I love how people try to write a narrative about this game or us having slow starts. Nothing has any effect on the game but the players on the field for that year.

The idea that Campbell doesn't care or we don't try as hard is an insult to Campbell and at best a pathetic coping mechanism for fans.

This has never made a lick of sense to me and sounds like a very Hawkeye-ian excuse. What in the world does "doesn't put an emphasis on this game" even mean? Does he call the team together today and say "Listen fellas, I want us operating at a 6 this week. Some effort but let's not go all out."

You people act like there is some finite amount of "emphasis points" that can be allocated out across the year or something. Of course he wants to win this game, and I'd venture to say wants it just as bad as OU and Texas. And if he is in fact not emphasizing (whatever the heck that actually means...) a Top 10 non-conference matchup, that is a big issue.
I think previous ISU coaches have over-emphasized the game because they didn't see competing for a conference championship as a realistic possibility. Beating Iowa was a way to achieve respectability and a perceived parity with Iowa. For Campbell, I think it really is just another game on the schedule. BUT this year is different because a playoff berth is a realistic possibility and remains so only if we Beat the Hawks! I don't think there's any way Iowa should be ranked 10th in the country, but that's why they play the games.

I find that the most enjoyable Iowa fans generally are Iowa alums. Im not saying someone has to be an alum to cheer for any team. I have family that are Cyclone diehards and none went to ISU. But this week is awful. Im tired of the loud, obnoxious non-alum Tavernhok ***holes that just talk trash constantly at every chance they get. It doesnt stop after a week either. Most of the jokes are old, tired and unoriginal, like their AD and head coach.

It’s important for the state but I wouldnt miss it if it went away.
Same. Almost every single Iowa grad I know is pretty stand up. Might joke back and forth a little, but they get it.

Double edged sword Though. As much as tavern fans suck, we need many more of them to grow our product.

My SIL was a three year starter for ISU. When he went on his visit to iowa the the coaches had “Beat State” signs on their desks. Do not think the game is not important to them.

I don’t think CMC doesn’t care about UNI. I think he thinks we can play vanilla and beat them. He was right, there was a broken play they scored on and a few chances we didn’t execute on. But we won, like we should have. I also think we were shaking off some rust and that’s fine week one.

It's stupid.

It's also stupid for Iowa players to puff their chests out about being better than Oklahoma and Oregon. I really hope they all believe it, it's been two years since they beat ISU by an eyelash and ISU has defeated better/more talented teams since then.

They're nice things to be able to say, but they mean nothing about Saturday. I understand what we return but last year is gone and it has no bearing over the present. People just have recency bias and superstition. Statistically we are due for a win. I like that much at least.

We're due for a win, especially after the last two home games where we had our chances to put them away, but couldn't get it done.

It's crazy that this is only Purdy's second time facing Iowa.

I'm going, so I hope we at least show up. I can't take another year of losing to Iowa because we beat ourselves.

Wow. What a phenomenal "hot take" from this clown. How exactly is GameDay going to distract the team? Are our players pulling double duty in setting up/tearing down the GameDay set by chance? And if by "Super Bowl," he means the second non-conference game of the season before our more important conference slate, then I agree with him.

It's a stupid lazy take that both team's fans like to use. It's become an easy troll.

I suppose, but it has little relevance IMO. He's just trolling a little bit. By squawk standards its weak sauce.
I don't know, after watching The Last Dance and how Jordan used any little thing to fuel him, I don't take any of that stuff for granted anymore. Obviously not everyone on the team is going to be wired that way, but I'm sure some are.
