Training based on your heart rate can address this concern. Muscle will be burned if you are under nourished. However, you can target fat by training in a specific Heart Rate zone.

Nothing will lose weight like starvation, but of course it is unsustainable. Don't think that to lose weight you have to lose muscle however. By varying your training and eating appropriately you can lose fat and gain muscle.

Now, for body building purposes, maybe not, as I think they bulk up and go lean consecutively. I have had success, however, gaining muscle and losing fat by using weight lifting and long low intensity cardio workouts. Eating appropriately after both.

My uncle was on this program where he ate an absurd diet. There is no way I could have done it because I do like food and plan to enjoy it from time to time but the interesting thing was the exercise. I believe it was an hour walking at something like 2 mph. He had great success with it.

That's a good point on the muscle mass thing. I honestly don't care if I lose a lb. I know that I will, but that's not what is important. My goal is 190, even though I don't know if I will be able to get there. I am a fairly decent framed guy. I feel like if I get dow to 200 on the current program I will look pretty good and be in good shape. Those were my goals. The numbers are kind of secondary I guess. I think my "ideal" weight is like 170 or something which isn't going to happen with the way I'm built.

There are just some people who can't get as ripped as others. You can see that in the Insanity videos. Look, those guys are all in phenomenal shape but some just are more defined than others. I don't know anything about the ROTC, but a guy was talking to me about having to make measurements and his kid was having a heck of a time making them because of his body type and the fact that he just can't rid of that extra 10 lbs or whatever. Maybe someone will correct me but I think there are just those people who can't get that last little bit off without going to extraordinary measures.

I have a question as well:

I have been tossing around the ideal of repeating the first month of Insanity before going to the second. I want to do this for two reasons: The first is that I'm not sure if I will be able to make that second month as effective because even though I have made huge strides, I still don't feel like I am ready to go more intense. The other is simply to turn it into a longer program and make that second month of the program really effective. Does anyone know if this is a terrible idea? I can't imagine it can hurt to just do more cardio.

There are different body types for sure, and you have to do what you can with what you have. Increasing muscle mass, decreasing body fat % I think are good goals. I know that I tried to get as thin as possible and to get below 160 while lifting weights was going to take loss of muscle. So my goal is to be 160ish and have healthy cholesterol levels. Really, it is so hard in the US to eat healthy as the vast majority of food is bad for you. Good luck to everyone trying to be healthy it is not easy and your efforts should be applauded.

CrossFit is kicking my ***...

Pay some money at one of our local weight loss programs (Kosama/Farrells/Max Life) and you'll feel guilty for not going.

unless farrell's has changed from their alternating days kick-boxing/bands system in the last year or so, I wouldn't count it as 'crossfit' style in that list.

I don't think it will hurt too much. One thing to keep in mind though, is that Insanity is designed so that the second month pushes you past any plateau you hit at the end of the first month. You may lose a little effeciency in that second run of the first month.

However, since the fit test alone kicked my *** I can understand why you wouldn't want to ramp up the intensity yet. :twitcy:

Anyone willing to share their fit test numbers? I don't have mine here at work or I would type them in.

I am in the 4th week of Insanity. I have taken the last week off due to a few vacations, but I still watch what I'm eating (but not drink. I have drank a ton of beer.). It's very good. Highly recommend. I only needed to lose about 15 lbs so it's not that big of deal for me. I lost 10 in the first 3 weeks and am noticeably thinner and more in shape. And like Tre said, they don't care if you take breaks. Hell, at this point, I go longer without a break than a few of the models on the DVD.

I do recommend you get in a little better shape before doing Insanity. It starts you off hard and you go hard 5 days a week (Sunday is rest day and then a small workout midweek that isn't AS hard). But if you want to see results quickly, Insanity is for you.

In order of difficulty for me so far:

1. Pure Cardio
2. Plyo circut
3. Strength
4. Recovery

I see some things happening though. Pure cardio is getting easier for me and strength is getting harder. It's really interesting to think back to the first time you did that workout. For me, I can tell by the amount of liquid I drink as an indicator of breaks. I don't take near as many now and if I do they are shorter. Going in I thought they would push you not to take them, but I was wrong.

I guess what I'm saying is that I think I will be better off pushing more in month one as opposed to not being able to do all of month two. Can someone tell me just how much more intense the second month is. It's not that I'm scared, I just want to get the most out of month 2.

I just did the second one last night. I increased pretty well in everything but globe jumps. I still increased but not by as much. I think I increased most in the switch kicks, which makes sense because I was probably burning out early on the first test. Push up jacks were much better too. I think I'm close to the starting points for the guy they used in the fit test in most categories which makes me feel really good.

Alright so it came in the mail and is staring my ominously in the face right now. I looked through the meal plan and am glad that it actually is very well organized and easy to follow (plus it makes sense).

Now I need to decide when to begin this. I'm thinking this coming monday would work, but I might start the meal plan tomorrow.

So, I'm overweight @ about 230 and want to get down to about 200 or less. I've been trying to find something that would help me get down to that. Just wondering what your experiences are with it and what not. Would you recommend it?

Dude it sucks...i hate it...its not a fun way to get in shape...find something you enjoy

Mason City. If you're in Ames, it happens basically every night at Lied.

If your serious about getting back into hoops, There are a few local games pretty much every day of the week. If you are not a college student and don't want to play at lied, there are many more options. PM me if you want more info on all the local games.

1. I disagree. I can honestly say I look forward to Insanity far more often than not.

2. Duh. That's why America is so fat (myself included). If it was generally "fun" to exercise we wouldn't have that issue.

No, but I watch what I eat and eat much less. I do what I call "three bad meals." I get three unhealthy meals/week. I use them any time. It keeps me from burning out I guess.

You are kind of right on this. if you make it a few months with insanity, and just monitor your diet, you will no doubt lose the 20 easy lbs to shed. Which I think is a great goal. get rid of those easy to lose lbs first, continue to live your new lifestyle. Continue to add more activity to your life. Basketball, running, volleyball, whatever you think is fun. It is a process. Think about how many years it took you to get completely out of shape. It will probably take that long to get truly back into shape. You will be surprised, when you live at 200 lbs for a while and you are doing more activity, not eating garbage, limiting soft drinks and alcohol, you will get down to 185. It just takes time, like years of a new lifestyle to shed the tough last 15 lbs. So please don't think you can't get to your ideal weight, that is just an excuse. you can, you just have to be patient, and willing to work your *** off.

My ideal weight is 175. 4 years ago I was 214 lbs. In one year I dropped it to 185. I was stuck there for what seemed like forever. I made a few subtle, yet some would say drastic changes to my diet and boom, the pounds started to shed, I am now at 174, the best shape I have been in since college, and I have just started the insanity asylum this week to try something fresh. You always have to be pushing yourself, or your just getting fat.

good luck

I "acquired" both P90X and Insanity over a year ago but have never tried either. I am not in bad shape and already work out 4-5 times per week, but I'd like to try one of these in order to get into summer shape a little faster before taking a few vacations (work off that beer gut).

My main concern has always been the people who live below me. Our upstairs neighbors are loud as hell and **** us off constantly. I'm afraid that if I did either program I would be that annoyance to the people under us. Would anyone recommend one program over the other, in terms of which has less jumping? Also, if you were to do either could you easily supplement other movements for jumps, or is jumping a pretty integral part to the workouts?

It's only 40 minutes a night let them deal with it.
