Why carry the stun gun, mace, and pokey things? I gauruntee she’s could be snuck up on and put in a hold before she even thought to grab these.

Piece of mind for her mom. But mainly she could use them in a date type situation not in a stranger type situation. My point was that stuff provides piece of mind but if a stranger sides up on you they are most likely useless.

Oh, I'm not saying boyfriend or even family. I'm saying something stuck out to someone suspicious pretty early.

I love my parents and girlfriend dearly and that those feelings are reciprocated. However, if I went 24 hours without saying anything to them without warning, I don't think they would report it unless there was another sign of something suspicious.
Young and attractive females are much more at risk than old fat guys.

Yes, if there is a laptop/tablet that is also signed in to Google, which there likely is given her age and college student, they can get real-time and timestamped history immediately via the google maps location history - https://www.google.com/maps/timeline.

Even if phone is off it would show location until off, or "frequent routes", etc.

I just hope this part doesn't get delayed unnecessarily by rural sheriff's office to DCI transition. Hopefully the local police/sheriffs know know this stuff - I would assume it is their basic playbook - but maybe don't given smaller likely older staff, etc. I emailed the county sheriff "tip line" about it "just in case" - I've never done something like that before - but even before the subpoena it's amazing the trail we leave of ourselves if we know where to look.

That's great you shared that info....because even as a pretty "tech savy" person, I am in awe sometimes at what my phone/google tells me about me. lol

But, yes, in theory pinpointing last location on a phone/device is getting much more precise based on where it pinged, routers it interacted with, Geo data, etc. I have spoke to some law enforcement I know and some are getting into this digital stuff, but many old timers are not quite there yet (using only "they were last physically seen" vs their digital footprint.

Human trafficking is way bigger problem than people understand. Iowa is a major corridor due to the ease of travel - putting ground between you and the authorities quickly and easily. My daughter just graduated in CJ and put me together on this, I was shocked.

As far as self-defense, guns, mace, tasers, et al:
#1 is AWARENESS. Keep your head up, walk confidently, and don't go into the proverbial dark alleys in the first place! Do this and the odds you get in trouble are vanishingly remote.
#2 is physical self-defense, any kind of martial arts at all. Just knowing how to hit someone in the eyes, throat, etc is a big deal, and training to do it so you are able to react and not freeze. And it will help you with #3.
#3 is a weapon. Whatever you prefer, or whatever is handy (keys are great in a pinch). Concerned you won't be able to unholster it or it will be used against you? See #2 above - pop the guy in the eyes, buy some time and space, then use your weapon.

I would STRONGLY encourage you all to have your kids take a class in martial arts or self defense. Boys and girls both, and take yourself along while you're at it. Odds are they will never need it, but it's good exercise anyway, they are usually fun, and it builds real self-confidence like you won't believe. And when you walk around looking confident, you are much less likely to be targeted. Until we live in a perfect world, train your kids to fight back!

Also, make noise, make a commotion, draw attention to the situation even if no one is around. Carry a loud whistle alarm with you. Some more ideas:https://www.sheknows.com/health-and-wellness/articles/1127415/self-defense-tools

I always wonder what 100’s of tips mean in cases like this. What could those possibly be when the last report is of her running or sending a Snapchat.

Most of them will be someone seeing somebody that looks vaguely like the missing person or someone seeing a man that is acting 'strange.'

It’s probably a bunch of stuff like on this thread with people who watch dateline and their tip is it could be the boyfriend. Or telling them to call her cellphone.

Jevon MIller is from Brooklyn if I'm not mistaken. Living out of state I have been keeping up with the story. Sad to hear. I have two younger sisters in Iowa who I worry about.

People saying lots of cop cars on or around highway 21. FBI as well. Like others said, hog confinement on property.
