I was dead wrong. I thought we would lose by 7 and get down by 10 or more early in the first half. I was 100% wrong and am glad to eat crow. Solid game.

There was so much fools gold in that "close" loss to Purdue. There is nothing more overrated in sports that a team getting stomped, then making a late charge to make it close. It is nearly meaningless, yet people act like it is a useful indicator. The other factor is everyone was buying that Purdue was not just the best team in the country, but they were clearly the best team. That's a really good Purdue team. And Iowa fighting back was impressive, but in the end it's just another backdoor cover that doesn't really mean much.

This is not a bad Iowa team, but it's sort of the most extreme Fran team ever, where it's mostly just a bunch of OK players, and no clear cut roles and rotations. Murray is a very good player, but ISU's defense was absolutely dominant.

I've been on the "this team plays as hard as any on defense since Floyd's teams," but I was wrong. This team plays harder. Favorite sequence of the night was late in the game, and Iowa has the ball. There's a loose ball at the top of the key, and Hunter full on superman dives for it going toward half court but Iowa retains possession. Immediately there is another loose ball and Hunter comes back and dives again to get a jump ball (IIRC).

5 star culture play right there.

And did that with a commanding lead. Think about that. Up a pile of points and still diving to get loose balls to try and go up by more. What a concept.

Indiana’a “close” football game with Ohio State last year is why their fans thought they were more deserving in bowl pecking order than ISU. They were down 40 and Ohio State got bored.

I was a little nervous at the beginning when we were trading blows at the beginning. Thought it was going to be one of those close nail biters we’ve seen in this game.

Remember Iowa was up 15-11, then Tre knocked down a 3 to finally get the offense going. That started something like a 13-2 run and we never really looked back.

I’m thrilled we won and all but ca

Kenpom is useless for a team like Iowa State because last years data is still heavily weighted. Kenpom can't properly evaluate a team with such a massive swing so i would ignore their rankings until we are about half way through conference play.,

If you're still looking for Kenpom-like analytical data without any data from the previous season factored in, on Bart Torvik, change the date on the main page to "20211102" instead of "20211101". That focuses the data strictly on this season alone. Bart Torvik Rankings with Last Season's Data Removed

If you do that, as of this morning, we are ranked 16th. Here's entire Big 12 by that methodology:

  1. Baylor (3)
  2. Kansas (8)
  3. Texas (11)
  4. Iowa State (16) - (we have the 6th best Adj. Defensive Efficiency in the nation per Torvik removing last year's data)
  5. Texas Tech (21)
  6. Oklahoma State (36)
  7. Oklahoma (41)
  8. West Virginia (57)
  9. TCU (79)
  10. Kansas State (91)
Now for other programs like West Virginia that have coaching and player continuity, last season's data should probably still be factored in a bit. So I wouldn't rely entirely on this methodology. But just another interesting way to look at this season so far.

I watched Iowa twice and their house of cards defense so figured that wouldn't last. Their press made me a tad nervous until it got to the 3 minute mark. Probably PTSD from other late game situations.

That said, the way Hunter gathered the ball from the opening tip and walked up told us these guys weren't ******* around.

The thing I loved most from last night? We got into their heads on defense.

After the last few years of losing this game handily, it’s nice to be on the other side of the mental chess.
Totally agree with this. The defense was tight on Murray and Bohannon and any shooter Iowa brought in off the bench. But even when Murray and Bobo would get free and have an open look, they seemed to hurry their shots a little bit even though they didn't have to. That contributed to their poor shooting as well.

The defense was in their heads like, "I need to get this off quick because I won't be open for long." It totally sped them up and messed with the rhythm of their release on their shots

Effort and mild defensive success will piss off teams who aren't mentally-strong. We'll see more of this. And it's an area our team excels so far -- we never quit and never stop playing.

It's insane to me that we held a ~90 PPG team to 53 points last night. A 25 PPG player was held under 10 points. We had more offensive rebounds than they did defensive.

Almost nonsensical.

Iowa was up 17-16 with just over 10 minutes left in the first half.

At that point ISU went on a 15-2 run over 6+ minutes to go up 31-19. It was never closer than 7 (or win % <70) after that

A few things:

I've said it before and I'll say it again, outside of injuries ISU is a single digit seed in the tourney and please no one dumb me anymore.

With that kiss to the students it's apparent that for the last 7 years Georges Niang has been living rent free in Jblow's head. And the guy needs to get some help.

You carried the Kool-Aid for us in preseason and you were right.
We shouldn't be doubting your perspective on this bunch anymore at all.

It's lunchtime the following day and the smile still hasn't vanished from my face (which could have something to do with the fact I live in Iowa City). Anyway, I graduated ISU in 1986 and lived out-of-state a number of years, so I didn't see much of the Tim Floyd defense-oriented teams. I've never seen an ISU defense, scramble (double the post and get back out), scrap and flat out hustle (Hunter full-extension dives) like this. Watching EIU bend, break and throw in the towel was priceless! Let's go State!!!

Imagine losing a mental chess match to Fran... my gods.
