In other words, Iowa has forever lost about 60% of our native timber, which didn't amount to much to begin with. About half that loss was from 1850-1900, the rest since.

I'm making my attempt to help out. Planted 72 yearling trees I bought through the DNR this spring (planning on more next year). They were really affordable at the beginning of May, but it was a tiny window I had to get them into the ground.

I probably won't be able to enjoy them, but I'm hopeful my kids and their kids just might. Plus I need to do something to replace the 18 dead ash trees around my property.

That’s quite a sterile and naive take for PBS. Chief Seattle foretold Iowa perfectly.

My parents lost 2 100+ year old trees in the derecho and had no trees for a while. My dad planted 2 saplings (can't remember what kind) maybe 3 years ago and they're already probably 10-15 feet high. I had no idea trees grew so fast since all the trees in that neighborhood were ancient.

That’s a good one. Once upon a time I had the spatial version where you could break out the area of each individual subcategory with GIS software. Great and fascinating resource.
