Simply put, pessimism is expecting the worst. Expecting that the team will win no more games is pessimism.
Negative is seeing only the worst in things. Seeing 9-9 in conference while ignoring 20 wins and the 7th trip to the NCAA's in 8 years is negativity.

Does that satisfy you?

That helps a bit. His post was specific to the trajectory and recent play of the team, which is most relevant to their potential success in Big 12 and NCAA tourneys. You think we should blindly expect future wins without taking anything else into consideration?

At this point I would say it's being realistic. The team lacks an identity on either end. Very inconsistent cohesiveness. They haven't demonstrated the details and little things that it takes to win games and beat good teams.

I hate to admit that and see my favorite team play so poorly. It's discouraging that the coaching hasn't been better, especially when it comes to protecting our proud home court.

Most of this, to me, also defines you as pessimistic.

I'm not going to blow sunshine up everyone's ass here, and I'm not "blindly" expecting future wins. I tend to hope for the best. I saw great improvement in the attitude on the court today, and it makes me hopeful for another win or two.

I could turn the tables on you and point out that Marty (and perhaps you) are blindly expecting future losses without taking anything else into consideration...

Aside from the improved attitude, which I would guess is only relevant to last week's debacle(?), what tangible on-court examples make you optimistic we can beat quality teams down the stretch? If you want to get back to the ways of 20 wins, what is this team going to differently?

Honestly want to know, maybe I am overlooking some things and I can become more hopeful for the next couple weeks?

All this offensive talent we have I feel is being underutilized. Defensive talent, well, we don't have much, so I think there should be more effort from Prohm to mix and match and throw curveballs at opponents. I also feel things such as playing hard, toughness, selflessness, leadership are "talents" that people overlook when assessing teams, and this group hasn't shown those.

Sorry, I'm not a basketball expert like some of you. I can't give you "specifics". If you want to grouse and complain and assume that they're dead in the water, I'm not going to change your mind with anything I say. You don't really want to hear anything positive, that's pretty clear. All I know is, this team has won more games than they've lost, and I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. With that, carry on with your complaining.

He also had Charlie Henry. That group of assistants (minus MA) were all pretty good X & O guys.

Maybe this would be a good thing for them to focus on with any offseason staffing adjustments then, given it seems to be Prohm's weak side. If things could improve even a little bit as far as some of the in-game choices that have been made... could be a big improvement.

I wasn't able to attend the game last night due to the crappy weather up "North". It was heart-breaking to hear that incident happened in our "own house". No loyal son, forever true fan would do such a disrespectful act.

Senior Night is a way to recognize the commitment, successes and contribution of each senior athlete. It should be an enjoyable evening for the players, coaches & parents.

Not that it would have mattered, but wondered if it would be possible to do the ceremonies before the game? The women tape their speeches & they are shown reading them on the video board/ highlight films. I really liked to hear the "live" speeches, but this works great while they are still recognized on the court. (The time frame is also controlled). They even had a video at halftime with the players' parents which was also pretty neat.

Enough rambling...just feel bad for Coach Prohm & the team. Not a good reflection of the Cyclone Way at Hilton on a night that was supposed to be special.

P.S. Hope the culprit drowned on the way to their car .

For the record, it was audible, but not loud. I wouldn't even say the guy yelled. It was more like speaking out loud when everything was really quiet. He didn't shout down Prohm. Rather, he just said it during a pause. At the time, I wondered if other people heard it because it wasn't very loud.

Why coach even mentioned the recent troubles is somewhat odd given that they are supposed to be honoring senior players. We all know about the struggles. Don’t need to bring it up in front of the home crowd. Lack of court awareness by Steve.

Are you kidding? I’ve made an extensive and consistent argument:

Steve Prohm has an extreme flaw in his coaching philosophy which gets greatly exposed when coaching against superior in game coaches. That flaw is that he is passive and slow to adjust.

He wants his players to figure it out on the floor by themselves (because he can’t figure it out for them in the huddle). He also runs an offense with little structure and complexity which is easily stifled by good coaching.

His typical timeout huddle speech of “we’ve got to be better” instead of coaching them towards an adjustment is comical.

This style works at a mid major, but in league full of good coaches like the Big 12, it gets abused.

So go ahead and tell me how dumb this is and how bad of a fan in am. I don’t care.
Sorry. Posted this in the 'flow' of the thread. But, now after reading the rest of the thread, the question of first hand knowledge of the huddle conversations was raised several times (without an answer).

In place I want to say a couple things about 'character'. A true person's character doesn't reveal itself after wins, but rather after losses. I figure when I stoop so low as to be unprofessional or disrespectful like that, that I've also lost the title of being a true 'fan'. And, accordingly, should remove myself from the masses of great fans! My bet is people like that have a small group of friends which try to build their own egos by belittling others.

Bare with me for a second. I'm going to thump my own chest as an example of how to transform teams. I've been on 7 teams in my life of my respective sport all the way to semi pro. Every single one of those teams I joined when they were in last place and left when they were in first. I'm certainly NOT what I would call a 'gifted' athlete. Instead, what I brought to the table was 'cohesiveness' and 'smarts'. Fans are no different. That's what makes Iowa State fans so good. The vast majority support 'respect' and 'decency'. This thread, though sprinkled with the nay sayers, in general shows the decency I'm touting.

Wasn’t sure if you were talking about Fred or Steve in this post? Might want to check Kenpom sometime too before you talk about our offense being “stifled”.

2 things:

While I agree with most the guy is a douche, anyone who laughed when he said it should be called out as well. I didn't hear the guy say it from where we were, but the wave of laughter was very audible.

Prohm seemed upset from the beginning since half the crowd left. I'm not calling people out for leaving, but Prohm didn't seem pleased with it.

Unfortunately you have to take the bad with the good if you're going to do it at the end of the game. If it looks like we're going to lose, some people are going to head to the exits early. Happens with every season, coach, etc. But otherwise, I agree with the sentiment.

I was at the game and left early. I assumed since they had a ceremony at beginning of game that was it. I probably wouldn’t have stayed any way since I had another commitment but it is possible people didn’t know about the after the game ceremony.

I think they announced it before the game was over. Can't remember if it was at the under 3 TO or later. Maybe they need to announce it sooner.
