How many mid majors and double digit seeds are dropping threes left and right. I don’t think there is a shortage of shooters due to NIL. Maybe ones that can defend.

I get that might not fit into your defensive strategy but at some point you got to have some offense to go with it.
They desperately need guards that can shoot. Again, they thought they had Greene, Williams and Grill for scoring. That is a lot of shooting guards missing from a team that is based on defense. In addition if Shoon, Ward, Jones, Watson, or even Kutz couple make a 10 foot shot things wouldn't be quite so ugly.

The good news is that guards are pretty easy to find. Big guys that can shoot and defend are the hard part and on paper TJ has the guys to do that next year.

I imagine that Bob Jones and Tre King will likely take their Covid years with us, and that Ward will likely not. Should have 3 scholarships open to improve the roster with.

The great news is that we now have established success in the program and have plenty of opportunity for positions of need. I trust this staff to identify those needs and go after the right guys.

With the talent influx next year I think we raise both the ceiling and floor of this current team. I’m excited for the future of Iowa State basketball for sure!

I'm just glad we didn't lose to drake or some other mid major. That would have been worse.

its today. not 2 years ago. ive had 2 years of watching him underperform frequently. he has exceeded expectations but still left me wanting him to be better in some situations. mostly between the time the first half starts and the 2nd half ends.
Yes, you are correct. We should evaluate TJs performance on today, rather than the last two years and 60+ games. And we shouldn’t certainly not evaluate them in the context of the ******** 2-22 team he took over (and turned around in one season).

I hate that you are making me defend him after this ridiculous game

We should also acknowledge that it was two terrible seasons. Not 15.

Honest answer. You're ******* dumb if you think this. He was a phone call away from getting AJ
Green.
Yah, I don't think this. I think he is trying, but not hitting and forming a team with whay he can get. Takes a year or two to prove he is a good person and coach, then gets better players to say yes.

Pitt had more size than most opponents we played this year in the post.
Those 2 stick figures they have playing center don't exactly qualify. Did you watch the Mississippi State game? They were completely overmatched. Pitts inside game looked as soft as Iowa the other night and we made them look good. They were definitely the worst interior defense we've faced since December.

Every Big 12 team we played has more size and length than Pitt.

If you hold an opponent to 59 points in an NCAA tournament game, you should win 9 out of 10 times. Instead, we lost by 18.

ISU has done this a few times (UAB got to 60, tOSU got 62 in 2019) over the last twoish decades and lost tourney games.

When are you going to understand that one game doesn't define how a team plays or looks?

Right. And At what period during those 15 years would this level of success in a coaches first two seasons not be considered successful?

No one’s making you. And I like TJ. I want him to succeed. But he clearly has some deficiencies. He needs to address them either threw reflection and growth or get somebody on staff to help scoring.

Impossible to say one way or the other without actually being there for all of the things that led to that outcome. In the end, I trust that Caleb needed to go his own way, and it was going to be certain that whenever that happened, the ceiling of this team would be lower.

I'll never doubt any coach for making that kind of call. You know it isn't something they ever want to do inside of a season. You should assume it's required.

Lost by 18, not to one of the better teams in the tournament, but lost by 18 to a team that barely made it into the tournament. And this has been indicative of the last half of the season, where ISU just lays offensive eggs against not really good teams. A similar thing was going on last year.

There is something that needs fixing beyond talent. There is an issue with the strategic, fundamental, and mental preparation in the offensive game that the coaching staff needs to figure out. When you can beat BU three times, KU, and UT, your offensive shouldn't get shut down by a team that had to "play-in" to the tournament. When the simple, basic offense doesn't work, this team just falls apart.

Fair enough.

But you can't just point at that. He only got one shot to set the culture, and he's shown enough over two seasons to say he got that mostly right.
TJ is good at culture and other coaching essentials, but he needs to develop more prep and game day chops. Don't blame the players for the lack of an effective game plan or in game adjustments.

That will likely never be a consistently reliable part of his game. What we need more than Lipsey being able to shoot threes is someone else on the roster as a ball handler. Hopefully that can be Jeremiah Williams or someone from the portal.
He was in the 34% range from 3 as a junior in HS, and then in the 20s his senior year, so it isn't impossible for him to get to a respectable level. He shoots FTs very well, which is a good sign that he is capable.
