From what I am hearing, BYU and Pitt are the ones being most heavily pursued and they are both trying to talk ND into joining them.

This does seem extremely unlikely, but fun to imagine. The Big 12 would be stronger than the old Big 12 with these changes.

North
Pitt
Notre Dame
Iowa State
BYU
Kansas
Kansas State

South
Missouri
Oklahoma
Oklahoma St
Texas
Texas Tech
Baylor

Why is BYU in north and Mizzou in the South? I'd much rather see old north teams stay together. Also most teams in your north division would have a massive trip going to Provo.

You could align them as you suggest, but call them East and West Divisions:

East
Pitt
Notre Dame
Iowa State
Missouri
Kansas
Kansas State

West
BYU
Oklahoma
Oklahoma St
Texas
Texas Tech
Baylor

I say if Notre Dame joined the conference, just have them and Texas be division captains and pick the teams in the division like picking a team in high school. Probably about as fair as anything they'll come up with. Got to believe if they were in, BYU and probably Pittsburg would be, too. Maybe then they can add Arkansas, Louisville, Airforce and Houston and be the first superconference. Of course, if all that happened I bet they'd also give away free beer on Welch Ave. after all home games and we'd bowl in the south endzone.... :jimlad: We can still dream big....

I agree with the general theme of your post. I've lived in Chicago for 11 years and went to our game @NIU so I feel I can comment with some accuracy on them. The Big Ten agrees with your post too because they added tiny population Nebraska when they could have chose massive markets instead.

Illinois and Northwestern don't even have the Chicago market. Iowa is a much bigger deal here, TWO new "Iowa" bars just started promoting themselves in my neighborhood alone, they have fricking billboards promoting themselves. ISU fans won't want to hear that, but the Hawkeyes own Chicago more than local teams do.

My take on the market:
1. Bears
2-100. Bears
101. Michigan
102. Ohio State
103. ND
104. Iowa (when Iowa is good they jump ND lately)
105. Wisconsin
106. Rest of B10 including the two Illinois schools
107. NIU

That said, I'll defend the people who bring up NIU to an extent. They are far more attractive than any of the other MAC schools. Their games are always on either 670 or WGN 720 radio, both stations completely dwarf any radio coverage that a Non-Texas team gets in the Big 12, especially 720. Usually about half of their games are televised on regular local TV in Chicago with no cable or dish needed.

They're a massive step down from an addition like BYU, but if people are considering Memphis they should consider NIU. For example NIU would easily be better than Colorado State that has been mentioned.

Okay, so NIU is still larger in Chicago's market than any Big 12 team. If NIU joins a major conference, their stock will raise in Chicago. I lived in Illinois for 10 years and people don't even know what the Big 12 is. This would at least get kids from Chicago familiar with the conference and therefore more recruitable. And which Big 12 school would most likely pick up Chicago kids? I would argue ISU!

I wouldn't. NIU brings us nothing but dilution. Your argument is ridiculous. I can name ten better options than them.

A little off topic but, what are the chances the "super-conferences" go to 18 or 20 team leagues, instead of 16? I know 16 makes a little more sense, scheduling wise, but I would think it would be talked about more. Is everyone just assuming the magic number is 16?

If we somehow grab Notre Dame, maybe Illinois would welcome a change of scenery. That would get us even with the Big 10.

oh for God's sake. If Notre Dame is a 1 in a million shot then stealing a B1G team is 1 in infinity. NO ONE IS LEAVING THE B1G unless things change drastically more than you can imagine in the distant future in college football.

In reality there are only maybe 40 teams that really drive the big TV contracts. If you took the top 40 teams only the major networks would probably pay about as much for their contracts as they do now. Any number over 64 just cuts the pie into more pieces without growing the overall size of the pie. The more teams that get a slice below the top 40 means less money for the top teams.

It's the American way, if you are rich and powerful, have political influence and can control the media you can get even richer and more powerful at the expense of the middle class and poor.

Since the Aggies are gone I thought it would be good to start a new thread with information on the expansion of the conference....not your brainstorms but new information coming down the pike.

I'll start:

BYU board and their thoughts on the invite to the Big 12

BYU Future Affiliation Poll • BYU Football • CougarCorner

This article is kind of a late night regurgitation of stuff that's already been said by other outlets today. However there are some statements by OU that are pretty emphatic. OU says that they are working hard to expand the Big 12 and the article mentions Air Force. Just my gut feeling that we won't see a whole lot more action until next week.

Big 12 expansion targets may lie out West - College Football -MCT - Macon.com

If we are indeed courting someone from Florida, even UCF, that would be a great get IMO. UCF has a huge base.
I guess I may be wrong in stating in the other massive thread that there was no evidence of anyone from the Big12 talking to UCF. UCF would be a great get IMO. I think the third team will be the AFA Fighting Falcons; give BYU a reasonably nearby neighbor within the conference.

That phenom's been proven with Johnny Orr as his prime recruiting area was Chi-town.

I swear, Pickens thinks he knows everything about everything solely because he has $$$ to throw around.

TCU adds nothing to the Big 12 except adding another piece of the pie needing to be handed out. TCU is just a horrible idea for the long term liability of this conference.
