Hey bud calm down. I know some High school coaches that are in contact with the isu coaching staff. See sometimes College coaches make friends with high school coaches to set up some kind of recruiting ground. and believe it or not coaches are regular people (not CIA agents sworn to secrecy) Who share small pieces of info like whats going on at work and there opinions of whats going on, with there friends

Now im not claiming to be best buds with Paul Rhoads. im just saying im friends with some of the High school coaches and some other football trainers.

Yeah, probably should have worded it differently. BTW, nice job of misusing "their" twice in one sentence. No offense.

that's all this is. a coaches opinion. And if you interpreted it differently I'm sorry i wasn't more clear.

After your first post, someone said "noone knows yet, spot will be earned in practice". Your response was "not according to the coaches"

He actually didn't misuse "their." You can't misuse something you don't use. He misused "there."

actually he said.
Nobody knows. Whoever ends up starting will have to earn it in practice.

the coach said that this is what he believes will happen.

All it means is at this point in time, this is what they have planned. That doesnt mean something else wont happen. I dont believe Tiller can do it. He is a great athlete but being able to throw a football really far doesn't make you a quarterback.

Disagree with that. Hardly ever is an open QB battle won in the spring. A leader will probably emerge, but I'd bet money that the battle will go on through the summer and into the fall. It wouldn't surprise me if 2 QBs get meaningful snaps in the first game or two. That's not optimal for sure, but Tiller clearly has not done enough to give the staff confidence in him and I really doubt that he can improve enough in one spring to claim the position outright.

Obviously, the sooner a starter is declared, the better it is for the team. We saw a few years ago what a QB controversy during the season can do to a team. But, letting things play out during the summer keeps everyone working at a top level throughout the offseason plus helps to prevent transfers.

I don't need anyone to agree with me. I was simply giving my professional opinion. Linguistics is the key here. Whomever emerges as the "leader" in the spring will be the guy. The staff may not name him for the reasons you listed, but that leader will be their guy. Every single staff goes into the spring with "open competitions" for those same reasons. But someone has to start getting the extra reps come fall practice in order for ISU to ready to compete in game #1. Do you think their going to keep the competition going and possibly sacrifice wins because the QB is not ready to play?

Also, I never said that Tiller would win the job in the spring. I said, "the job will be won in the spring."

Jantz as starter and Barnett as backup?? Paging Mrs. Capello...

Hey,i'm here. I guess we should get James out of there right away since according to some on here he has no chance of playing!! Actually I'm watching him outside our front windows,we live next to a large field and some of his college buddies are throwing and running routes, and actually he looks pretty good. We has several good conversations with the coaches since break started, and NO ONE is listed as the starter. they all have to earn it and that is Ok with James. As i told you guys before he is hungry and said the job will be his, we will see. So i don't know who the source on the street is but we have spoke with both Rhoads and Herman and they are our sources. Anyway this kid turned into a slob what the hell did ISU do to him. At least when he is at school we don't see it. Anyway Happy New Year to all.

How about we let the coaches decide? I'm not surprised this ******** about the qb situation is still going on though.

The ******** will continue until at least the first game even if a starter is named in fall practice.

Agree. Coach Rhoads and Coach Herman are going to play the guy they feel gives them the best chance to win. And whoever does NOT win the job needs to keep pushing to take the job. Because they could be the next man in because of improvement or injury.

That is what I love about CPR, players can EARN their PT. Which is what they want. And keep working hard. Because you may just be an injury or two away from starting.

James is young. Lots of football ahead of him. I wish him luck. And may the best man win.

Here nor there
I am not ready to write-off any of the returning QB's, they are all either young or inexperienced. Tiller was ahead of Capello and Barnett, but did not remove doubt in his limited playing time. Barnett playing behind Tiller as true freshman is not too incriminating, and it is plausible that by next fall has will move ahead of Tiller in practice.
Imo Barnett will be the starter, but I am not confident enough to put money on it.

Whoever starts next year has a lot to work on between now and then.

Yeah that slob thing is not unique to ISU or football players. I think every college student, especially guys, fall prey to that. No matter how nice they kept their room before college.

I am going to post this and I beg you not to ake offense. We all like the insight and enjoy a completely different perspective but:

-This board will continue to do things like this. People will speculate and people will throw out predictions. Some will contain James and some will make him a non-factor. I wouldn't get worked up by either one

-Come next fall, if James is the starter, there will be critics. Some will be unfair, some will be unjustified. It has been my observation that the best QB on the team is the backup at that point.

-In short, you skin will have to thick for the next year in terms of this site.

Agree. A lot of people were throwing AA under the bus. Then he got injured. Then they missed AA and loved him.

Now they are dumping on Tiller big time. And Tiller doesn't deserve it. ALL of our QB's will work hard to win the job. We should support whoever is on the field. Trust the Coaches.

Yeah, like I said after your first post this wasn't a good idea. CF has 12000 members according to Chris. Getting bent out of shape over a few members opinions is close minded. The vast majority of our fan base understand spring ball is where this will be decided. It's natural for fans to hope the new guy is the next big thing. Since Coach Mac brought this program back from the dead we've had 2 solid QBs both made it to the NFL (Sage and Seneca). Rosenfels a lightly recruited Iowa kid that worked his way through the system and Wallace who took Ames by storm.

My advice is take what you read here with a grain of salt or stay away all together.
As fans we deserve a place speculate on all things Iowa State. As a parent this subject hits too close to home for you. You said before your son is looking forward to the competition. As a life long Cyclone I'm glad to hear that and hope every team member and recruit we have has the same attitude.
