Re: Rashad Vaughn

I want to think that Vaughn is an independent thinker and has only agreed to extend his recruitment as "the payback to Kaffey" so that Kaffey has maximum amount of time to cultivate his own future. I still hoping that, come the Spring signing period, Vaughn will pick where he wants to go without regard to Kaffey's open options at that moment. I'm not criticizing Kaffey; I think he is doing what is best for himself without major damage to Vaughn's career but I cannot believe that Kaffey is not pursuing his own future as much or more than Vaughn's.

This is exactly what I am thinking. Kaffey looks to be looking out for himself and RV at the same time. Is he actually mentoring RV? Very likely, yes. Is he also riding RV's coat tails and looking for a better for himself at the same time? I'd say yes to that as well.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

The dreaded quasi agent. The leeches that attach themselves to these rising stars. These middle men do a lot for these kids and the kids then feel indebted. These handlers aren't in it for charity. They make an investment in these kids with the hope of a payday.

If Vaughn chooses to go to whomever offers his quasi agent the best offer then I think it will be between Kentucky, NC, KU, BU or UNLV. If Rashad makes the choice solely on his own then I think he will pick ISU. At this stage I would say the odds aren't in our favor.
.

See Ed Martin. It was no coincidence that when George Raveling was at Iowa, he buddied up to him. Look at all of the Michigan players he was able to bring in the next couple years

Just chatter. Vaughn is still coming here. If not, best of luck to him ISU will be fine.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

You plea guilty.......and then say it is "incorrect" to say it was a criminal conviction. Wow. What........you convicted yourself? This guy is shady. IMO...the Star has had this story for awhile and was waiting to see what RV would do. I imagine had he chose Minnesota this story would have found the shredder. Which if true.....makes the Star just as shady Kaffey. We are 8-0 right now with a bunch of new guys, none of which are 5 star one and done players. I am of the high opinion that when CFH recruits someone there are no package deals of this manner. You either want to come here....or you don't.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

I'm over worrying too much about Vaughn. If he comes here, that's great. If not, we'll land a juco shooting guard or transfer and still be in the mix for a huge year next season with the additions of Nader and McKay.

I agree with your premise. The reason he is so important, aside from what he can do on the floor for Iowa State, is the symbolism of signing a top 20 recruit.

Signing the first one makes signing the second one that much easier.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

If we for some reason don't end up landing Vaughn, I get the feeling more people are going to blame Kaffey than anything.

kaffey went with vaughn on his ov to ISU along with his mom and siblings.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

wtf:

"Kaffey, 27, pleaded guilty in 2004 to first-degree aggravated robbery. In the case, Kaffey and another man were charged with pulling up to a playground in Brooklyn Center in a purple Dodge and pistol-whipping one victim with the butt of a gun. A second victim, court records showed, was hit several times on the back of the head as he tried to put his infant into a car. According to the complaint, they took roughly $250 and a cellphone."

Or Cunningham?? I believe he is still on the table and considering us.

^ worst offense here might be having/ riding in a purple dodge.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

Yuck... I'm with everyone else that is sour on a "package deal." Sounds shady, but happens a lot. I remember Raef LaFrentz, and I'm pretty sure his dad (his coach at Monona/MFL) ended up on the staff in some capacity at KU while Raef was there... At least he didn't have to have anything expunged from his record. (Though if Kaffey is 27 now, he was 17 or 18 when he got in trouble.) Given the fact there's been nothing since who knows. RV can take care of Kaffey in another year when he goes to the NBA.

I think Fred is doing a great job blending talent with guys who get better every year under his system. There's no doubt he can handle a 1-year player (RW, etc), but I like the direction the program is headed. Experience together as a team is hard to beat. Blending new players in every year will always have growing pains. Look at KU, UK, and NC this year. The one-and-dones are undoubtedly talented, but they aren't as good of "teams" as some of the more experienced teams out there. Also, we have had the luxury for the most part to have had guys play on the scout team for a year before they actually put on ISU uniforms (Kane being the lone exception for a 1-year transfer, no?) If Fred lands a guy like Niang, or Morris, or Thomas every year, I think we'll be a power for a long time...

Rashad is good but kentucky or any of these schools isnt going to hire his handlerdirectly for a top 8-15 recruit. A booster might though at any one of these schools and while shady nothing illegal. This is how rules are broken these days. Basketball one player can change a dynamic so a booster hires a handler and pays them well. Just like the UNLV booster that pays kaffeys salary now and bought the 500k house that vaughn lives in and gave him a $45k "scholarship" to findley that includes incidentals to a school that doesnt exist. It's a home school that uses the grade school for accreditation purposes and testing but isnt a school independently and they have their "classes" in the house they live in. It is shady as all hell. If unlv wanted to funnell more money to vaughn the booster just gives kaffey a raise and kaffey as a non booster friend of vaugns that preceded employment can get a 10k gifts from kaffey without reporting and even more under the table. Maybe, weatherwax could hire kaffey as his handler that way he doesnt have to deal directly with Self ;)

That really isn't the type of guy that should be steering RV anywhere IMO.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

I think there are two sides to the issue of 'mentors' or handlers of elite recruits.

1.) the pressure and attention that comes with being an elite 15/16/17/18 year old basketball player and future NBA-er is immense. I don't think any of us can fathom it. They're being contacted at all hours every day by coaches, friends, family, fans of prospective colleges, wannabe agent-types and other hanger-oners of all types. Some of this is fine and generally positive support, and some of it is negative and generally bad ideas meant to steer a kid away from achieving his goals in the most straight forward way. These kids (again, teenagers who usually lack emotional maturity, and general life-experience) need SOMEONE to keep them on the straight and narrow, to guard them from negative influences, and handle the overwhelming attention that comes with recruitment so they can make grades, practice basketball, and be somewhat of a normal teenager.

2.) lots of people looking to hang-on, ride coattails, take money, etc.

Let's hope Vaughn's parents are good judges of character. I can't profess to know 1/10,000th of the stuff they know about Mr. Kaffey, and everything else surrounding RV.

Still really want Vaughn.

Where did I ever say anything about Kaffey being hired by anybody? I understand what you are saying, but an under the table exchange doesn't require anyone being hired.

Word is we have cooled a bit on him as of late and just focusing on Vaughn and 15' recruits. If not Vaughn a transfer. 14' class has one remaining recruit and spot.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

I'd love to get Vaughn, I really would, but if we have to hire Kaffey to get him I'd rather land Cunningham/some sort of transfer instead. We will be pretty good next season with or without him anyways.
