Willie Fritz currently the HC at Georgia Southern. Previous to this year was the HC at Sam Houston State. Before that was the HC at Central Missouri State. He been very successful at each stop. He has experience recruiting TX, GA. FL and the Midwest. If not him the Stitt from Colorado School of Mines.

Its easy to look around at successful mid-major or high major coaches and assume they would be good fits for ISU. IMO equally important as X's and O's, is their ability to assemble a strong staff and one with great recruiting connections in the upper midwest, Texas and Florida or California.

A guy like Doc Holiday has had great success, but he and his staff have strong ties to the southeast. The guy at CSU has done a tremendous job, but his staff has strong connections in the west and California. Same as Wells at USU. I would think strong midwest/Texas ties will be critical. A guy like Fuente at Memphis may be a better fit based on the staff he could bring.

What about Gary Barnett? He was showing interest in the Kansas job... Why not us?

I believe Rhoads get another year to see what he can do with the recruits the new staff brought in. But pressure will be on Wally to finally retire to that lake cabin in Florida.
A few have mentioned the guy at Utah State but I kinda like the guy at Utah.

No, Rhoads needs to go. The existing players he has recruited aren't cutting it and there isn't anyone of the 2015 class to get excited about. Take a look and be honest - any game changers in the group. I don't even look at stars, he'll half these kids didn't even have 2 stars when the Clones offered. The ISU program is in deep, fundamental issues and personnel problems.

Its time for a total reboot. There are so many great coordinators out there, many have been mentioned on here already - Chad Morris (Clemson), Jeremy Pruitt (Georgia), etc. Love the Ed Orgeron idea...best recruiter in the country and will hire coordinators smarter than him. My personal favorites would be PJ Fleck at Western Michigan (inherited 1-11 program...total overhaul and now they are 6-3 in his second year). Also like Rod Carey Northern Illinois.

Willie Fritz - this is his 1st year as HC at Georgia Southern. Prior to that he was HC at Sam Houston State for 4-5 years. Prior to that he was HC at Central Missouri State. Has had very successful programs at all three schools. He meets all of your recruiting connections - FL, TX and upper Midwest.

Don't they run a triple option? No thanks

Georgia Southern doesn't run the triple option anymore. Jeff Monken left to become the HC at Army at the end of last year. Willie Fritz kept his offense he ran a Sam Houston State.

The thing is, with the NDSU coaches, we are getting coaches who know what it's like to recruit but not get upper level talent. They can continue to recruit the same talent they do at their small programs, but just keep developing the players the way they did before they came here. Eventually, more talent would come in.

For the record, this same thing was said when we hired McDermott in basketball.

Is there anyone on the Mizzou staff that would be an option? Pinkel got them turned around by recruiting Texas hard.

Upon further reading Georgia Southern still runs the triple option. Here is a post game quote from a game in October
At every stop, there is one statistic that has always interested Fritz more than most. One stat that defines his coaching philosophy. One stat that explains how — and why — his Eagles racked up 613 rushing yards Saturday in their win against Georgia State.
"In over 22 years as a head coach, we've won over 91% of our games when we had one more yard rushing (than our opponent)," Fritz, 54, told USA TODAY Sports. "We set our offense up to be able to run the ball effectively, and our defense to stop people from running the ball."

Call Harbaugh. Doubt it would happen but maybe he'd be drunk or something when he gets the call and take it. Other than that...

Jim Leavitt
Phil Bennett
Craig Bohl
Gary Barnett
Doug Meacham
Jeff Casteel (Because I like the 3-3-5 defense)
Doc Holiday
Ed Warinner
Pat Narduzzi

In all reality though, I'd like a guy who is excellent at developing either the o-line or d-line.

Nothing Wrong with the Triple Option

I don't care what type of offense we run as long as it wins games. The triple option can be a thing of beauty. Denzel Washington won a STATE title running the option in Remember the Titans.

It also worked pretty well for OU and Nebraska back in the day. G Tech, Navy and Air Force have been pretty succesful over the last decade running the option. I can actually see the spread offense evolving to be a run/pass offense. The diamond formation is gaining popularity and OU ran the triple option out of it against ISU.

Agree. We need an NFL OL/DL/LB coach who's been an HC/OC/DC...not saying it has to be Leavitt but that's the sort of background I'd like to see.
