I think their silence is a pretty clear indicator that ATM is gone and of how deep they are in bed with Texas and that they don't want all the negative pub it will bring so they are kid gloving this thing for now.

Agreed. They didn't even have one blip about the NCAA's ruling on no high school game on team networks. It was all over the other web sites.

The whole point is this. Sure there is verbiage that says the TV deal is off if the conference disbands and that Fox/ESPN or whomever doesn't owe the conference or it's schools any money. Or if one team wants to leave they pay exit fees etc. But if we allowed a clause that says 6 schools can leave and force the disbanding of the conference, and the remaining 4 schools can not sue for projected lost income from previously signed contracts with said 6 schools we have some really stupid people negotiating for us.

The reason it hasn't worked in the past is that it wasn't an arms race about trying to get the biggest TV contracts etc. Todays college football world has changed tons since 94 when UT announced they were leaving the SWC. The BCS changed all of this and now it is one big money game and making sure you get paid.

Ok, but that assumes schools like ISU get any say whatsoever in the contracts. I seriously doubt that we do. The schools like UT, OU, Nebraska, A&M etc, are the main ones that influence and have negotiated power in these contract negotiations. I would seriously doubt that schools like us, Baylor and K-state (the ones that have the most to lose if the conference breaks up) have very little sway in most of the contracts.

Not if the B1G steals Rutgers, or if the SEC steals FSU, leading the ACC stealing WVU or USF. If SEC -> 14 or 16, all the puzzle will reshuffle among Big XII, ACC, and BE.

That would be our saving grace. Unless the Big East gets raided to the point, where it's not worth staying in. The key for us is to stay with KU and Mizzou. If we can do that, whether it's in the Big 12 or the Big East, we'll be ok.

If we somehow get detached from them, that basically means we're in the MAC..... Whether its called the Big East or not.

Doesn't matter how much power you have in negotiations. No entity would ever sign an agreement that would allow contract to be broken without any potential of ramifications. Doesn't mean that there is a dollar figure right now. All it means is that if contract is broken and a school feels it has lost significant income it has the right to seek damage reimbursement. Then it is up to the two entities to work out an agreement or take it to arbitration.

I review and sign contracts all the time, some with great power my way and some where i basically have zero power. And never once will you see a clause that states "if said entity or entities void contract for betterment of their own organization or organizations no legal action can be taken against them by other parties to recover lost benefits" or something similar. Which is basically what would be taking place if a majority of the schools bolted and voided the TV contracts and it's income.

Here's my conference realignment predictions from May 2, 2010:

Based on the information published in the papers, here's probably the best and most likely scenario:

1) The Big East stays as-is. Tagliabue and Notre Dame see to that. Everyone is "surprised" except those in the know. Check.

2) The Big 12 ceases to exist. Soon a check.

3) The Pac-10 Adds CU and BYU or Utah. Probably Utah. Maybe go for the 16 conference fit also, but probably not right now. Check and Soon to be a check.

  • I'm still not clear who those extra 4 teams will be, but looking like OU, OSU, TT and one more. ISU could fit here. Good crowds and Iowa population base already in AZ could be a factor as well as KU and KSU unwilling to separate assuming they're in the conversation.

4) The Big 10 Adds NU (check), OU, KU, MU and ISU (for existing IU rivalry and in-state politicking) OR OSU (old Big 8 connections).

  • Everyone on this board would talk me out of any B12 teams outside of OU and OSU going to Big 10. I was right on NU, but can see OU looking at West Coast for recruiting and easier schedule more likely. KU, MU and ISU are all better fits due to geography, AAU and culture than any Texas teams. Probably add one East Coast team to get to 16.

5) All the Texas schools that can make the cut go to SEC - TU, TTU, A&M and probably OSU due to close proximity. Only A&M and maybe MU here will be a check soon.

6) Baylor goes to MWC or goes independent. Maybe even Conference USA.

7) KSU goes probably to MWC, possibly MAC. MWC if they're smart. Big East is a long shot.

8) IF MWC plays this right, they add at least two schools (KSU & BU) that would be good fit to argue for BCS conference status, especially since one BCS conference ceases to exist. Baylor is tough call as it has a higher perception of its academics, but beggars can't be choosers.

All big $ "rivalries" will now exist as non-conference affairs: OU-TU, etc. Non-big earning rivalries either cease to exist or die a slow death over time.

If ACC, SEC and ACC all go 16 team, Big East as a FB conference dies, but stays as a BB conference. ND would be in a tough spot if things go that far, but just like the slow motion implosion of the Big 12, that's probably another year or two down the road, but you never know.

