There is nothing from stopping a car dealership in Ames or Des Moines from doing the same for ISU, either.

And there absolutely IS a risk. Every business ultimately has to balance advertising dollars spent with revenue generated by said advertising dollars. They aren't just piggy banks with unlimited resources.

This conversation got me to research what the actual NIL policy is at KU and I found this: https://kuathletics.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Official-KAI-NIL-Policy.pdf

It's an interesting read as to what is and is not permitted. I assume that Iowa State has a similar policy but I haven't been able to find it yet.

Oh silly boy. I know first hand of many businesses that would spend profits at the end of a year in order to not pay taxes.

Example - Owner of car dealership and huge local university bb fan is showing $200,000 profit. He hates paying taxes so he decides to sign a NIL deal with a university athlete to have the athlete "advertise" his dealership because he'd rather that money go to keeping his favorite sports team good than give the government more tax money.

I get calls about "what can I buy so I don't have to pay taxes this year" from probably 75% of my business clients every December.

The next big thing with NIL's is someone(the payer) will tell somebody(the payee) they need to throw a game. It will happen! That's the best way to get your money back quickly. And the payer bets on the game and wins and gets his money back. And the payer looks like a big spender when it really costs him nothing. I guarantee you this will happen! And it won't take long before it does. And you've ruined a kid's career and life.

Why would this scenario have anything to do with NIL deals? It doesn't take a NIL deal for someone to try to bribe a player to throw a game

And why couldn't it have happened previously, with players getting paid under the table?

It's this kind of ridiculous Boogeyman-ing that makes you look like a clown.

What? Fixing games has already happened long before NIL.

If your NIL money is coming directly from the person who tells you to throw a game, you will throw a game. Or he will tell you maybe you won't get paid. It's easier than under the table money. We let more bad people into the picture legally. You're just to ignorant to ignore reality.

Very true. But there is some difference to having money offered to you to fix a game versus having money you are accustomed to getting being taken away if you don't fix a game. I know it is a small difference but if a kid is supporting family with that money it might be significant.

Huh? How does one player "throw a game?" One player can't "guarantee" any outcome.
No one's going to pay big $$$ to anyone where there isn't a final result assured. You'd have to have both teams of players, coaches, officials involved too.

JFC no sh*t. The point that I inferred which I guess I have to be explicit about for your dumb a$$ is that the pockets of KU boosters in KC and UT boosters in Austin are much deeper than the ISU ones in Des Moines.

Now that we've got the obvious out of the way...

You're yet another person who doesn't seem to get that these business will ABSOLUTELY become piggy banks pumped full of booster cash. There are no advertising dollars, there IS NO ROI risk. Show me where a Kansas City Cadillac dealer can't sell a $100k Cadillac for $5MM? Keep in mind, the slush isn't going to buy cocaine or heroin...it's going into their LEGITMATE advertising budget. And they are under no obligation to use the NIL they pay for out of that budget.

Why are we bashing someone who can make money while also getting an education? Or pushing out his personal risk of potentially being an NBA bust?
I wasn't, but Vitale shouldn't bash the transfer portal for guys trying to find a better fit, playing time, as if it is the only problem.

Not an awful point, but are we pretending that college sports will be more corrupt than they've already been?

If the kid needs the money to support their family it probably won’t feel different to them, you fix the game or you don’t get paid.

Tomorrow is pay day. I’m gonna flop in a meeting and ruin it. Hopefully I still get my paycheck.

I have always asked farmers ( or others but I see more farmers) if they really needed to trade equipment or if it was for tax reasons. If taxes, I’d ask if they understood that 60% of that is still coming out of their cash.
