Watched it over the weekend and really enjoyed it, even knowing it's only the 1st half of the original 80s flick.

I did chuckle because it appears they raided DCU, MCU and Star Wars for all the actors. Aquaman, Thanos, Polka Dot dude (Suicide Squad) and Poe. Did I forget one?
Zendaya (Chani) plays MJ in the MCU Spider Man movies. Dave Bautista (Rabban) plays Drax.

40 mil for domestic opening weekend (Despite HBOMax simultaneous release). 200 mil worldwide.

I hope that's enough for part 2 to be made. I think it's all but confirmed based on what the actors are saying in interviews.

Sucks we have to wait until 2023 most likely for part 2

Yeah, it would be a big slap in the face to fans and movie goers if the film didn't get green lighted for the second half. It would have been nice if they Lord of the Rings it, but movie production companies now a days are conservative in their investments in what movies to make.

Per the google, it cost $160-170m to make. So I think the second one gets made. Also reflecting on watching it last night on HBOMax, it is very rewatchable, which is huge for the streaming service.

I thought it was really good! Visuals were amazing, scope was enormous, acting was great and they stuck pretty faithfully to the book. I thought the cut off was a little strange but I'm not sure there was a great spot to stop and prep for number 2.

I was reading that the second has not even been greenlit but having seen the financials from both domestic and international releases, I have to think it is just a matter or time before it is announced.

Can't wait honestly, as slow as the first 100 pages of that book were, the final 100 were really fun and engaging.

I'm a huge fan of the book and find the political discourse to be the most intriguing part of it.
I think it's more the fear of the book not living up to the hype. After seeing the movie and hearing the movie was a pretty direct adaptation, I'm down for checking the books out.

I have a hardcover copy of the book from the 60s. Not an original but a book club edition. Suffice to say I am a fan. They knocked it out of the park.

I do feel like it borrows just slightly from some 84 Lynch version visuals, more than the jodirowsky sketches…it kind of validates the 84 film in some ways while also surpassing it. (As long as they get to finish it with part 2)

only criticism is the music isn’t quite as memorable. The 84 score could be cheesy at times with the guitar but the orchestral version of it is incredible like Lawrence of Arabia level.

I wonder if viewers will realize this book predicted the existential threats of AI way back in the 60s.

They have advanced machines, not computers.

I always bring this up when talking about Dune. Eerie especially now with how polarizing or toxic some aspects of computer capabilities can be for society.

I’m always trying to get my wife to watch sci fi and fantasy and Harry Potter, LotR and the Matrix are they only three she has ever really embraced (didn’t even like GoT).

I grew up reading LotR and Dune. When we watch Harry Potter she will sometimes laugh at how obvious some of it is stolen from LotR and I’ll just tell her that nearly all fantasy borrows from LotR.

‘84 Dune and the book don’t use the phrase “the one” as much as this new film, but the new film really makes it obvious how the Matrix paralleled Dune. I think Dune is an original sci fi masterpiece but I think in a lot of ways stuff like Asimov, Heinlein, pulp/comic, Bradbury, Arthur C clark and even classic Star Trek is more influential to the entire genre. The Matrix pretty obviously is in the sphere of dune and I somehow didn’t connect it so directly before.

I think my buddy said this is available in imax too, but I honestly have no idea where the nearest imax is.

Im blessed with amazing theater options but I couldn’t resist watching for free first night on Max.

I might still go. I saw Fury Road at the Chinese theater imax main screen and it was probably the best movie theater experience of my life in terms of AV amazement . Hope to bring a friend who it is totally new for.

This is what I was wondering. I have not seen the old movie. I have always considered reading the book so I know the premise but haven’t gotten around to reading it. I wonder if I should read it first or watch it. Takes me forever to read a book, so I’m thinking I know enough of the premise to go right into the movie.
In fairness, it's a very long book. That said, when I read it I can't put it down, so I finish it in a couple of days.

Agreed, if it is your first time reading and it intrigues you, it's very hard to put the book down once it really gets going. Finished it in 4 days my first time through, although my internal clock was not happy with my sleeping pattern those days haha.

Agree, the music is a big part of why I can still enjoy the 84 movie. The rest of the movie had lots of problems. The main titles theme is great and finds it's way into each of the various battle themes. Take My Hand (the end credits song) is also quite memorable..

Dune - one of my favorite books
Dune Messiah - alright, I'm hanging
Children of Dune - Entering WTF zone
God Emperor of Dune - Didn't finish and just went fully weird

Thanks for this.
I started a few pages into Messiah and felt like that was enough for now, and maybe worth coming back to. I wondered if the series did that thing series usually do and stretched on too long. This sounds like it did.

Honestly it just changed. Some people loved it, some people didn't, and that's okay. It really changed to Herbert's political and philosophical treatises and that's not what I'm into Dune for.
