Really glad they are making a second movie. I really liked it when I watched it last night but it definitely felt unfinished.

Being familiar with the book I was pretty shocked at just how open ended they left it. They could have gone even one step further and had a pretty cinematic moment to end but instead I feel they really did end it just about halfway through the story.

It'll make the next movie even more awesome, but if that's all we got it would have been kind of tragic.

Put your hand in the box ...

Chalamet gave a great performance but I do prefer Agent Cooper yelling "THE PAAAAAAIN" and the vision of his hand burning.

The witches were done amazingly well in both versions.

Everything about the emperor and his Sardaukar warriors was waaaaaaaaaaaay better in this version. In 84 Dune the Harkonen and Atreides look so evil/majestic and then it's like...this goofy emperor guy is in charge of the rest????

The Fremen and stillsuits actually look pretty identical in both films.

Better to rewatch the old version before the new version? Or just watch the new one? It's been 20+ years since I've seen the old one.

Now that the sequel has been approved I wouldn't watch original or read the book until you watch both of these movies (then if you want to geek out, geek out).

I'm a bit of a Dune nut and I did rewatch the 84 movie a few months ago. For people bagging on the original and championing this new one...I think the new movie actually strongly validates the old one in lots of ways. It takes waaaaaaay more visual queues from 84 movie than the Jodorowsky production sketches. The costume and set design of the original Dune are among the greatest in cinema history, there is some good stuff. Some people hate Lynch's weird horror-inspired additions but really that's like less than 5% of the original movie. Real weakness of the original was the story was just too long for one good movie.

I love the Jodorowsky's Dune documentary (as a creative professional I have been there with cancelled projects), but it has created a bit of a bashing subculture against the Lynch movie when I think that movie had actually been growing in cult status for quite a while. IMHO 84 Dune was a bomb because they pushed it as the next Star Wars and it's nothing like Star Wars, not that they completely destroyed the subject matter, had bad acting, or bad film making skills.

It's interesting that there hasn't been much comparison to the miniseries that was on Sci-Fi 20+ years ago.

I wasn't able to watch it when it came out (and I can't seem to find it streaming anywhere) but it never seems to be part of the discussion.

I would not enjoy it is as much if my wife went with me so not even going to attempt it. It would be like taking her to a strip club.

Strange question that I am sure has a logical answer that I just overlooked. But why don't Jessica and Paul use that freakish voice ALL THE TIME? Seems like I would haha.
It's a closely guarded secret that the Bene Gesserit witches have that much power over people. Much of the Bene Gesserit order is secretive: religious seeding, breeding program (for the one), the voice, and other things that will appear in part 2.

imho it’s ok but overrated, new and 84 both bring more. New films will make it obsolete with 5+ hour run time.

I wonder if I can get one of these on amazon and leave it on my desk at work. Fun to ask a co-worker to put their hand in there.

There were some great real time strategy video games based on Dune in late 90s and early 00s. I'm pretty sure they were from same team that went on to do Command & Conquer games.

It's the perfect plot for that kind of game, you're trying to harvest something valuable while getting attacked by enemy forces and giant worms.

That’s were most of my knowledge is Dube comes from. Dune 2000. It was developed by Westwood Studios who created the command and conquer games.

Yeah I had the Genesis version which was great and preceded it by a few years, didn't have a PC at the time but I imagine the PC versions were even better.

Just got back from IMAX. Definitely enjoyed it, but my mind wasn’t BLOWN or anything. Will definitely need a rewatch with subtitles. I would describe it as Game of Thrones in outer space. It’s not for everyone. If you’re into nonstop over-the-top Michael Bay/Marvel action, you may be bored to tears. I appreciate slow burn plot and tasteful (not overdone) CGI.

Yep, there’s an entire plot line and set of characters that the Lynch 84 movie ignored, but they I felt added a deeper level of intrigue. I hope that Vilanueve plans to include that subplot.

Watched it last night… honestly should probably have been a TV show. Everything just seemed super rushed. Enjoyed myself though.

Edit: Some touches I really liked:

1. I really thought they did a great job with the voice. That could be cheesy as heck but they did a great job with how they made it.
2. I thought the language the Sardaukar spoke was super cool. kind of almost like a robotic sound to it.
3. Visually I think it's some of the best visual sci-fi we've seen. Absolutely stunning stuff with the dropships and thopters.
4. Has to be the best work Momoa has ever done right?
5. Costumes were really cool. Again, a ton of stuff could have been really cheesy. It felt very planned and thought out but not overly wrought if that makes sense. Stuff like Leto's armor when they land on Arrakis could have been just eye-roll bad in the wrong hands but it looks great.

I am very happy for the people that have not read the book that enjoyed it. I honestly don't know if I could have enjoyed it if I hadn't, because I think I would have been confused.

Anyone else notice the similarities between the scene with the Baron early on where he kinda looks down and rubs his bald head and the scene in Apocalypse Now where Kurtz is talking to Willard? At the time I was watching it seemed like the topic of the conversation was similar too but I can't remember exactly what was said. Definitely going to rewatch.

The Apocalypse Now scene:

Saw Dune finally last night and loved it. I have never read the books or seen the previous movie at all. Can't wait now for the next movie to come out.

Okay watched the new, then I immediately watched the old film. I forgot how rushed the original movie is. I think doing two parts is a good idea. Much more character development for Paul in the new version.

Also forgotjust how terrible the personal “shields” were in the original lol. Guess that was probably pretty coolback in the 80’s.

Original film does a better job with making the harkonnen’s just completely and openly vile.

Didnt like the new “look” for the sardakaurs but at least there was more of a complete line to understanding who they are in the new film.

Old Film: you almost have to read the books to get it properly

New film: no books needed but I might recommend watching the old version either before or after because they kind of complete each other.

Jason Mamoa really got invested in this roll. There are some behind the scenes looks with Mamoa that are worth a look. This one is my favorite:

"Don't see that in Iowa." No ****.
