If we’re taking 15-18 recruits this year, we’re about halfway through this class. Nice.

I'm glad to nab one away from Neal Brown. He's building something up there.

Is he getting really good recruits or something? I have nothing against him and he seems like able enough but I haven’t been super impressed with his coaching.

Remember the days when the story was you couldn't get kids to Ames because it was too far from a major airport? Ah, good times. 5* culture. People know when they are around something special, and when people genuinely care for you and want you to succeed. Not to mention, Ames is actually a beautiful campus. Very different than most of the SEC universities and towns. Sometimes recruits want something different as part of their personal and professional development, not to mention it is still #FocusTown.

Yes, he’s getting some pretty good recruits. A handful of four stars each year. Proximity to North Carolina and the Georgia/Florida corridor helps.

I still remember reading about the recruiting of Terrence Allen early in the Orr era. Short kid but with hops!

From Riviera Beach FL (basically West Palm Beach). It was one of those bitterly cold winter days and they're driving up from the airport. The coach picking him up is very concerned wondering what Terrence in thinking about the bare trees and brown corn fields along the way. Terrence pipes up and says, "I think I'm going to go to college here."

You never can tell. Some kids want to experience an all new environment just for the change. I can understand that and we should actually maybe sell it as something to Southern kids. Obviously not all are going to bite, but it might give a kid a new perspective about experiencing new things in life.

Is that different than before?

West Virginia has always been able to land some higher level recruits. Their proximity to a lot of higher population areas outside of their state helps. Plus many of the states that boarder WV have a bunch of good football players.

I feel like having 3 Safeties allows us to go after CBs that are elite cover guys and tacklers, but don't have to be burners. It's nice if they are fast, but it's just not as necessary. We need them to be able to cover short and tackle extremely well. I think that lets us go after some guys that the big dogs pass on.

I'm always surprised when we get kids from FL/GA/AZ/even TX to an extent, to commit to playing in Ames IA and live up here during the winter months. Has to be some of the most insane culture shock known to man
Makes you a tough b###### though.

Makes sense with that they wanted to do with McDonald before he started getting a sack or being blatantly held on every play. Their trying to squeeze these gaps in the zone down as tight as they can with long and tall athletes.

Kind of like any non-Floridian visiting Florida.
That and Miami, Florida State, and Florida aren't really blue blood anymore. I know Florida is a really solid program - but we can compete with them I think. Now we aren't going to get the majority of guys with a FL offer and us, but point still stands. None of those programs are perennial playoff programs.

FL getting absolutely rocked by OU in the sugar bowl made me convinced we would have housed them last year too.

I once bumped into a new student from Bermuda, outside Helser. It was a “chilly” day in September, temps in the fifties—and he was shivering like it was ten below.

He asked me if he should buy a leather jacket to keep warm when winter hit.

I said no. I suggested a parka.
A light snowmobile suit and a Parka! (no kidding; that's Minnesota!!)

Sure it's cold in the winter, but it's nothing like Minnesota (I lived in southern MN 2 years and it was SO much colder than Ames). So more Northern climates can be much worse than Iowa. You do have to put up with the winters.

But the Spring and Fall are very nice, the Summers are too (compared to Southern climates). You can actually go outside and do stuff in the summer time in Ames. Compare this to the South, and it's really not that bad. It might actually have some appeal.
