LOL at the same people who want JP to come up with millions to buy out the football coach's contact for being upset that there is limited funds for other priorities.

JP has always tried to run the AD on the cheap. Mostly because we demand that he do it that way. We are the second largest school by enrollment in the conference, and have the second smallest athletics budget. That's ****ed up.

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

I think Fred didn't want to be the bad guy and leaked this out.
I think it's totally true about JP not wanting to spend extra money.
I think the JP being jealous of Fred is false.
I think Fred going to the NBA was an inevitability and this isn't what pushed him out the door. But those in Fred's camp want fans to think it is.

Again, let's not kid ourselves that Fred didn't want this out there. Those types of sources don't talk unless Fred is ok with it. And if it is true, that's a good thing.

But fred is hurting Iowa state basketball with this. He probably should have waited until prohm failed to air his dirty laundry.

What types of sources are you referring to? That's the problem, we don't know who did the talking. I don't think Carol Hoiberg is out there quoting "it's bushe league, man" about the hotel deal.

Id agree that it was probably an inevitability. But many thought he had some boxes to check off here before doing that. Maybe this relationship just changed his timeline

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Pollard has a problem, no doubt. There are, however, also people who have some denial issues around Fred. I would bet that the hotel room thing is more normal than not and Fred perhaps expected more coming from an NBA environment. The other thing that kind of rubbed me the wrong way is that Fred demanded a salary which was completely fine with me, he interviewed with UM which is completely fine, but when it was suggested that maybe upping ticket prices was hitched to his contract somehow, he didn't like that. He wanted to leverage ISU (which is exactly what he did) but he didn't want the fanbase to think he was the type of guy to do that. I don't blame him for doing any of those things but don't get upset when people realize they have to pay more for their tickets so you don't go to Minnesota. It's not like the fans cared about paying more for that reason anyway.

Good post, I have a hard time believing this was all one-way.

There was a post in a long-ago thread about program spending in the conference. My recollection is we saw giant increase in revenues through the several+ years but did NOT see a commensurate increase in program spending. We HAVE to spend some money and I would hope JP would err on spending a little MORE than he was comfortable spending rather than less...

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

I can appreciate what Pollard has accomplished, but I've never loved the guy like some on here. Hines wouldn't write that article if he couldn't back it up... It's only going to make his job harder. And frankly, I'm not shocked as it is pretty clear that JP is a tightwad regarding the athletic budget. Can't argue with the results as it's paid for a lot of facility upgrades. For everyone that wants CPR out, be very careful what you wish for... With all that will be due on CPR's contract, I expect a very conservative and cheap hire... We're not getting the next Brian Kelly, Art Briles or Jim Harbough with what Jamie is going to be willing to pay. And if we get lucky, and he strikes gold, we'll have zero chance of retaining a successful coach when you compound penny-pinching on top of all the other problems ISU has (geography, history, etc).

If thats how Pollard treats back to back B12 tourney champs, imagine the crappy motel our football team has to stay at.

Hey, there is nothing wrong with Days INN!! Their contenintal breakfast has really good "day old" danishes.

Great piece by Hines. Have to think the announcement of Hines moving to a larger out-of-state market is only weeks away (if that). Easily the best sportswriter in Iowa right now.

I would like to see Pollard respond to this before jumping on the "Fire JP" bandwagon but it certainly is concerning. I don't think for a second that Fred stays if the team gets all the hotel rooms it wants and every coach brings their whole family to each game, though.

iirc Jaime does indeed spend all of the money the Athletic Department makes. Were he to increase spending on the bball program it would take money from somewhere else. Who's to say his decisions were out of line?

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

It isn't "room" it is "14 rooms and a suite in Hawaii during prime winter travel season". Yeah, I don't have a problem with the AD not spending $10k+ when the team had an afternoon flight. Hell, Hines intentionally didn't say how long they were there after checkout. For all we know it was just 1-2 hours. At most it was 5-6. And the team could have done something in that time, they were tired/hungover so they chose to sleep. As I posted upthread, maybe in the NBA keeping a day room is normal. But it isn't anywhere else.

This, exactly, is when my bull**** radar went off. It wouldn't be hard to know exactly how long they were in the lobby, but instead we're implied that it was hours upon hours. Sensationalist writing, methinks.

I think Fred didn't want to be the bad guy and leaked this out. Why, what does that benefit Fred? Don't think he is that petty.
I think it's totally true about JP not wanting to spend extra money. Part of the reason JP has that extra money is because of Fred, so maybe take care of him?
I think the JP being jealous of Fred is false. Why would he not be jealous, I was jealous of him and never spoke with him. Fred was the rock star of the school. JP was the accountant in the corner that didn't get credit for a record year, the sales guy gets the love.
I think Fred going to the NBA was an inevitability and this isn't what pushed him out the door. But those in Fred's camp want fans to think it is. Maybe but you never know, if JP was being a jerk maybe it sped it up

Re: Travis Hines: A look into the ISU BBall program and the Athletic Dept

Very interesting read.

Seems like a lot of sources confirmed some of this info...I hope JP treats all coaches/programs appropriately/fairly (not playing favorites), but also hope he doesn't nickel and dime...and didn't work with Fred and his staff when requests were not out of line.
"nearly double-digit sources"
this really bugged me. Why not say "nine sources". Otherwise good work out if Hines exposing JP. Pretty effed up that he and other AD families flew for free to San Antonio but the actual BB staff's family didnt? Wtf.

Exactly why donors are ****** and talking. Some don't want to get rid of CPR only because they know the next guy will have zero experience and be a bargain basement scrub to save money.

I think this means Travis got another job and has been sitting on this story until it didn't matter.
