Signing an LOI is no guarantee he'd come. But he will make it here. Who would choose playing for the Greek National Team over playing for Fred if given the chance?

Competition when your on the greek national team >>>>>>> than cap city league against Drake and local HS talent.

I wouldn't be surprised (nor disappointed) if he chose to stay over there and better his game this summer over coming here and playing a few pick up games vs lower level talent (assuming he makes it here in the fall).

Read the post I responded to. He was talking about Giorgos staying in Greece after he played for the national team.

Well I don't know why people keep saying he is barely 17. He was born in 96' (man makes me feel old) so is turning 18 next month. And would be eligible for the NBA after a season.

Oh really? I never seen his birthday, just the day he committed they said he just turned 17 four days earlier.

Interesting that today's DM Register didn't even mention this new commitment (at least the edition I get), yet had more than enough on Fran's new commit. (It used to be labeled the paper we depend on ?).

The Cyclones signed 7-foot-1 Greek center Giorgos Tsalmpouris on Sunday. Tsalmpouris will play for the Greek national team this summer before joining Iowa State. It's quite the relief for ISU, whose second-tallest player at the beginning of the upcoming season will still be 6-foot-7 Georges Niang (the Giorgos-Georges combination should be deadly for both opponents and broadcasters).

Ya gotta love the last line by sbnation

I'm pretty sure Randy Peterson reported on this commitment on Sunday actually.

I assume by "signed" they just mean a verbal commit?

Do the same limitations exist with foreign players in terms of contacts, no-contact periods for coaches, and signing periods? Can he sign at any point? Or do we have to wait for some particular date on the calendar?

Not sure where that came from. He was born in June of 96'. Man that was a fun month for me. Just graduated from High School :)

Van Coleman was very high on Giorgos today on 1460 over the lunch hour. Said he was a better version of Michalik with more versatility down low but quick enough like Michelik to play with forwards on the perimeter. Asked if he was a project, his reply, "the Greek National team does not extend invites to projects, they obviously think he can contribute at an elite level right now". Also said "level of competition he has faced no worse than Iowa or Minnesota high school basketball and you don't average a triple double and 28 pts if you can't ball I don't care the level of competition". With Niang, Hogue, Nader, McKay and now Giorgos Iowa State will have a loaded front court with so many different combinations. Not to mention the Dozer getting some enforcer minutes :)

This is all sounding too good to be true. Is he legitimately committed? I know all the media guys are on board with it but where did the info originate from? There was the tweet saying he would take visits but isn't committed. I want real answers!

Van Coleman you say? Good chance he got that evaluation from CF.

This is a good point to consider. The Greek national team has been a powerhouse in Europe and one of the top world competitors in the past decade or so. If he is playing with them, that does speak volumes. However, I wonder if initial reports are that he'll play with the sub-21 national team, or will he be playing against real men with the national team in international competition. If that is the case, this might be a great opportunity to watch him in some additional games.

Or the kid can play and isn't a "project". Julio was a skinny euro and wasn't a project.
