WVU has no current rivalries in the big 12. Hopefully we get Pitt and VT so that gets fixed. cinn is NOT a rival.

Well I think there’s about a 99% chance you’ll get Pitt and maybe 50% chance you’ll get VT within about 5 years.

Pitt seems like the most perfect fit among all the teams with 0% chance of big ten/sec invite. VT I’d put as having decent coin flip chance for SEC after UVA joins Big Ten. Certainly no lock.

These sort of hypothetical rivalry arrangements highlight something the Big 10 did right with their new scheduling: teams get up to 3 protected rivals but are not forced to have any. This resulted in Iowa having 3 with Nebraska, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, while Penn St has no assigned rivals.

The Big 12 needs to acknowledge and protect the existing rivalries, but should not force something just for the sake of giving everyone the same amount.

If we apply the up to 3 rule to these, the matchups feel more natural:
  • Arizona: ASU (Territorial Cup)
  • ASU: Arizona (Territorial Cup)
  • Baylor: TCU (Revivalry), BYU (The Potluck), TTech
  • BYU: Utah (Holy War), Baylor (The Potluck)
  • UCF: Houston (Space Race)
  • Cincinnati: WVU
  • Colorado: Utah (Rumble in the Rockies)
  • Houston: UCF (Space Race), TCU, TTech
  • Iowa State: KState (Farmaggedon), Kansas
  • Kansas: KState (Sun Flower), ISU
  • Kansas State: KState (Sun Flower), ISU (Farmaggedon)
  • Oklahoma State: TTech (Dust Bowl)
  • TCU: Baylor (Revivalry), Houston
  • Texas Tech: OSU (Dust Bowl), Houston, Baylor
  • WVU: Cinci
  • Utah: BYU (Holy War), Colorado (Rumble in the Rockies)

This would give us Baylor, Houston, and Tech with 3 rivalries, BYU, ISU, KU, KSU, TCU, and Utah with 2 each, and Zona, ASU, UCF, Cinci, Colorado, OSU, and WVU with only 1 rivalry locked in.

I would honestly argue that one of our bigger conference rivals in recent years (go back 10-15 or so) is Baylor. Huge miss by not including them in for ISU or us for them etc. Football games are always close, save for the debacle in one of the last Rhoads years, and basketball games are always competitive no matter the season, even Prohm's abysmal 2-win team took that seasons National Champ Baylor to the brink in Ames.

I think VT's landing spot is entirely dependent on how far the SEC is willing to grow. The B1G is already at 18*(edit: I thought they had 20), and seems poised to go to as many as 24 with UVA, UNC, GT, Stanford, Cal, and FSU. Though ND will always get the priority if they ever relent to the Big 10 overtures.

Does the SEC want to go to 20? I would expect Clemson, Miami, Kansas, and NCSt/VT.

Whatever is left after that is entirely up to Yormark and the Big 12 to invite. We are at 16 now but lose Kansas. I suspect Yormark wants to grow a lot, especially with an eye on BBall. So shooting for at least 24, inviting Duke, Cuse, Louisville, Pitt, BC, Wake, SDSU, UCONN, and whoever doesn't get the call NCSt/VT. That leaves SMU as the only ACC leftover.

Competitiveness doesn’t equal being a rival.

Ok, well I kept a bookmark in the 2017 (or maybe it was 2018) game when punches were thrown and players were ejected. Namely David Montgomery, after they initially kicked out one of our OL but then reversed the decision and brought him back. There is bad blood between the programs. I suppose it is maybe a bit muted since Rhule left. I think the Rhule/Campbell thing really drove it for a couple years.

I don't think there's been any more juice to it than any other conference matchup since Aranda got there. In fact, I'd even say I like Aranda. Personally, I don't feel much of anything about Baylor and they aren't even close to being a conference rival in my eyes. I'd put them firmly behind KU, KSU, WVU, OSU, and probably even Colorado now that they're back.

We have a very different definition of rivalry then. Imo, KU is not even our rival despite having some good basketball games against each other. Iowa is our only true rival with K State slowly gaining steam into one over the past 10 years. Even then KSU will tell them KU is their biggest rival. Kind of sucks we don’t have a true rival in the conference.

The best indication of a rivalry is when the other team refuses to call you a rival lol.
With Tang and the football team k state is certainly a rival but I guess if you're not terminally online like some of us are you wouldn't see all the twitter feuding and not realize the rivalry is alive and active even in the offseason.

There are a lot of rivalries that hold unequal weight on each side. K-State may see Kansas as their main rival, but KU's biggest rival will always be Mizzou. Colorado's will always be Nebraska, while Nebraska's will always be Oklahoma, and Oklahoma's will always be Texas. Texas will claim its Oklahoma, but it's really A&M, just like Iowa will say its Nebraska or Minnesota, when it is really ISU.

Kansas I do think has sort of become a true rival with ISU. Look at the all time hardware for Big 12 basketball. ISU is a distant second, but still second, and third is a distant third to ISU. Just the fact that we've gotten in their way more than most other schools in the conference even with our inconsistency means if they have a hoops rival it's us. We'll see how Houston and Arizona do long term and how they do with whomever follows Self.

Has anyone lost more close games vs KU in bball in the past 25 years than ISU?

dammit

WTF??? That dbag drake troll just took a potshot at ISU degrees on his locked in big 12 podcast. Mentioned us, Houston, WV as schools that are bad academics. We are one of the better academic schools in the big 12. Dude is a moron.
He knows that hating on ISU get him KLICKZ and moneyZ. I just picture him as basically Jean-Ralphio...

He and Kurtz will NEVER get my clicks, they're useless tools.

Agreed. Additionally, I know some like to claim KU as a rival, but KU's fans don't view us that way. They want to beat us and recognize who the better teams are, but their rivals are Mizzou and Kstate. They are too arrogant to claim others as rivals.

I was bored to death and watched Locked on Big 12. he claimed he had inside sources who had the list of college football teams valued by ESPN and Fox by tv value.

WVU was the top big 12 team at 21. next was oklahoma state at 32. most of the rest were in the 30's or 41 in the case of byu. Pitt was 50.

Every Kansas fan I know (and I know a lot) see Iowa State as a rival. Especially in basketball. Not their "arch" rival, but still a rival. I also find KU fans way more tolerable than Iowa or K-State fans.

I've occasionally listened to Toll in the past, not for a while though. Although he shows some talent at times, I think I will now ignore him now. His Baylor bias is showing, and a real professional would not take a swipe at ISU like that. It shows his ignorance and inexperience. But he sure keeps talking...

As far as Kurtz goes, yeah I'l never click on that KSU moron again.

I don't view Baylor as a rival. The Baylor hatred mostly started when Montgomery and the Baylor guy got into it. It wasn't Baylor against ISU. It was 2 players only.