If you notice, I've completely left Texas off of the realignment predictions. Texas will do whatever is the most advantageous at the moment and immediately start looking for greener pastures like they always have. They deserve to be independent and if the Conferences are smart, they won't touch them with a twenty thousand foot pole. They are kryptonite to league stability like no other.

This is what has me worried the most. For some reason I think we can stay with KU, but don't feel very good about Misery.

There may or may not be a penalty, and of course we will have every right to sue if the conference is disbanded. Anyone can sue anyone in this country. It doesn't mean we would have any case.

If they disband the conference according to what is in the contract, I still have no idea how you plan to sue them for lost benefits. There will be no more benefits because there is no more conference.

I'm sure the TV contracts are subject to the conference being whole. If one or more teams leave, then the contract is void and has to be renegotiated or would have been accounted for in the original contract.

As far as I know, there is no legal precedent, where schools such as ISU are able to recover large sums of money outside of what would be in the penalty portion of the contract. Just because we made financial decision such as borrowing for renovations based on estimated future revenues, certainly doesn't mean squat to UT, A&M, etc or the courts for that matter.

My hopes:

Option 1: Big 12 remains and goes after big names even if unlikely to get them (Notre Dame, BYU, Louisville, Houston, etc...some combo to get to 12 teams again).

Option 2: If the conference crumbles, OU, OSU, TT and Texas goes to Pac 10, we PRAY that the SEC snags Missouri and ISU, KU, KSU gets invites from the Big East and makes a 12 team football league. Baylor left in the cold. Missouri already borders three SEC states so it makes sense somewhat.

I don't wanna go to the SEC. We would be the laughing stock for sure.

That's the whole point I was making. The option is there if the conference ceases to exist, not if a team or two leaves. But you could absolutely go after the schools that left to disband the conference for lost income from tv contract due to the nature of their exit. They all signed on and agreed to the TV contracts. If the conference ceases to exist there would be no renegotiating. The money would be gone, and a school could take the stance that they were to get paid for an example a minimum of 5 million a year over 13 years and the actions of the 6 or so schools that left voided the contract. Then they would be liable for lost income for the other schools. No where did I ever say that it would be a slam dunk case, just stating I think there would be lawsuits if teams disband conferences and void TV contracts. The benefits of the conference would be gone so there would be no exit penalties as set up by the conference but there still would be potential lost income from the TV contract.

I think KU is the key. Mizzou has an outside chance of big riches in the B1G or the SEC where we never will have a chance to be included. However, we need to stick with KU because if all hell breaks loose their basketball ensures that they are either going to the Pac-16 or the Big East. We want to be on the same train in that event.

I agree with option 2, but in that scenario it doesn't neccesarily need to be Missouri who the SEC needs to take. If they took an existing ACC school then I'd assume the acc would take a big east school, thus opening up another spot for all four of KU/KSU/Mizz/ISU. I think that's the key here is the pac 12 expanding is good for isu, but if Oklahoma goes to the sec and texas goes independent this is the worse case scenario. Cause in this scenario I do believe the pac 12 will expand for oky state or ttech. So now you got mizz/ku/ksu/isu/okyst/ttech all lobying for 3 big east spots. Or maybe those 6 teams(plus baylor) invite one school and reform the big 8 conference.

Also if everything I said above is true and Oklahoma goes to SEC with atm and texas goes independent I really think possibly adding teams to the remaining 7 may make more sense then going to the big east. Say you did this

old big 8 type divison
ISU
kansas
mizz
K-state
colorado state
air force

old swc type division
texas tech
baylor
oky state
houston
boise state
smu

This would be just as good as a football conference as the big east

compared to say big east divison like this

east
uconn
pitt
s.florida
rutgers
syracuse
w.virginia

west
isu
mizz
ku
tcu
louisville
cincinnati

I think ISU should start their own League...here's my lineup:

ISU
USC
Texas
OK
NotreDame
Florida
LSU
Ohio State

Now I know it's only an 8 team league but that gives us room to have a manageable non-con schedule. Thoughts?

And if you need jimlad you need to get a life.

Oklahoma will not join the SEC under this administration, they have turned the SEC down twice in two years

Guys, snap into reality. ND will never, I repeat never join the big 12. If anything they would join the big 10, but that will probably never happen either. Wow, folks need to relax.

Neither will Arkansas. No BCS school will make a move into this ******* mess.

I agree but if these conferences go to 14 or 16 there is no way in hell the Big East does not follow. It is obvious to me, in the end, that the schools most likely to be left out from the supposedb big 4 are ISU KSU and Baylor. They can head to the Big East and still be in a BCS league. As long as the government is still in place these conferences can be 16 teams but will not overthrow the NCAA like some think. If they try they risk losing the non profit tag.
