Basically... Aggregation (clumping of snow) can't take place because the winds are so strong, they rip apart the snowflake aloft.

This too...NWS was talking in their discussion as well that the area of max lift extended through and above the dendritic layer where the fluffy stuff is made, so there is some of both going on.

It is amazingly windy here in chicago. The playing surface of the outdoor tennis court near my building has been ripped up by the wind. So far not too much snow but expecting a lot.

Update on snowfall totals for Des Moines officially:

3.2" in the past 6 hours
5.0" for entire event, as of 6PM

I'm thinking the 7.0" storm total is looking pretty close right now....(wipes brow nervously).

Seems like more than that just south of the airport in Norwalk. Although I haven't walked outside today and don't feel like doing so.

Very well could be. You can see very high variations in snow totals over a very small area.

Plus, I believe the AM snow around 5AM hung around that area just south of DSM for a while before eventually lifting quickly through Des Moines, so that could be a factor as well.

Looks like CR here is still looking at a foot of snow. Do the GURUs agree?

I'm in Marion and its been pretty underwhelming so far ... there's maybe 3" total so far unless I'm a completely bad judge of snowfall. Obviously its windy as **** so I'm sure it sucks in the country - but I'm not sure we're gonna get the foot predicted.

Still plenty of time for it to snow. Looks like most of the heavy bands have been just to our east and south. I too figure about 3-4 so far, but Solon is close to 8 and North Liberty is 7-8

The dry air is just to much it is even getting less in southeast iowa now too, snow will become light soon. Chicago will not see as much as predicted as well, but windy as hell though!!

I would say we have about 5 inches in our backyard, and it is snowing like crazy out right now.

channel 2 just interrupted NCIS for a weather update. They said we've gotten 5", and are still predicting almost 15 in CR. I don't believe that. I think we'll end up with 8-10, which will be enough.

Also, I noticed on 511ia.org that all of the east-west roads south of I-80 are closed (or impassable) in eastern Iowa. That part of the state is getting pounded, as predicted.

Yeah, I just saw that on Channel 2. There is a very heavy band that is settled over CR right now and is situated in a manner which makes it look like it could last for quite a while.

Channel 9 said there could be another heavy snow maker coming next week. Anyone care to comment on that one?

They have no clue yet what it will be or where it will go. Here's what the NWS discussion from Davenport said today:
Quick look into early next week...many phasing issues to be resolve between digging northern stream upper trough and the southern stream... but the European model (ecmwf) is trending more to being phased enough to induce another potential snow storm in or near the dvn County Warning Area next Tuesday and Tuesday night. Re-enforcing Arctic surge behind whatever occurs as 1040+ mb Canadian high pressure looms across the northwest High Plains. ..12..

I'd give it a 6/10 on a coolness scale.

Things that would of helped it raise:

More cars in the ditch
Surprise storm that everyone underestimates
A lot more snow
No ice under the snow
High probability of loss of electricity
Woman and small men tearing up in fear
Governor declares disaster area and calls in the national guards who arrive on snowmobiles
