Re: Rashad Vaughn

I don't know of anyone actually suggesting any sort of package deal for RV and his coach. That said, I don't understand why any player would limit his options based on who would give a former coach a job (e.g. Whitehead). Seems weird to me, but maybe I'm selfish.

Seems weird to me as well, but I know a lot of players that are like this for some reason.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

Exactly what I read from this. Those quotes definitely don't make me more confident. Sounds like he wants to see Rashad going to the highest visibility program.

You guys are reading way too much into one article. If anything, the relationship Fred has built with Vaughn, his parents and Kaffey will only help our chances with him. You guys realize there's a reason why UNC and UK aren't really involved anymore, right?

Re: Rashad Vaughn

Seems weird to me as well, but I know a lot of players that are like this for some reason.

First, there seem to be people that are trying to get inside a recruits head when it comes to this (Kaffey) and Chris's blog last week (Cunningham). I don't know why everyone thinks they know what a recruit is thinking and why they think that a recruit would always be logical. Kids aren't always logical.

Now, on the Kaffey thing, I have no idea if he wants a job where Vaughn goes. But there are lots of possible situations. Kaffey could want a job and that could influence where he wants Vaughn to go. Or Kaffey could care less.

But I think there is a fairly good chance that Vaughn will make his own decision. The thing Vaughn has going for him is that he has parents that are very involved (i.e. the coaches making the trek up to Minneapolis to meet with them). It is unlikely that if Kaffey wants a job, that will be the only factor Vaughn considers.

And all of this is assuming that Kaffey wants to ride Vaughn's coattails. That's a pretty big assumption. He obviously followed Vaughn to Vegas, but if he wants to get a job on a BCS staff, working and Findley is probably a better way to get noticed. He could really be looking only out for Vaughn's best interest.

Iowa State had an in-home visit with Rashad Vaughn's family tonight in Minnesota, per a source.

Makes sense. Hoiberg tweeted a picture of himself with Flip Saunders earlier so we know he's up there.

I probably am reading too much into it (hopefully so). Perhaps in reality UNC isn't really involved anymore, but nothing from that interview suggests as much. That's been the word around here, but this is more or less an echo chamber. We may just be believing what we want to believe.

Well ya but that's only one side of the story though. Of course he's going to say UNC is still in it. You never know what's going to happen in the future and eliminate a school like that. Probably the same reason why you'll see Kentucky still on his list whenever he cuts that one down even though they're not really in it anymore..

Re: Rashad Vaughn

There have been rumblings that Kaffey would go where were Rashad goes. although that may be how the game is played I don't care for it. no likey.

There was a rumor going around that UNLV offered him a position next season, but if it is true, I could not say.

This isn't the first time a guy has tried to turn a relationship into a 200k coaching job.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

I would take it as a dig at UNC if it was switched around, and I think you should take it as a dig at Iowa State

Agree, but hell we know we are not a blue blood. I would feel better if UNLV was listed with us instead of Minnesota. I think Kafferty is hurting us and ma and pop helping our cause.

On a semi-related note was talking to a hawkeye fan and mother of two the other day. She said "it pains me to say it but I will encourage my kids to go to ISU, who wants their kids going to a party school". ISU always feels like a safe option for parents for the same reason pundits knock Ames, in this case it may play in our favor. That + Fred what mother wouldn't pick Iowa State.

Re: Rashad Vaughn

Pete Kaffey is obviously going to praise UNC a lot as he talks to a UNC Insider writer. He does the exact same whenever he talks to Travis Hines or anyone at Gopher Hole. Kaffey is going to say the right things to whoever the audience is because that's what you do. The last thing Kaffey can do is burn bridges with any schools because that could potentially make RV mad thus ending Kaffey's coat-tail riding. Coat-tail riding may be the wrong expression here but that's how I see it. What does RV need a mentor? Isn't that what parents are for?

His parents are in Minny while Rashad is in Vegas. If I sent my kid to Vegas, having an adult around to keep an eye on him/her doesn't sound like a bad idea. Kaffey could be a scumbag, a saint, or somewhere in between. We don't really know but I bet Fred has a good feel for it which is all that really matters.

Hate to be the bad guys here, but we can't have premium info on this board...I'll need to edit to only allow a couple sentences at the start. Thanks for understanding!

I completely agree that Fred's feel for the situation is really important. On the Vegas point, I agree there as well. At the same time, Kaffey was his mentor when he was in Minnesota too. But this whole mentor/entourage happens everywhere. The ESPN Broke 30 for 30 pointed that our. Andre Rison said he was paying for guys in his entourage and he didn't even know their name.
