I have not been paying attention to what is going on for the 2022 roster: https://cyclones.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/2022

Who is staying with the Covid Extention, who is definitely gone? What recruits are we adding? Like I said I have really drifted off to giving little attention to what is going on even after decent post-season possibilities last season (which were short-lived).

Any Spring Volleyball news?

Not quite as good as the freshman class at Nebraska right now. If I remember correctly, they got the #1 overall recruit who is a setter, the #2 and #3 overall recruits who are both OHs, and the #1 Libero. Then the #8 OH or something. If that class doesn't win a national title it will be a disappointment.
They reeled in the two best OH prospects last year. Seems excessive

Here is the ISU press release and CJL interviews on the five 2022 VB signees. Would be interesting to know how schollies are being allocated amongst these five and I am assuming there will be attrition amongst existing underclassmen as well as some immediately eligible transfers signed on later.

my daughter played in Omaha last weekend and I got to watch Wachholz. Fun to watch and tons of upside.

Looks like Fonoti has moved on, not sure where to to why. Sometimes fresh blood can help. Fiona definitely seemed like a player favorite and I will miss having her on the bench.

Wasn't the expectation for Fiona to come in and help the setters? Up until last season the setters never seemed able to break through. And last year it just seemed like we made the upgrade through the transfer portal rather than through coaching.

Given recent results, there needed to be staff changes.

Like CJL, she was a setter in college. The new guy seems to be more of a defensive specialist. Maybe our AA/NCAA champ setter head coach will take more direct coaching of the setters.

New guy also has good AAU ties in the state. Maybe we can get a few good ones to stay in state or just choose Cardinal over black or purple.

AAU level talent is pretty sparse in my experience. If Iowa Club teams go to Florida they do very well. The competition is noticeably lower there and in JVA than USAVB. That said I hope he can bring in something because we need a shot in the arm in recruiting. Jen Malcom is great but can't do it all.

So Neef has never played volleyball?
His LinkedIn profile indicates he played 2 years of Varsity Basketball at Cornell and was a student assistant for VB for 4 years. No evidence of him playing collegiate VB.

The program has been in decline with the gap widening between ISU and UT/BU. Staff changes needed to be made. We shall see if Neef can help stimulate recruiting and the on court product. Also noticed that the Technical Assistant hired last year is no longer listed on the official VB site so I am assuming that he will be replaced as well.

The Peterson twins have made a decision on where they will play college VB. Payton to Louisville and Jadyn will play for Mom at UNI. Payton is the top shelf prospect with her other finalists being Creighton and KSU.

And ICYMI amongst the CyTown news, the ISU Tennis Practice Facility will be repurposed for VB while the Tennis program will be moving to an expanded Ames Racquet Club that will include practice facilities and an indoor competition venue.

Hopefully, the repurposed VB facility will help stimulate needed improvement in recruiting, development and conditioning.
