I haven't been in this thread for a week or so but weren't we starting to come back up in Travis' interview?

A few recruiting gurus have been tweeting/writing that Stanford is in the drivers seat for Travis and will be tough to beat, fwiw.

Are we in trouble? I hate being the pessimist, but we've missed on a lot of guys as of late. The top 3 we have remaining (hopefuls anyway) are Macura, Johnson, and Vaughn. I've never felt too great about any of them. In the worst case scenario that we do not land even one of these players, how badly does that bode for CFH and the program?

Look, is there a chance we strike out this year? yes. But we already have the foundation now built. The only big contributor we lose will be Ejim. And if we do strike out you can bet your arse we would get a good juco or transfer or two instead.

Fred is swinging for the fences on HS players this year. I think he's realized that taking transfers like Clyburn, Nader, Babb et al, is a better route to go than taking HS players that may take 2-3 years before they can develop.

If we miss on all of our HS targets, that will suck, but we'll fill in with a Juco or two and then snag 1-2 transfers if that happens.

Someone on the other board posted that Juco bigs Ivan Uceda and Tyrone Haughton are visiting for the Iowa game.

Remember, that Doc Sadler has some pretty good ties to the juco market, and it will be easier for him to sell ISU than it was to get them to Lincoln a few years ago.

I think Fred has shown he can pull a rabbit out of the hat on the transfer market when needed. Not worried.

I agree. My only concern with our recruiting going forward is that we only have one coach with the ability to land HS players (Mann). Matt A has struck out so far in the HS market, but he has been involved with the jucos and transfers. Doc's ties are mostly jucos. Losing TJ hurt our recruiting, IMO. Hopefully Doc can make up for that with his juco ties.

I really don't care where our players come from as long as they win. If you look at some of our best teams/players in recent history, we've been pretty unconventional in regards to recruiting and that will likely continue.

I think this is exactly his strategy. Go big or go home for high school recruits. If you miss, fill in the team with JUCOs or transfers. To me, it makes a lot of sense. While I think Sadler will do some high school recruiting, I imagine a large portion of his recruiting will be getting JUCOs for positions we miss with high school recruits.

Stepping back a little, if we can grab two great high school recruits a year, we will be in great shape. I can't say I wouldn't be disappointed with this year's recruiting class if it was Custer (great recruit) and two JUCOs/transfers, but honestly, we'll have a talented team for 2014/2015 already.

I like the strategy and think it will continue to pay huge dividends for us.

I am confident Fred will land at least one of our top targets. The guys we're after are going to take a little more time to reel in that's just how it goes.

Does anyone know if we have any targets coming to the game today? I knew we had a couple that were expected too

I think Fred may be making headway with Macura.

@DarrenWolfson: ISU still hopeful to have him Sept. 14. RT @GophersNow JP Macura said if he used his last 2 officials they would be to #Gophers & Iowa St.

Article from Gopher hole about Macura, I am confused on why he would be leaning on taking an offical to ISU but not sure if he is going to visit Ames. He has already been on Campus and seen the facilities so I guess there isn't much of a need for an official still seems odd.
He does mention early playing time avaliable at "Creighton and Xavier said that and Minnesota, if I work hard. It is just going to be a hard decision because I think that I can come in and play right away at all those schools."
That could end up being the final factor, I think playing time at ISU would be tough early.

Gopher Hole: Are you still going to visit Iowa State?

J.P. Macura: I haven’t totally decided that yet.

Gopher Hole: I saw a story where your dad was quoted as saying you might commit fairly soon. Is that the case?

J.P. Macura: Possibly. Maybe in the next few weeks, but I still have to talk to my dad about possibly an official at Minnesota and Iowa State.

Gopher Hole: You told me recently that you had five schools that you were looking at. Minnesota, Creighton, Purdue, Xavier and Iowa State. Is it still those schools or have you narrowed it down even further from that?

J.P. Macura: It is the same schools right now.

Gopher Hole: Do you have any other visits planned besides maybe Minnesota and Iowa State?

J.P. Macura: That is pretty much it. It is kind of coming to an end.

If early playing time is a big consideration, and he thinks that will be hard to come by (if I read that correctly) at ISU, AND he's possibly not going to take an official here, I would say it's not looking good for us with him.

Fred likes to play everyone in non conference and try combos out. He will have playing time.

Ironically, RV may well represent out best shot at landing a HS commit. Maybe through Cunningham and Johnson in there. If we strike out on all of them, we'll hit the transfer and juco market hard.

It will be this type of thing that will eventually frustrate Hoiberg into moving to the NBA. I feel like if Fred can't recruit HS players to Ames, you can probably count on one hand how many coaches are out there that could.

Fortunately, we've developed a reputation as Transfer U. It looks like we're going to need to keep going back to that well.
