By firing Wells now, they are also getting a head start on other coaching candidates. There is some uncertainty now surrounding the Big 12 with the UT/OU defection, TV deal uncertainty, etc., so the conference is a harder sell. TT can get their sales pitch in a few ears now, ahead of the noise of the coaching change free-for-all at season's end.

Had a family member who was part of the Athletic Department at one of Wells’s previous schools and said the guy is a complete a-hole.

Lubbock is larger by far than every single city in Iowa...
True but its metro area is half the size of Des Moines, the Lubbock metro area is roughly the size of Cedar Rapids. 707,00 for Des Moines Metro, Lubbock 323,000 and CR at right around 272K.

Hindsight being 20/20 they should of kept Leach, but any man that has a full pirate manikin in his office, and the rest of the pirate gear is going to come off as an odd ball. I also get the feeling that Leach was not one that liked rubbing elbows and sucking up to wealthy oil people, he just wants to coach, and could care less if you like him or not.

That attitude rubs people the wrong way, and when you have wealth and can do something about it, it even worse.

Firing KK was a mistake. He had Baker Mayfield and Mahomes at the same time. The guy could spot and develop elite qbs.

KK also had a hollywood type feel that transcended Lubbock. he's unbeaten now with the sadsack cards.

Maryland had the worst fire though, getting rid of the Fridge the year he won 9 games and voted the ACC coach of the year. The AD wanted him to lose weight bc he thought a fat coach was a bad look for the school.
I think they even had clauses in his contract that gave him money if he lost weight.

Maryland hasnt been any good since.

I would still work but it would be something just to pad the stash and keep my mind working.

But I'd make it a requirement that any co-workers had to not be idiots (by my definition).

Actually, Ku firing Mangino was pretty bad given how that's turned out over time.

TxT sees what came of baseball and basketball there and sees no reason why football can't be the same. They made a huge error canning Mike Leach. Just as big of one with Kliff. Now Wells, who after all was but one game from a bowl, something they haven't seen since 2017. Matt was there less than 3-years and one of those was Covid infested.

How was firing Kliff a mistake? Should they have given him a decade to see if he could finally go 8-5? 6 years wasn’t enough?

Part of the issue is that TxT fans have a vision of their football program that's not consistent with reality, unlike most logical ISU and K-State fans. Even during Mike's tenure, TxT never won a conference championship.

BTW, Kliff was 8-5 his first year. He had an eye for QB talent and the ability to develop them. He would have won championships in Lubbock.

No he wouldn't. His defenses were trash.

They must know what they want to do. The only urgency to fire the guy in October was to do it before he potentially secured a winning record, which would look worse for Tech.

Kingsbury never had a winning conference record. Even in his best season at 8-5.

No he wouldn’t have. As others have said, he had 6 years there. Went to 3 bowls and never won more than 4 conference games. Does that say championship coach to you?

Having an undefeated NFL team says B12 championship to me. Kliff was young. He has charisma. He knows offense. He would have won in time. To suggest otherwise given his NFL record is preposterous borderline laughable.
