I'm going on my 2nd this year, loved it last year!

Here's my question*—*Chris Williams, now that you're in Bondurant, are you planning to set up a Cyclone Fanatic beer tent for us as we roll through? Or at least a vendor stand with some good freebies to promote the good guys before we have to roll through Coralville??? Hook a brother up.

I'm in with some people from Colorado and one from Hollywood. This will be the first RAGBRAI for all of us. Who else is doing the ride? Any tips on surviving? (I have done a bike tour in Colorado so I know what to pack, etc.)

Three pieces of advice:

1. Butt butter.
2. Make a laminated route map that affixes to your handlebar. They gave away some last year on Saturday night.
3. Make notes about cool buses and team names. You will be amazed at how hard they are to remember later.

How many of you saying your riding are actually officially registered? Just wondering about how many ae bandit riders since registration is closed. I assume the only big diff is if you are riding bandit for a day leg and breakdown you are on your own.

Anyone know about getting those first come first served day passes sold each day on the ride?

Not offended nor touchy today. Just confused by your problem with those that hammer. You cleared it up in your following posts. I'm not sure how much fun riding straight through would be either, but I don't have a problem with someone doing it if that is what floats their boat. We tend to ride toward the back of the pack so the roads are a little clearer. That way we don't have to contend with nearly as much traffic and a we have to pass (and are passed by) fewer riders.

Perhaps we will see each other on the ride and can have a beer together.
Yeah no problem. Didn't mean to sound like too much of a jerk, unlike someone else. But love too offer you a beer. We are having a house party in carroll along with bbq. Love having routes that go through areas where you have a good number friends living at.

We only registered once in 4 years. Otherwise we are completely self contained and always have a place to stay. Probably not the right thing to do but it does get pricey. How many do they allow to register early?

I'm registered for the whole week. But due to child care issues I'll probably give up a day or two so Mrs. Velo can ride a little. She isn't registered due to the uncertainty of it. Our team is generally 90-95% registered.

We register because of the security of it as well as doing our part to pay for the services, especially the patrols at the intersections. The sag wagons, not so much. I've never used one. None of that comes free. I'd rather not pay for the troopers who harrass us to get out of towns. Just let us know that they are pulling the support on the route and let us be. We are prepared to ride without support just as we do the other 51 weeks of the year. If we ride after dark we ride together and well lit. [pun (mostly) unintended]

I don't get bent out of shape with those who choose not to register, though. How can you get mad when they sell out of wrist bands every year? If they artificially limit the number of registration slots, people who want to go are going to go anyway, wrist band or not.

Our team is 100% registered... unless we pick up someone late who wants to tag along. A lot of people put in a lot of work to make this thing happen and we may as well pay our part to keep it going. I'm sure if there was ever a time when we weren't selected in the lottery we'd probably ride anyway.

First you have to win the lottery.

I may consider it depending on how I feel after finishing this Saturday.

I'm pretty good friends with the Executive Director of TE. I'm also on the board of the TE race team. I'll find some way to get in.

Why the need for route sheets? Can't you just follow the other 10,000 people?

What's a really good waterproof, small, and easy to set up tent for under $100? I won't use this for much, other than this and occasionally the portaging through Canada. I'm willing to spend what it takes to get these three things, but I would prefer to spend less. I'm 6'3' and 270, so I need a lot of room in a small tent, and I'll be alone during these trips.

Also, what would you recommend for a sleeping mat? The mats I've seen wouldn't be any better than a sleeping bag.

I really wasn't trying to be a jerk. Sorry to have offended as well. I was just reacting on behalf of a friend on a busy day. I've seen your team every year and am sure we will cross paths again. Cyclones don't shake hands, Cyclones gotta hug!!! (Tommy Boy reference, not suggesting anything.)

Its about double your price ranges but we have a REI Half Dome and its been a great tents. It buttons down pretty well in the rain. REI also has an awesome return policy and they stand behind everything they sell. I think they also make it an extended version which might be good for you.

Okay, here is a RAGBRAI/tent story. One of our team buys a new tent. He got it at his local hardware store. Got a GREAT deal on it. We get to the start town, Sioux City, and he opens his new tent. It was like 3ftX3ft. I don't know if it was for a really little kid or if it was a display model or something? There was nothing on the packaging to make you think it wasn't a real tent. we laughed our a$$es off. he slept in it for the week, well his head and chest did, his legs stuck out.
