Yeah, this is the frustrating reality of it for me. This is not what this was supposed to be. They were supposed to be able to monetize there fame. This should have been things like Olivia Dunne being able to monetize her social media following as an influencer, or someone recognizable like Caitlyn Clark snagging a State Farm TV campaign deal.
This was never supposed to be hey fans, you need to pony up $150k next year to retain our free safety, because Missisppi State is going to offer them $200k+ and they may jump at it. That isn't name, image, and likeness. Most of these players aren't even recognizable to their own fanbase, let alone nationally. Their name and image is worth a fraction of what they are now receiving in "NIL".
Okay, so it’s mislabeled.
Calling it a salary doesn’t change anything
The days of free labor are over. The market is there for these players to make more than we can afford
Hopefully a salary cap helps some, but until there is employment and a collective bargaining agreement, shutting down NIL will be very difficult
My hope is that enough historical powers see that by making this a player salary spending race, they’ve marginalized their more exclusive advantages of history, location, etc
