I think the "super bowl" comments were relevant when we would get a win and otherwise have a lackluster season.

Also....note the number of fans from both sides that travel to the away game...it's a big game...a state rivalry....and power 5 non-con....both teams should get amped for the game.

It's a rivalry game. Of course it's a big one. Who doesn't want to win a rivalry game? Who doesn't think these games are important? Anyone that tries to tell you it doesn't matter is trolling. That being said, win or lose both teams will have a ton to play for after this week as well. So it can be both a big game and also not season-defining.

Heard today they're expecting 120,000 people in Ames for the game.

This super bowl talk is such bs.. both teams and fan bases want to win it… regardless of what happens Saturday, let all have fun and focus on the rest of our conference seasons after it’s over

I believe Rhodes and McCarney put heavy emphasis on this game.

McCarney absolutely. I would say he did it out of necessity.

When Mac took over it was already an uphill battle, but that was compounded by the fact that Iowa had blown way past ISU under Fry, and had a stranglehold on the state's fans, money, media, recruits, etc.

If Mac was going to turn this around, it was critical that he put an end to the long losing streak and bring some competitiveness back to the rivalry. When he won in 98 and 99 it was a nice it was a sign for our fans that this was headed in the right direction. Then 2000 was the breakthrough year.

In those early years it was also a nice feather in the cap when we were a long ways away from competing for B12 championships.

Rhoads did put emphasis on it (as he should have) but he would beat Iowa then proceed to go 3-6 in the conference. Helped us get to a bowl game, but that was it. That 2014 game was fun, but all it did in the end was help us go 2-10 instead of 1-11.

Campbell has figured out the conference success part of the equation, and that has allowed us to take a big step forward as a program to be true contenders. But MC is a competitor, and I have no doubt he wants to end that losing streak this year.

I don't know, after watching The Last Dance and how Jordan used any little thing to fuel him, I don't take any of that stuff for granted anymore. Obviously not everyone on the team is going to be wired that way, but I'm sure some are.
Jordan is a crazy person.

Honestly I have seen some weird super bowl, or this is "obviously the biggest game in ISU history" stuff this week... which is really weird considering we played in the Big 12 championship game and the Fiesta Bowl in 2 of our last 3 games, which are both clearly bigger games.

Bigger games to follow. Conference games are more important.
And the team will get better, this year and next.
