Random question for y'all.
Is Christmas fun for you? I keep hearing people mutter about some menial problem and then follow it up with that tired cliche "and that's why I hate the holidays"
My work really sucks leading up to holidays, but I still enjoy them. Even if I'm hosting an event and it takes a ton of prep work, I still look forward to them.
I understand if a tragedy happened around that time and you associate it with the event. Otherwise, what gives?
I love Advent; the music, the scripture, the anticipation. I love the quiet peace of the Christmas eve service. Every year, we join a large group of friends from the church at one couple's annual open house party where we laugh, talk, share treats, eat chili, and sing Christmas carols until the wee hours...then driving home when it's oh so quiet in Ames, holding PapaLew's hand the whole way. Christmas morning, we sleep in, then build a fire & spend the day being lazy, watching White Christmas and A Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story. Sometimes we mix it up with Gremlins or Die Hard or other movies set at Christmas time. It's OUR day together.
I don't like the commercial aspect of it very much. I loved selecting gifts before it became competition, or nothing was good enough, or you spent more on him than you did on me. When that part became more chore than joy, we moved away from it...of course, that doesn't work well if you have small children still at home! I usually go down to Worldly Gifts on Main, and get small ornaments for my sisters. I have ornaments from them on my tree, Texas and Washington themed. Outside of pigs, there aren't a lot of ornaments indicative of this state, so I go international for them. Bonus: I'm helping indigenous people in less developed regions of the world.
