Smokey flavor belongs in a rauchbier.
Just like sour belongs in a flanders red.

Worst beer I've had in a LONG time was Madhouse's Iowa IPA. That is just a god awful beer, which is pretty disappointing. Their regular Pale Ale isn't very good either, but the IPA borders on undrinkable (I've never had an undrinkable beer before...so that's saying something).

Wild Blue is pretty bad too.
I'd also toss out Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat for consideration.

I haven't had any of the stuff from Gleuk, but I hear it's pretty awful too.
Totally agree on the Madhoue IPA, first beer I can ever remember not finishing. Never will see me by a six pack from Madhouse again.

Anything that doesn't have Busch in the name :jimlad:

On a serious note...I had a Hub City Brown Ale the other day that I couldn't even choke down.

I haven't tried the Madhouse IPA, but I don't like the wheat at all. Never had too much of a problem with the regular Pale (not great, but not the worst beer I've ever had), and I actually had it on tap once.

Not sure why, but it wasn't even recognizable on tap. In a good way. It tasted like a normal Pale, with a hop character that bordered on an IPA. Maybe they weren't serving me Madhouse, but whatever it was was delicious.

I've only ever had the pale in a bottle, and then on tap at a Buc's game once. It wasn't very good either time. A notch below Boulevard's pale ale (which I'm also not a huge fan of). It could be that 10% IPAs have destroyed my palate, but I'm just not feeling it.

I had some expectations for the IPA, but it was literally one of the worst beers I've ever tried. It had a bit of a wet/moldy hop character that was evident, but no discernible hop flavor at all. There was no body to it. Just an awful beer. I gagged after every swallow (I couldn't bring myself to sip it, as that would just prolong the drinking experience).

Best beer I've had from them is the coffee stout, which is pretty pedestrian, but not awful.

Way more style than substance with those guys. I hate it because I want them to succeed, but they make bad beer and then market the hell out of it. They are like the Anheiuser Busch of the Iowa beer scene without the scale.

Busch Heavy! Sure, maybe Hamms and the Beast taste worse, but at least they have style and personality. The only time anyone buys Busch Heavy is purely by accident. Every single time I've ever seen someone drinking it, they bought it thinking it was Busch Light (which I actually thought was a good beer when I was in high school).

Sam Adams Triple Bock. I had a sip and then went to throw up. Maple ******* syrup beer.

There's allegedly one good year of it (97 I think?). The rest of it has been pretty universally panned. I've only had a it a couple of times, and it wasn't exactly good.

An extreme beer a bit ahead of it's time.

Completely agree about smoky beers.

New Glarus Smoked Rye Ale was disgusting. I don't like my beer to taste like ham + campfire. In fact, I don't like anything to taste like ham.

Also, I can't stomach the beast.
