Yeah I think some great things are ahead for this group but Maui won't be the bellwether.

Maybe ISU was just staying vanilla but their offense is in a bit of a phone booth so far.

If they can have a chance late vs. Auburn that would be really good imo.
Johni Broome is a huge huge test for our bigs - maybe the best true center in the country along with Dickinson (I'd take Broome, but that's just me).

He put up 20 & 9 with 5 blocks against Houston's bigs - and against North Alabama in their last game had 30 & 17 in 26 minutes - insane against any competition.

I don't think any of their guards have stood out especially, but there's 5 of them that have played 20-25 minutes a game and average 10-12 point a game so far. The biggest problem for us is that those 5 guards have shot 42% from deep totaled 8.5 made threes a game.

It's not a good matchup for us, at any point in the season. Houston was not able to get them sped up - Auburn only had 11 turnovers that game. To be successful we need to get their guards flustered and turning the ball over.

Good thing we still have our "Shead" in Lipsey. Also Gilbert>>>>Cryer defensively.

Remember we were horrible at the Thanksgiving tourney last year (but really good the year before). I agree it will set the tone, but it's not prescriptive of what will happen the rest of the season
1-2 with only win being come from behind against what was a non tournament VCU team. Lost to non ncaa tournament VA Tech, think they kind of went off from 3, then lost to under manned Texas A&M. You are right, these holiday tournaments really are not blueprints to anything. They can be fun, nothing more.

If we do anything in this tourney other than 0-3, I'll be happy. It's much better teams than the tourney we were in last year, and I'm guessing this team will take some time to start firing on all cylinders. Our backcourt is a known strength, this will be a good test / "Welcome to the P5 level" for the new guys in the frontcourt. Basketball's not like football where you need to win all your marquee games, plenty of chances to pick up big wins in conference play.

Does anyone really know, what TJs thought is though? He knows what he has in Watson so maybe play Chatfield to see what ge can do? Maybe trying to get Watson a little hungry for more playing time? I have no idea.

It's fun to speculate but I know damn well, that TJ has made way more right choices than wrong ones in his tenure as coach, in a environment that 99.9% of this board would fold under. Basically having to rerecruit everyone every yr and then figure out what new pieces to bring in.
Guys, Chatfield is a post player. Watson is a forward. He's competing with Nojus and Heise for minutes. We'll need three posts.

but hes big!

yeah, he won't see much PT in Big 12 play.

Maui will be a good gauge for where he's at but if he wants to get 8-10 mins a game he'll need to improve.
Being big absolutely means something in Big 12 play. Are we going to go small and only play two posts?

Was just talking to someone about this. By December 12th I will basically have a much better understanding of what this team is capable of.

They lay an egg out in Hawaii, come back and get beat by Marquette at home and Iowa on the road then you are looking at an unranked basketball team looking for answers.

They win Hawaii and beat Maquette and Iowa, then I think you have to ranked them #1 in the country.

My guess is they will end up somewhere in the middle.
What I don't like about losing the first game in Hawaii (which IMO is toss up) is we end up with 2 games that potentially suck.
Suck how? The worst team in the field is Colorado, who is 70th at KenPom. If we lose, we get Dayton most likely and then potentially Memphis. All of those are strong noncon matchups on a neutral court that we'd be favored in.

People get entirely too caught up in the conference logo patch on the front of the jersey...

This all lines up for maybe exactly what this team needs, win or lose.
