What does this mean? Not familiar with "darkness" as a football term.
But the backs are leaving yards on the field because they aren’t cutting properly.

“They ran to darkness too much and they are going sideways a lot instead of vertically down the field,â€￾ Herman said.

Go Cyclones - ISU far from perfect in 2-0 start

I guess its the opposite of running to daylight... but wow, never heard it put that way!

It's the opposite of "running to daylight". The backs are not finding the open holes. The purpose of the zone game is find openings in the defensive front and making the quick cuts into "daylight". Instead, they are just running into the hole whether it's open or not or streching the play to the sideline which benefits the defense. Defenses want to string out the plays to the sidelines. It adds an extra defender to the field.

UCONN fan here. This game makes me nervous for various reasons. I watched IOWA vs. ISU game last week. Your QB is very good. Your defense is pretty decent too.

I think if we can bring some kind of passing game to the table, we got a chance to win. UCONN defense is very good. We will put a lot more pressure on your QB than IOWA. Last week UCONN defense had 7 sacks, allowed 2 out 16 3rd down conversions, forced a fumble that resulted in a TD and blocked a punt that resulted in another TD yet somehow we lost. If our offense can hold it together somewhat for 4 quarters, we will win.

It is not easy to win at the RENT. The crowd will be loud tonight.

Good luck Cyclones. UCONN should take this one to make a statement. It could be a preview of future conference games.

Chicago area Clones may already know that Mike from Milwaukee, the retired, drunken postal worker/prognosticator on the Score has again made Iowa State plus the points one of his three college picks this week. Northwestern was another and I can't remember the third. Good sign again. ISU football hasn't had this much play in these parts since Bernie Lincicome picked Blaise Bryant to win the Heisman back in 90.
