X's and O's...let's try for example our gameplan against Augustin of Texas this year...our gameplan to beat Missouri's press which was causing to's at a rapid pace...our gameplan vs Kansas last year...the last minute and a half of the game at Missouri last year was some of the best in game coaching I've ever seen...just a few gameplans and a couple x's and o's that Greg has done...you just obviously can't come to grasp the fact the talent on a team, is the most important factor in success...a horrible coach will win more with a great team, than a great coach will win with a horrible team, but you clearly don't realize that...Offenses look a lot better when the shots drop, or when a team has a guy that can get to the rim and finish. But right now our best penetrator is Garrett (who is a year of weights away from finishing on a consistant basis), and our best shooter (Lucca) is in street clothes. Tougher to execute when you don't have the guys to do it, but evidently you just can't grasp that.
Thanks for trying to come up with some concrete examples for me:
Texas this year - I watched this game (I actually see quite a few UT games on TV). I'm not so certain that DJ's game (17pts, 1reb, 3asst, 1to, and 2stls) was impacted that dramatically by anything we were doing. He had a decent game and actually was in a little bit of a "slump" during that stretch. However, WE LOST THE GAME.
Missouri this year -I didn't see this game but at least we won the game by 5 at home...that is good. However, one thing I know, Anderson, who is a disciple of Nolan Richardson, loves to press and try to create easy baskets in transition and basically outscore the other team in a fast-paced game. This is much easier to do at home than on the road. If we can control the pace when we play them in Columbia I will be much more impressed. By the way...Mizzou is no "world beater" team...15-14 and in 10th place in the Big 12.
Kansas last year -I assume you are talking about the loss in OT at home. I did see that game on TV...but I just don't recall much of it...certainly nothing that made me think McDermott was a sterling X&O guy. The bottom line again is that WE LOST THE GAME.
I guess when I think of a good X&O coach I think of the following:
-A guy that can "out-coach" a team with superior talent and get a win that maybe he really shouldn't get.
-A guy that can develop a defensive scheme that will take the other team's best player out of the game and force someone else to beat you.
-A guy that has a team that can consistently score easy buckets from and inbounds situation under the offensive goal.
-A guy that has a team that can consistently score easy buckets when coming out of a timeout with the ball.
-A guy that has an offensive gameplan that yields easy buckets off the halfcourt set.
-A guy who can make in game adjustments to stop the flow of the other team. Self gave a great example of this against us last week...we came out hot in the second half and trimmed the lead to 6 (if I recall correctly) and he called timeout. A few minutes later we were down by 20+.
I clearly understand that talent is critically important...that's why I am a little concerned with recruits coming from small towns in Nebraska.
