do we really need another kid with 0 stars in this class? i mean, we have 2 of those already.

Didn't see the jimlad, so I'll quote as if you meant to ask with some sincerity. He moved last year. Recruiting sites lost track of him. As a result, no stars. IMO, Aka might be the best recruit in this class to date.

I (apparently) have a different opinion than most others here. I think Pierre Aka will be a future offensive guard. Darn near mirror image of Oni Omoile. Those would be two very athletic, quick guards that are mobile and can get downfield in a hurry.

I wouldn't mind this, but he is regarded as a defensive line type right now.

it was an implied jimlad. damn it now i had to give myself up. although i'm surprised that no one has posed that question for reals yet.

I just went back and re-watched Pierre's junior highlights and highlights from this years season opener, this guy needs to be in the offensive line. Very good at engaging and maintaining his block. (Pike has moved him from TE to RT this year.) Besides, DeShawn Dowdy (Iowa State's next commit) is better suited for the DL.

I disagree with this. I am not impressed with Aka's blocking. I'm just not seeing what you're seeing. In the one highlight video, I watched him run by a guy on two or three occasions who ended up making the tackle. This is without considering that we have no clue how he will look when he get's to campus. This kid could be 280 by then. He could also be 230. He could be much quicker.

i think this guy ends up on the Oline too. Aka has really good feet and once he is on a guy he's impressive. That may be the same reason he ends up at Dline too...who knows. What I do know is that we just got a very impressive jumbo athlete and those guys are hard to get. Great job by our staff. We will have to wait and see how the class shapes up. If we get another DT, best bet is Aka to the Oline. He really reminds me of a guy who plays TE for the Vikes...Jim Kleinsasser.

Dowdy is more of a DE prospect while Aka is more of a DT prospect. I'm thinking Dowdy is a TE unless we get Culkin though.

Thing to remember is Daniel Burton is regarded as a guard commit. I think we're taking 2 Oline commits this year (only losing 2 Olinemen). Aka would probably project to guard on offense, and I doubt we take 2 guards as our only line commits. However he could also be projected as a H-back/blocking TE that Hammerschmidt is.

A recent article, that I read, quoted Burton's high school coach as saying that he thought Burton would end up as a center (at the college level). Implication was that Burton is a very intelligent kid and that center may be the position to take advantage of his smarts.

I'm holding out hope that Culkin is the TE of this class...

heard we recruited this kis as a tight end... from the talk on here seems like he will be a d-lineman... awesome!!

The talk on here is by people who don't know what they're talking about.

To be absolutely fair though, I don't think the staff has a certain position in mind, but I believe they are leaning toward TE, possibly with an eye on OL somewhere down the line. Aka has said he likes defense, so that might play into where he eventually starts out. If he can cut the mustard there, he could stick.

I would just as soon see good athletes like that on the DL as I think we have an easier time recruiting OLs and TEs that we do DEs and DTs. If they can play defense, they should be on defense. I was disappointed to see Omoile move back to offense for that very reason. However, the staff gave him a shot and apparently found him lacking for the DL and moved him back. I'm OK with that as long as they gave him the shot to see how it went.

Bobby La Gesse broke the story saying Defensive lineman, that leads me to believe hes a Dlineman. We'll probably get an interview from him in a couple days, and figure it out then.

Iowa State just received a verbal commitment from Pike H.S. (Ind.) defensive lineman Pierre Aka

Re: Pierre Aka Commits! - nuclear engineering

Tripped across the following online. Perhaps Pierre's pass-catching outing didn't go super well? If not, maybe he IS headed for the DL at ISU.

Also, like rookie DEs Irving (6-7) and Lemke (6-4) and current DE commits Collin Bevins (6-5) and Mitchell Myers (6-4), 6-foot-4 Aka is proof of the pudding: A couple years ago during a weekly call-in show, CPR said the staff had a minimum height of 6-foot-3 for DE recruits.

(Do I recall correctly, Mitchell is tagged for the interior DL?)

Pierre Aka
6'4", 250 lbs.
Tight End
Indianapolis, Indiana

Aka does not currently have an offer from Michigan, but has been trying to get on campus for some time. He was supposed to make the trip up last weekend with teammate WR/QB Aloyis Gray but the plans fell through. He made the day trip up on Saturday with his coach and was well worth the wait.

"It was amazing. When we first got there we took the tour, met with the academic advisor, talked to the recruiting coordinator, then my position coach and Coach Hoke. That was the best part talking to the coaches. I actually built a relationship with them, which I haven't been able to do really with other schools."

Pierre would like to go into nuclear engineering so schools like Michigan and Stanford stand out to him. While he wasn't offered on this trip he did get a chance to talk to the coaches about what he needs to do to earn a scholarship to Michigan.

"They said they could offer at anytime, but they definitely will offer if I do good at the one day camp this summer. They all like me, but they just want to see me catch the ball. They said that they only send handwritten letters to certain guys and I'm on that list, they just want to see me in person."

His coach felt the visit was a success and also told Pierre that he thinks Michigan is a good place for a tight end. Aka currently has offers from Arkansas State, Ball State, Bowling Green, Miami (OH), Northern Illinois, Toledo, and WMU. His team essentially only uses their tight ends for blocking, so there's no film of him running routes or catching the ball. If he does well at summer camps he could see his offer list grow.

Right after he visited, Michigan got commitments from two other TEs and one is just about exactly like him. There was also another one close to committing. Even if they found he was worthy of an offer, I doubt they would have given him one.
