Which is a major, major miss by he staff, and very disappointing if that's the case. There is no reason next year should be a "rebuilding" year. If it is, it's because the staff failed at filling the class appropriately. And yes that does take into account we have 3 very good freshman in the fold already.
Don't even think about the wonderful class balance that Freddy left Prohm with.

Definitely 2018 is an important year.

I do hope we can grab two grad transfers that will help us next year though. I think it would be important for the younger guys to get a taste of winning and playing relevant ball in March.

I'm not going to assume we have a Sweet 16 caliber team, but if we can just sneak into the tourney, it could really pay dividends for Lard, Lewis, McNeill, and Wigginton the following year.

I also think team chemistry will be really important this year with so many young guys. We lost a lot of leadership. DJ and NWB need to step up. CSP will have to handle this team differently than the last two years. If we get grad transfers, they really need to be high character guys.

I was as psyched as anyone about landing Juiston and a big time grad transfer wing.

Before anyone jumps on the Prohm failed wagon I think you have to consider the wing we recruited needed to be better than the guys we already have. NWB will most likely start the season as our three but Lewis at some point is going to take over. Currently we're looking at McNeill or Long as the second guard off the bench. That may not be terrible.

As for Juiston... Yep would of been a great fit. Just didn't happen. Sounds like Beverly is ours if we want him. No he isn't a difference maker but he's a different look that will compliment our future stars.

It's comedy how some people think recruiting is like making a bologna sandwich. Recruiting is different than 5-10 years ago.

The staff needs to stay resilient and my guess is this staff is just fine and not sitting around ******** and moaning about not landing Juiston. They have to have a short memory and know they did all they could to land him.

But to sit on here and kill Prohm and staff is just plain ignorant.

Ok. If that makes you feel better, go with it. I'm a realist. You can go on living in dreamland where Beverly was our top option all along.

No, it's that you can't wait for things to go wrong so you can complain. Jesus, how miserable your wife and children must be

The reason we are having trouble landing these recruits this time of year is because our #1 recruiting tool (and it's not even close) is currently sitting empty. Kids can hear about hilton all they want but until they see a game there they don't understand. Not being able to use hilton as a tool during this period is a major disadvantage.

I don't necessarily disagree, but I think McNeill/Young/Wigginton/ and Lewis all committed before ever attending a game in Hilton.

Haven't "ruled him out" but I do think Brown is a strong Zags or Oregon lean. Iowa State landing him is not out of the question but would certainly be an upset.
Unfortunately it looks like that could be the case. It's getting late, but hopefully they can pull in some immediate help.

It's tough, but that doesn't change that's what needed if we're to be a consistent program. We'll almost always have holes to fill for the upcoming year.
if we don't get some contributors this spring, we will not have a very good year next year. Think Oklahoma this year. Some very talented freshman ( not Kentucky good ) and a few upper class contributors - equals a poor season. Not down on Prohm, but this spring is key for next years success. Not looking too sweet at the moment.

as mentioned our best selling point is the fans and hilton, which of course is empty for spring recruiting. If you are not from central Iowa or Ames, it comes off as some town in the middle of corn fields. And likely the part of Ames they see is just highway 30 and then the campus area plus Sukup. We like it, it's nice but it may not have the appeal of the awesome facilities at Oregon, the glitz of Vegas or the scenic beauty of Spokane. A lot of kids may feel more comfortable at urban areas like Memphis or Milwaukee or Cincinnati. Wasn't Sukup done on the cheap? I had a donor told me it is adequate, but a lot of schools may have nicer basketball practice facilities. So in the context of spring recruiting, this spring was a critical one.

We still need a really good JC or sit out transfer. Lets not forget the NCAAs in 2018 is Des Moines, Kansas City for the regionals, and Mpls. for the final four. That is a dream, a once in a lifetime opportunity for a fans. Our hope was to build a team with the potential to get that opportunity.

We signed one of our best high school classes ever and one potentially good sit out transfer, people need to quit ******** about what we've missed on and be happy for what we got.

I can be ecstatic about the HS class we've signed and still be disappointed that we've missed on almost every transfer we've targeted.

I see us more as TCU was this year. 2017 may be a step back for us, but we have some really good young talent that given playing time should be really good in 2018 and beyond.

A rebuilding year it is. Not my preference, but we were due for one anyways, and the trajectory of the program is up and its overall health is still good. I will take that right now.

That was supposed to be last year until Morris and Mitrou-Long returned, for that matter.

Missing on Malou last year still hurts. He would have been the starting five for most/all of the season and would likely pair with Solomon in the post this year. Eh, this kind of thing happens.

Prohm got Shayok, had Malou until circumstances went awry, and almost had Juiston until UNLV got its checkbook out. I figured that, plus his remaining scholarships and proof that he can land some high-quality freshman players, removes (most) of the doubt in my mind right now.

Then again, not hitting on one impact big man recruit has stung the program. It would be nice to have Stokes or even Feazell or something like that right now to add some depth.

I was just thinking through our roster right now. We could play this next year...

Wigginton
Jackson
Weiler-Babb
Lewis
Young
---
McNeill
Long
Lard

...and probably not be all that great. However, if all goes well,* it could be...

Wigginton
Shayok
Lewis
Thompson
Young
---
Green
Weiler-Babb
Lard

...the year after that, where several starters might not even start again, or we might even be bringing guys who could be big-time contributors into bench roles instead.

*assuming we land Race Thompson and A.J. Green, which 247 has as "warm"

Just looking at the roster going forward -- that 2018-2019 team that I have sketched out there looks pretty good. I hope that would redeem the program pretty quickly. It might lack some shooting, but it would be big and mean on defense in a way we have not in awhile.

"Missing on Malou" might not be the most appropriate way to phrase that.

I wouldn't pencil Race Thompson as a starter. He doesn't appear to be that level of recruit and also they could land Morrow.
