave Inn while I was there. Great roast beef au jus sandwiches. We took our lab mix to the solar eclipse and knowing they took big dogs was handy. Hope they give you first floor.
Our family covered most of the dorms between my five siblings and I and our progeny.
One of my brothers was in Towers when Tom Goedjen had his only extra point miss against Nebraska. Their training table was in Knapp-Storms dining hall and the poor guy took a lot of crap.
I started school in 1979 so never went to Clyde Williams as a student. Places that existed when I was there that live on in some capacity include Grubsteak, which is now Cafe Baudelaire; Hickory Park, now much larger on south Duff; Wallaby’s, no longer in west Ames but north of campus on Stange; and the bar that was The Library on Welch under a pizza place is still there under a pizza place but now Welch Ave Station.
I think this game is Homecoming? So glad you got a place for your pup. Safe travels!

Thanks for all the helpful info JustKC.My two bouts with a wheelchair both started AFTER football season. I can give you the tips for Hilton. I assume JTS is similar.
It might be too late now, but my suggestion would be to call your doc and have them fill out a temporary handicap form. You use that to get a hang tag at the DMV. I took care of it before my surgeries. Below is the basic info.
To get a handicap hang tag in Iowa, you need to complete an "Application for Persons with Disabilities Parking Permit" form, which requires a signed medical statement from a qualified healthcare provider like a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, chiropractor, occupational therapist, or physical therapist, verifying your disability; you can submit this application at any Iowa Driver's License Service Center.
Key points about getting a handicap hang tag in Iowa:
- Application form:
You need to fill out the "Application for Persons with Disabilities Parking Permit for Iowa Residents" form.
- Medical statement:
A medical professional must complete a statement on their letterhead detailing the nature of your disability.
- Where to submit:
You can submit the application and medical statement at any Iowa Driver's License Service Center.
- Eligible medical professionals:
Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, chiropractors, occupational therapists, and physical therapists.
- Temporary permits:
If your disability is temporary, the medical statement should specify the duration for which the permit should be issued.
I hope your out of state handicap tag will be acceptable and you get a response from the athletic office. I parked there often with my elderly father. It is a very short walk to the stadium and then they have carts to take those in need up the ramps. The entrance into the handicap lot is not obvious unless you have been there before. I have marked the entrance with an x below. I would recommend arriving early (2-3 hrs) and bring things for tailgating. People in the handicap lot are very friendly. If you can’t find a hotel in Ames, try the comfort inn in Story City. It isn’t far and it is away from Des Moines and most of the traffic.

The game time has not been announced yet. The conference and TV will determine the time before it is announced. As an example, the UCF game time was announced Oct 7 and the game is Oct 19th to give you an idea for when it might be announced. Thanks Bozclone. The map is super helpful! And your advice is just what I needed to know. Any chance you know the 11/2 gametime start?
Pizza pit and the Lbrary still exist, though the library is called Welch Ave Station if I remember right. Cys roost still exists I believe but haven't been in it in many yrs.Definitely. Part of the plan to visit all the old sites and hangouts (if they still exist!)
Thanks NWICY. Really looking forward to it.Pizza pit and the Lbrary still exist, though the library is called Welch Ave Station if I remember right. Cys roost still exists I believe but haven't been in it in many yrs.
The real library on campus has a giant addition that you won't recognize.
I feel the University has done a great job maintaing central campus, but my goodness they've tucked buildings everywhere else. You'll be amazed at the growth along Lincoln way, compared to your time there.
This viewpoint from a 80s grad who goes back annually for mbb/wbb and usually a fb game a yr.
Have a great trip and enjoy your time back in Ames.
Great information. Shaking the mothballs out of my ISU duds today! Kudos to your Dad, a loyal son.My dad is graduated from ISU in 1957 and is handicapped. We always park in Lots S1-S5. The cost is $20 or $25 cash. Although it says Iowa handicap sticker only, I am not sure they check that close for the issuing state. If your are handicapped, they are required to find a place for you. Still, I would try to get there at least one hour before the game if not sooner.
You enter the lots from Beach Street, just southwest of the stadium. They will instruct you where to go. They fill up lot S1 first, then S2, S3, etc. There will be tons of tailgating in those lots so you will get to experience that as well. Make sure to where your ISU reto gear and have fun!
