A light snowmobile suit and a Parka! (no kidding; that's Minnesota!!)

Sure it's cold in the winter, but it's nothing like Minnesota (I lived in southern MN 2 years and it was SO much colder than Ames). So more Northern climates can be much worse than Iowa. You do have to put up with the winters.

But the Spring and Fall are very nice, the Summers are too (compared to Southern climates). You can actually go outside and do stuff in the summer time in Ames. Compare this to the South, and it's really not that bad. It might actually have some appeal.

I live in the south (nashville). This won't be a popular opinion, but living in the south (in terms of climate) is way better than living in iowa. You can still do things in the summer. Much like northern folks acclimating to the cold, southern folks acclimate to the heat. Saying how much worse MN is than Iowa doesn't make Iowa winters any more desirable IMO. They both suck. I hate the cold. It was a major factor in me leaving the midwest for greener pastures in terms of weather. To each their own. Give me the heat all day over the Iowa cold.

Ya his response sounds like an Iowa native. The weather is pretty brutal here. Very hot and very cold.

That and Miami, Florida State, and Florida aren't really blue blood anymore. I know Florida is a really solid program - but we can compete with them I think. Now we aren't going to get the majority of guys with a FL offer and us, but point still stands. None of those programs are perennial playoff programs.

FL getting absolutely rocked by OU in the sugar bowl made me convinced we would have housed them last year too.
Florida wanted no part of that game in any way and didn’t have some of their better players but I agree. We could of taken care of them as well.

I'm surprised they showed up, they had to know what the probable outcome was going to be.

I thought the same thing until I did 10 years in the south. Liked the work, but they're still fighting the war. Will never go back. Taking people over weather
But you're right, to each their own.

There's another thing/reason, the midwest/Iowa people are great. I do live in southern MO however. I do not care for the cold winters. Thank god for air-conditioning though!

I'm always surprised when we get kids from FL/GA/AZ/even TX to an extent, to commit to playing in Ames IA and live up here during the winter months. Has to be some of the most insane culture shock known to man

The freshman football players from Florida in the dorms/at house parties were always an interesting social dynamic. Two very different worlds colliding.

To other people’s point about culture, is Nashville really the south? Same could be said about Florida.

West Virginia has always been able to land some higher level recruits. Their proximity to a lot of higher population areas outside of their state helps. Plus many of the states that boarder WV have a bunch of good football players.
They've been in that 4-7 range in the conference for years, and are always getting 1-3 four star guys. They are in a nice recruiting location, but being the geographical outlier in the conference probably hurts a bit.

I do think Brown is a solid coach, but we'll see. He's 9-11 in two seasons against FBS competition and 7-10 in the conference. I think they'll remain solid, but I'm not too worried about them being a consistent contender just yet.

I lived a lot of my life in northern Iowa, about 10 miles from the Minnesota border. I was pleasantly surprised and a little shocked how mild the winters were in Ames, comparatively speaking, to what I was used to, where it was not uncommon to have 5-foot walls of snow on either side of the road, like driving through a tunnel.

6'1 corner with a nice offer list. Good addition to this class.
Interesting note regarding our recruiting class so far: every single commit with the exception of the punter has at least 2 other p5 offers to there name. It doesn’t seem like that long ago when you’d have over half of the class without any other p5 offers.

Truth! Northern Iowa, say Mason City area, and southern MN is a whole 'nother level of cold vs. Ames.

Feel sorry for the folks living in points further north. Can you imagine the fortitude it would take to get thru winters in midwestern Canada, Alaska...Siberia?
