Referee Tom O'Neill Again!!!

This wasn't the first mistake by Tom O'Neill in an Iowa State vs. Kansas game in which Iowa State lost in overtime. February 21, 2004 game at Kansas. Jared Homan was at the free throw line to shoot TWO free throws, but after the first a Kansas player grabbed the rebound and started a fast break. The ISU players paused, especially Jared who was holding up two fingers and yelling that he didn't get to shoot his second free throw. Kansas ran down and shot a 3-pointer while ISU was in a daze. Wayne Morgan vehemently protested and they were awarded a second free throw, but the 3 points for Kansas remained. Kansas went on to beat ISU in overtime. Tom O'Neill should not be allowed to referee anymore ISU games.
Wayne should have pulled his team off of the floor until it was made right. No one would have critisized home for a forfeit. It actually would have benefited him.

I would've loved to see it, but the media would've called him out. Hell, if Iowa State and Kansas reversed rolls in the two O'Neill occurrences, ESPN would've done a flashback to show how Kansas has been robbed twice now against ISU.

It was correct by the rulebook.

Screw job still, but the refs ruled correctly per the rulebook however impossible that seems.

I don't care if he refs another ISU game, but he definitely shouldn't ref a KU game again.

KU doesn't need him for the balance of the regular season now that they have their tainted conference championship all but wrapped up. Next year - now he might have to make sure that he gets KU the standard favorable treatment earlier in the game so he doesn't call so much attention to what's happening. That way he can whistle some bogus makeup calls after the game is in hand.

He will even likely make more calls in Iowa State's favor when they play a bottom feeder. That would be consistent with his track record this year. He has worked 18 games this year involving at least one top 25 team. Only one lower ranked team has managed to pull off an upset in those 18 games. Compare this to Mark Whitehead - the only ref from Monday night who appeared to call a competent game. Whitehead has worked 24 top 25 games with 9 ending up with an upset winner. When you factor in parity, home court advantage, hot & cold shooting, etc, Whitehead's game results seem a lot closer to normal expected results than do O'Neill's.

Even last year when O'Neill was awarded the Naismith award as the top men's college official (hard to believe, but true), there were 8 upsets in his 21 top 25 games. It raises the question if he is calling games differently this year or if the sample size is too small to draw valid conclusions. What is clear is that he kicked some key calls when the spotlight was shining bright.

How he responds to an embarrassing situation will be a factor in how much credibility that he can rebuild. If he either pretends that nothing happened or hides behind some lame excuses, he might as well hang it up and retire to polishing up his Naismith award. If he follows the lead of Jim Joyce when he screwed up the Tigers perfect game, he can begin to rebuild his reputation.

I guess that the moral of the story is that if someone misses the first of a two shot foul... take the ball to the other end of the court and dunk the damn thing!

I'm glad you brought this up because whatever it is, I don't think O'Neill et al. were purposefully trying to give Kansas the win on Monday. Why would they when they know the spotlight is on them, like you said? Now they're out of a few more reffing jobs next year, and deservedly so.

Maybe O'Neill skewed the calls subconsciously, but not on purpose. C'mon, the Big 12 didn't hand down orders to try to give KU a better seed and Bill Self isn't paying the refs (maybe playing them, but I digress)... this tin foil hattery that some have displayed here is really what makes us look bad, IMO. No one is giving praise to the racist jerks on Twitter, I've only seen a few give the students throwing stuff at the KU players a thumbs up, but mention something about how the refs have the fix on for KU/against ISU and the "preach it!" replies pile on. Yeah, ISU has had games where they've been screwed by the refs, some by O'Neill particularly (hence this topic), but to say it's a conspiracy is where a lot of people on here lose me. There are too many wacky counterexamples (TCU???), anyway.

And before you hit that reply button, I reiterate: Now they're out of a few more reffing jobs next year, and deservedly so. If O'Neill can't keep up on at crunchtime on Big Monday for whatever reason, he should be done, period.

It's a small sample size IMO, but your post is full of great information. Rep to you.

Ah ... KXNO just revealed these officials haven't missed a beat officiating over the past several days ... They are making big cabbage. Huge "punishment" factor ... Lots of laughs. Next year ... These contractors will not miss a beat with other games.

Also, you ignore how officials have a measureable propensity to favor golden pheasants during crunch time. Maybe officials need to be trained differently?

This gif is about the only thing that makes me feel better about that game. The OU game can't come soon enough.

There is no stronger "good old boys network" than in the officiating area. I never expected anything significant to happen.

I like your boldness, but just a heads up...this is probably going to get you labeled as a "misguided contrarian"...

Yep, there was never crooked refs in the nba either. To me it's naive to think with the amountt of money involved in college athletics today that there is something going on to fix games.

I can handle it, at least I'm not the only one. I mean, why bother paying for season tickets and/or cable to watch basketball if you really believe the game is so rigged? I do believe the Blue Bloods get a few more calls to go their way over a season, much like superstars in the NBA do, but I think that's more of an unconscious thing. (For example, when you're 50/50 on a decision, do you go with the advice of someone with more or less reputation?) That's also not to say there isn't some sort of "Good Ol' Boys" network in place that keeps bad/slow/old/"unconsciously biased" refs in place (I do have a beef with NCAA about this given the money they make and could put towards solving the problem), but there are too many referees involved in college basketball for there not to be a whistleblower on the outright fixing of games.

I am pretty sure the punishment was actually that they just aren't going to be officiating another Iowa State game this season... Or at least they weren't coming to hilton again.
