Not going to lie. This is my first RAGBRAI and I'm only doing the first four days. I was completely unaware I even had to register when I decided to do it and only found out about registration later on.

Does this mean I'm going to encounter a lot of disapproving looks and be hassled by event coordinators?

What's a really good waterproof, small, and easy to set up tent for under $100? I won't use this for much, other than this and occasionally the portaging through Canada. I'm willing to spend what it takes to get these three things, but I would prefer to spend less. I'm 6'3' and 270, so I need a lot of room in a small tent, and I'll be alone during these trips.

Also, what would you recommend for a sleeping mat? The mats I've seen wouldn't be any better than a sleeping bag.

Not under $100 but I use a Marmot Limelight 3 tent. I've been really happy with it. Comes with a ground tarp which is nice.
For a mat I use a Thermarest xl. Once you get to camp and set up your tent, it will basically self inflate 75% of the way just unrolled with the valves open.

I've gotten a lot of my stuff at REI and Scheels, but Backcountry.com: The North Face, Mountain Hardwear and Arc'teryx Skiing, Camping, Hiking and Backpacking Gear is a good website, and they have a type of woot site Steep and Cheap: Rab Quantum Endurance 400 Sleeping Bag: 25 Degree Down - $139.99 - 65% off that has tents, pads, etc.

Not likely.......I was only official on my first ride in 84, had DMRAG carry my DUFFEL BAG in the semi, what a nightmare trying to find your BAG in the huge pile. LATER THREE RIDES WERE AS UNREGISTERED RIDERS, had friends hauling luggage in support vehicle, much better way to travel. Last two rides were staying homes lined up with banker friends in the towns and cities we overnighted in along with spport vehicle luggage hauling. Better yet.

No one should give you crap about being an unregisted rider...If 10,000 riders are official, additional 7-8,000 are unofficially on the ride as well.

Sold my tricked out Raleigh Olympian road bike this early summer to an ISU student. Think he was going on RAGBRAI. Dirt cheap price for a well kept road racer... Had spedometer, jelly seat, front and rear bags with spring rack in back along with bike shoes, just his size too..

Don't need to prove I can do it anymore.
